keeping sharks

hello bros i recently saw a baby marble shark on sale, i am very tempted to get one to be kept as my pet but the problem is i really dunno what kind of sand substrate to put in the tank beacause previously when i kept a bamboo shark i used fine coral chip sand and the shark died within two weeks and seems like it had abrasions around its belly and underside which caused infections.currently i will be housing them in a 5ft tank since they are babies once they overgrow i will shifting then to a FGT at 8ft

coral chips are sharp. use grade 1 or 0.

and they are very sensitive to water parameters. i dun think 5' is enough. best if u can get a tank that is wide

hmmm grade 0 the 5ft tank is for temporary purposes as the shark is coming in as a baby once the fella grows to 1feet or 1.5 gonna shift him to the 8ft fgt

Seriously i think shark keeping will required a very big tank as this fellow will very soon out grow the tank.

they might out grow my 5ft tank but i dont think they will outgrow my 8ft FGT bcoz in captivity i dunt think they will reach to a size of 8ft further more species like bamboo shark so i guess it will not be a problem

Size 0 or 1 should be okay, it should be sandy not rocky. My current bare bottom tank host a baby carpet shark about 10" long. Caught it during a fishing trip in Malaysia.

Black tip?? does anyone keep them? can they not grow more than 5 feet long

I guess the reason why less people keep sharks like the black tip (even small ones) is because they need a a lot of swimming space. Definitely more than a normal 4,5 or 6 footer can provide.

I think that's a different issue altogether. Don't be mistaken, I am all for saving the sharks and I would care less if the restaurant doesn't serve shark fins any more.

But the sharks, we aquarists keeps doesn't even fall into that category of pelagic shark. And the numbers we're talking about (number taken specifically for aquarium) doesn't even contribute significantly to the number of these species. Pollution, habitat destruction and heavy pressure from coastal subsistence fishing(do note that the fisherman do not target these carpet or bamboo sharks, they are usually by-catch and they are usually kept for food in most cases) are the main problems for these bottom dwelling sharks.

i saw the price from the book and it says $300+ tho, i might be wrong but o well. Wish i could have a bigger tank to keep em!

Sharks are not meant for home aquarium as they required large swimming space..do re-consider

yeah and also the feeding of the sharks needs to be very precise, even with regular diet plans these guys are temperamental enough to refuse food all of a sudden

oh and for the sand bed, make sure there are no heavy metal traces because this will totally mess upthe galvanic current navigation system the sharks use to regulate their swimming patterns

Not sure about the price. But i got 2 kind of 5inch (tip to tail) hasselt's bamboo shark.

If you want to keep aquarium sharks you will need a large tank that is at least 3 times the length of the shark when it is fully grow and the width of the aquarium must be at least 2 times the length of the fish. This means that a 150 cm long shark will need an aquarium that is at least 450 cm long and 300 cm in width. The tank should be shallow and offer as much surface area as possible. A round or hexagonal aquarium is to be preferred as corners might prevent the shark from swimming freely. Decorate the tank to create as much open space as possible for swimming however a few hiding places that they can hide under is appreciated. Make sure the shark can not get stuck in the hiding places.

Iwarna has one epaluette shark from Australia. Very hardy species that can tolerate low oxygen levels.

Can anyone advise for bamboo shark, what's it's size in adult stage? I'm planning to buy 1 to keep in a 6ft tank. No sand in the tank.
