  1. Depends on the chiller that you are using. Chillers work most efficiently with a certain flow rate. If you use a very strong pump to make up for the head loss through the chiller and up to your main tank, the final flow rate may not be the most efficient for your chiller. End up your chiller will take a longer time to cool down your tank => Waste more electricity. For my case, I was using a return pump to go through the chiller then back to main tank. The flow rate was really low. I'm using Eheim 1262 which pumps at 3400L/min. The head loss is around 50%!. Now, I switched to a separate Aquabee 2000 to feed my chiller and retain the Eheim to do return pump duty only.
  2. 6-8 hrs of 10k-14k lighting should be sufficient. Actinic lighting for visual and illuminence viewing only.
  3. I give up on cotton wool as filter media. Now using those gauze bags instead. I use LR in my first compartment of my sump instead of coral chips or bio-balls/home/etc.
  4. I rather that you have a separate pump to feed the chiller. The return from chiller can be back to the last compartment. Based on your drawing, it will be very taxing on the return pump to pump through the chiller and then back up into your main tank.

    DIY dosing

Anyway, the darn thing doesn't work too well. The drip rate is too fast even though I close off the needle valve fully. Looks like cannot trust cheap plastic stuff that costs 20 cents Will be getting some IV bags from a friend in medical field tomorrow to try out. I've mixed my MG and KH in the same top-off container... so far so good. No precipitation seen.

In that case I can drip the Ca into my sump directly... just that space constraint is a problem.

Since I'm going away for 10 days holiday, I will be setting up my auto top-off system. Decided to top off with Mg + KH buffer dissolved in DI water. However, Ca will be separate and built a simple gravity feed dosing which will go directly into my top-off water reservoir, since the Ca additive does not dissolve completely. Any issues with mixing the additives Mg+Ca+KH?
  8. Car HID are actually MH but lower wattage. I think most of them are 55W? For small tank it should be ok. Another thing, car HID run on 12VDC, so I'm not sure if your ballasts include transformer to step down and convert AC to DC.
  9. I replaced the pump for my Macro AS-100. Original Macro needlewheel is 1200L.
  10. I changed to Aquabee 2000 needle wheel. Can get from Dr Evil.
  11. Mostly medium size. Some small lions but different breed. Sorry, I'm not familiar with lionfishes. Fire goby look like how?

  14. Have quite a number in my tank. I keep thinking they are baby abalones
  15. I'm using pa kay floor and its ok... teak is more resistant to water compared to laminated floor.
  16. You have to test it out and see the results.
  17. Yes, you should test with salt water. Fresh water does not work with skimmer.
  18. Bought NSW from CF today to do water change. Found out that my tank has been running with 50ppm of NO3 for the past few months No wonder my corals start to die. Now not sure where the high NO3 come from, but did water change today to alleviate the problem. I suspect could be due to the distilled water that I buy? Anyway, did a test on CF's NSW. Can use this as a reference if you decide to get NSW. Ph - 8.1 Kh - 1.5meq (quite low) NO3 - 10ppm (high side) PO4 - 1ppm Ca - 376ppm Mg - 1200ppm Sg - 1.024 1 packet ~ 40L
  19. I gave up on filter wool and using a mesh bag now. Same type as those that comes with your rowa or pura mediums.
