Activated carbon should make your water crystal clear what.. how long have you not changed or washed your filter's sponge? :P

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?

u guys use uv sterilizers wan ah? are those easy to use? how does it work?

yes.. but a good one cost more than $100+.. usually $150 and above...

Then again can't turn on too long... could be bad for our skin too if we stand too near to it.. ;)

Hi !

I used Seachem activated carbon for my main 4ft tank and chemi-pure on my hospital 2ft tank....both waters are crystal clear.

Note : You should change your activated carbon at least once in every one to two months, depending on its supplier recommendation.

Plus...did you clean your biofilter and mechnical filter periodically ? If yes, could be your filtering flow rate (minimum 6~7x of water capacity for marine tank )is insufficient ?

Regards, Golf

The water is not clear due to floating algae and organics. UV if properly setup kills free floating algae. When I was using it, can see a change in water clarify within 24hrs. As for ozone, it is use to sterilize the water. A ozone generator is not that ex but the controller to control it is. If to much ozone is use, can kill alot more then just algae and pathogen. Activated carbon is a form of chemical filtration as it absorb the organic material give you clear water.

I got one china brand ozone that controls by percentage.. starts from 10% and increments every 10% all the way.. still I dun like the smell.. :(

can't use it in an enclosed room.. must open window big big and lots of wind sia.. :(

which brand UV are you using? How much huh?

Thank tfrancis for clearing the air & i guess it was a mix up with other brand of products..

this is quite true.... but have to consider that uv sterilizers does not exempt anything, so chances of killing the beneficial bacterias/micro organisms is also high.....

That is why placement is so important. It has to be place last in the loop. So if sump is used, must be placed at the return part either through the return pump or another pump there to the tank. This will ensure that the bact in the sump are not disturb. Flowrate is also very important as too fast and it is useless. Wattage will determine the killing power.

As for brands, not important ( just make sure they dont leak) cos even most china brands give Philips UV tube. Just must make sure the wattage is enough and DONT LEAK and the sleeve must be quartz.

Flow rate should be set to 10-20gallon per hr per watt. So a 11watt UV should use a pump between 400-800lt/hr. any faster and the contact time would not be enough.

But the con of the UV is it does not discriminate between what it kills. So proper location can minimise it but not eliminate this. But the main bulk of your beneficial bacteria live in the live rock and you filter so this should not affect much.
