Hi all, Planning to upgrade to chill-down chiller. Chill-down allows me to put it outdoors. Wifey complains of heat! Use for less than 2 mths only. $700 only

How to calculate electricy consumption for MH
Fishyfish replied to Fishyfish's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Thanks black tank for the info! -
Hello all, Does any reefer know how to calculate the electrical consumption for lighting in general? For example, I use 4 x 150w MH for 5 hrs a day. How much will this cost me a month?? Thanks!
-
Thanks! From what I read Chilldown or Hailea seems to be the best in terms of electrical cost savings. Anyone knows where to get the Chilldown chiller? Is this one of those drop-in-sump coil units which does not require another pump and plumbing?

Hi! Quick question for underwater. When you say that your corals are still ok at 30 degrees celsius, may I know if you are keeping LPS, SPS or both . If keeping SPS and they are okay, any visible signs of stress? Cheers .

Hi all, Physically removed quite a lot of nudis from the monti with a very simple and effective tool ...... a soft bristle tooth brush! There were too many and too small nudis to remove one by one with a sharp pincer so I use my trusty tooth brush. They all dropped out with each brush into a pail of tank water. The monti was quite stressed afterwards but is now recovering well in the main display tank. Of course there are a few unreachable ones still tucked away and I hope the 6 line and yellow coris can do the job but they seem more interested in chasing one another around. Have 3 6-line and 1 yellow coris now not doing their job.

Ok will try to post a pic. Well said, there seems to be many hungry reefers around here as well......

Relax Blueheaven, This is nothing new. Birds and bees are all part of the process of growing up. How do you know if they are not serious about each other? You yourself have been through that age and so you should know what's it like. Breakups are also normal. Surely you don't expect every relationship to work out? As for whether the ###### relationships are just platonic ..... you can't be serious right?

They look kinda cool although there are some in the reefing circle who are quite skeptical about them Anyways, I am glad I am not the only one trying them out. However, I suspect that some of my starfish are tryingto make a meal out of them and have at least succeeded in doing so to one or two of them. Found some broken shells that were broken in half and I am not talking about the place that hinges both halves together. It was the single shell that was broken in two. Wonder who did it Will monitor the starfishes.....suspect it is one of those fast moving types. Hi fishtalk1517, yeah I remember you...I told Reefzzz that I met you there There are some reeferes who are even using scallops and abalones. I prefer to use these types as food anyday

Hi bro Achillies, Thanks for the advise. Will get a yellow and six line wrasse tomorrow. I watched this colony grow from nothing special into a beauty and will not throw it away As my tank is big, I guess I have to get quite a few of these fishes so that at least one fish will spot them and make a meal out of them.

Help! Nudis are attacking my beautiful monti! Do I soak the whole colony in DI water? If yes, for how long? Any advice from senior reefers much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all, I bought some live marine mussels today Not for food but as a biological filter ..... Placed them in the sandbed of my refugium and ensured that a gentle current is constantly washing over them. Does any bro/sis have any experience with their upkeep and their efficiency as biological filters? Do they have any special care requirements? I do have some small starfishes in the fuge. Will that be alright? Cheers.

Hi Bro Hammy, Thanks for the advise. Got some SPS in the tank too! About 30%! But many are browing out due to high nitrates. Am working on the problem. Will consider using a sulphur denitrator apart from water changes....sigh!

Hello! Does anyone know how I might reduce my KH? The Salifert test kit gave a 16 KH reading. Could be because of CR overuse, excessive Kalkwasser use and overdosing additives. Think my water is also not ionically balanced. Will dosing magnesium help? My MG is currently 1200 and calcium is 480. PH is 8.1.

Hi Fellow reefers, Am trying to speed up the growth of coralline algae in my mixed reef. Most of my parameters are in check except that I still have to work on the nitrates which is a tad high. Flow, lighting, PH, calcium, KH, magnesium, PH, phosphates all check out fine ..... almost Have read that coralline algae seeding helps in spreading the growth of coralline algae around the tank. I would like to grow some on the back and sides of my tank. Could any kind bro (especially those successful SPS reefers) with heavily encrusted tanks spare me some scrappings of seed coralline algae please. I will buy them as well if anyone will be so kind as to sell me some. Thanks!

Help!!!! My established 5" African Midas Blenny ($60) has gone missing for 2 days! It usually is very actively swimming with my BE Anthias and is always present during feeding. Last evening during feeding, it was not around and this morning too. I thought that it might have jumped out (they are jumpers right?) but couldn't find it anywhere. I also looked at the overflow and behind the rocks but couldn't find it. Could it be sick and hiding? I am very fond of this fish and I fear the worse. Has anyone experienced their fish gone missing for a few days and then reappear again?

Anyone can advise??

Dear fellow reefers, I am currently using a DSB in a remote sump without plenum. I am thinking of employing the use of a plenum for better denitrification? Read somewhere that it is possible to DIY the plenum using egg crates? Does anyone have an idea how to employ these egg crates and what are the points to consider? Is it also possible to use an old underwater filter plate with fine mesh overlaid to hold the coaser sand before laying over the fine sand? Is it true that there should be carbon dioxide in the plenum area and if so, does it need to be bubbled in there somehow?? I am quite clueless as to how I should proceed. Can anyone please give some pointers here. Thank you.
