How to restart a marine fish tank?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I need advise here.

Recently I started a new tank that runs well for 1 month with fishes swimming happily. Howvever 1 week ago I brought a anemone and the next day the anemone was sucked under my pump and polluted my tank! All the inhabitants die soon after. Please advise how can I restart the tank ? draining off the water completely and filling with fresh per-mix salt water can ?

Hello Tuna,

I have another question.

My other tank has completed the nitrogen cycle?

I tested my tank and has detected zero reading for ammonia and nitrites but after I introduce a few fishes into the tank and on the 2nd day my test for nitrites went from light blue to purple (2.0 ppm).! I used API test kits ! but ammonia was clear! the fishes are still alive but why? Do I have to try to get the nitrites down to "0" light blue and alway keep it "0"?

Regards

Ronnie

Anemone is not recommanded for a new tank, since it is not easy to keep. I would suggest for a major water change with salt mix ( Mix the water at least for 24 hour) or Sea water. You could also use carbon or poly filter to remove the tonix from the water.

Appreciate your advise! I already did that ! Thanks !

Btw do have similar experience here. My other 4ft tank which has completed the cycling. zero ammonia, zero nitrites and nitrates! during the cycling I noted a spike in ammonia and nitrites.

your 4ft tank should have been cycle successfully since you have notice the spike in the ammonia then the fall. For your second tank, i advice you double confirm the nitrite reading with another test kit ?? You can check out Salifest test kit .

  • 6 months later...

My tank has been revived and now into the 6th month. Patience really paid off. I almost wanted to give up this hobby.

This is the first time i am posting my tank picture here.
