Pop-eye means your water condition is bad. Fishes missing and die off are 2 different case. My tank has lots of mysterious cases. One year you see them, one year you dont see and then see again. Even my coral banded shrimps hiding, never out for meals. My peppermint sometimes will come out when feeding. There is alot of weird moments. Changing water is the best choice but new water must be OK too. Sometimes things dont happen immediately, it will take time to take the fishes lives. As I said there, answer given. If you want long time, Thexder way is good. For me, I will have more LR at the first place and not having need to change again. Coral chips mainly for ammonia nitrite bacs and kH chemical balance and LR is priority for nitrate bacs. Long term, you need LR to help you on nitrate problems. In my tank, corals chips in the compartment after filter pads. Then LR and DSB at the second compartment.

Its better to maintain above 1.023 if your water temp is 28C and below. I keep mine at 1.0235 at 26-28C chiller setting. I think your skimmer water level is too low. If raise more, will the water over flow out of sump if electrical suply tripped? Must be careful or else your floor will flood after supply trips.
