ok. i might be abit too harsh. First of all, from all you read about using damsel for cycling. That one is negative demostration. The thing about adding the prawn is because you want something to decay to start NNO cycle. By adding mussels, probably you can do that too. You add in good mussels to rot and die. Do you really know what Cycling is exactly? Nothing else except LRs and Sand should be in the tank prior to finish of cycle. What for you need biological filteration when cycling?

I would say much more effective. Outside media probably only like 40%, based on my guesstimation.

Volitan, considering your designed tank size, 25mm aka 1" should be enough. Personally, I do not think so much that the water going up should have any BIG pipe issue, not that it does not have any. Look at it this way, the water going up is forced by pump. But for water coming down, it will ne natural and by gravity, if pipe is too small, the water flow down will not be fast, but if pipe is big, there is more allowance for more water flow. Get my drift?

Theoratically, if everything is in a mesh bag. Chances is that more effective water flow will flow around the bag, utilizing only the media on the outside of the bag, leaving the media inside of the bag virtually untouched. Whereas in a FR, the water is 'forced' to flow through all the media, as they do have any other way to go. Therefore, theoratically, using a FR is more effective.
