SRC Member LittleBurger Posted November 25, 2011 SRC Member Share Posted November 25, 2011 I need some opinions on the selection of pump model of reef oct. Tank size is 3x3x2. The 2 models in consideration are 3000 & 5000 series. I am planning to have 2 return pumps, A & B. Currently, my choice is 2 same pump model. Return pump A will tee to 2 H2Ocean FR. Return pump B will tee to Teco TR15 & FR educator. I have calculated the head loss for both pumps. It seem 3000 is too weak(my personal opinion) and 5000 is too strong. 3000 flow rate after head loss is 341.16gph. 5000 flow rate after head loss is 620.79gph. Which pump is more suitable? Thanks!!! resser
This is my opinion only. Ideally, you want to match flowrate in your sump to your skimmer's pump. There is also a balance with the pump that feeds your media reactor. Water that doesn't get 'cleaned' and goes back to your display may not be good for SPS, but LPS/ NPS prefers it. If you are keeping SPS, there is always the need for more flow/ wave in your display. More better than less, and the only downside is perhaps the heat that needs to be cooled and electricity bills from chiller kicking in often. Too much doesn't matter, too little is bad. Some say no less than 4 times circulation of all your water (including sump) per hour, some say 10 or more is fine, it really depends on your skimmer/ nutrient level and your livestock. Each tank is different, success is in achieving a balance, it is the quest for this balance that discourages some and addictive to others. Quote Materialism :- He who dies with the most toys, wins. SRC Member LittleBurger Posted November 30, 2011 Author SRC Member Share Posted November 30, 2011 Another question on the fresh water for mixing salt. I calculated that my tank plus sump tank is abt 680litres. I am planning to buy O2 distilled water 1500mlx12 per carton. I calculated I will need abt 38cartons....... Is my calculation right? Can't imagine 38 cartons sitting in my living room, all the empty bottles.... Planning to keep SPS, LPS. So am wondering for pple with <1xx gallons tank with SPS, do u change water with salt mixed or NSW? All along I've been going CF & buy about 4packs of water per trip plus at the same time looksee the LS. Anyone care to advice? Thks. Normally I bring whole family go to CF jalan jalan & also an educational trip for my daughter. So once I buy them, when I reach home, I will immediately do water change. So I need to aerate them b4 changing? Yr tank even larger than mine.... guess PUB will charge u for "water conservation" fee deep deep. Yr salt probably will be 2 pails of 20+kg. If like tat, need to call CF to check out if they do delivery riao.... Thanks bro. Quote Tank size:36"x36"x24" Return pump" 2x Reef Octo 5000 Skimmer:BK Double Cone 200 on Reef Octopus DC 5500s. kira76
What I did for my tank was to use NSW for the first time and then use salt mix for water change. I find this easier as I get the distilled water delivery to my house. I usually ordered about 6 bottles of 19l distilled water.
