  1. Hi bro acidjazz, Been having a number of PMs regarding queries on keeping mangroves and where to pick them…. So Im borrowing your thread to explain since you guys are planning a trip to pick mangrove and I hope the below information will help… Illuminating mangroves A daylight lamp at 6,000 Kelvin is sufficient since they are land plants Maintaining mangrove plants Mangrove plants exports salt by producing a thin layer of salt crystals on top of their leaves. This should be washed away daily - or at least two to three times per week. In nature, raining washed these salt away… Fertilizing the substrate may be helpful in new or dry sand beds, but unnecessary or dangerous in aged aquariums where levels of dissolved organics are typically high. One notable exception may be magnesium as mangroves have been implicated as a measurable draw on the element Adaptability Along the North-East all the way from Kranji -> Seng Kang -> Pasir ris to changi, these plants are available. However, not all species of mangrove are adaptable to full strength seawater. There are 3 main species of mangrove in spore, namely the white, red & black mangroves. Only the red mangroves are able to grow in full strength seawater continuously. I tried to cultivate some white mangroves picked along the sengkang river but they died within a months. Black mangrove needs to have their roots out of the water for a period of time per day. That is achievable in nature by high & low tide. In order of high adaptability to low: Red -> White -> Black If you can find mangroves along the beach, the mangrove will be safe to be placed in aquarium. If plants picked from the swamp, the plants will already have been coated with dirt, pollutants, etc and most are exceptionally large already. U will get what i mean when u seen for yourself.. Good luck in your search... As a small token for my effort in typing out all these, please reserve a few stocks for me if you guys managed to get hold of clean young plants… hehe
  2. Hi bros, it should be the following wattage for artica if i am not wrong: 1/10 HP (75W) 1/5 HP (150W) 1/4 HP (200W) 1/3HP (250W) 1/2 HP (500W)
  3. Bro, that's alot of work to seperate them. Thought told u before the seachem ones do not have consistent grain size... hehe.. Just curious; Did u mix all the live Aragonite & seachem ones together in the tank already? Your tank doesn't seems to have water in it?
  4. nice MH bro... it's a good & reliable brand...
  5. Count me in too. I had been to some areas like changi etc to look for the species i want but with no luck. Some of them are always very dirty and have something growing on the stem already. Do not want to risk putting them in my tank. I studied mangrove and understand their needs and which species can grow in full strength seawater and those cannot. Sadly, those along sengkang river are all black mangrove and cannot acclimate to full strength seawater Had wanted to buy from Irwana aunty but was told me got no stock too...
  6. Love the way you connect the FR.. very neat & looks solid... AM use a different PVC head for your FR...
  7. and more corals too.. haha... the sand stars are really doing a good job keeping the sand bed clean... Both thumbs up for them...
  8. Aiyo, dun worry la... with the type of setup and equipments you have and if that cannot support SPS tank, my setup can support star polyps only...
  9. U sure you can get clean mangroves from Pasir Ris beach?? I brought mine all the way from Tioman right from the beach...
  10. Don't worry bro, in aquarium conditions, mangrove take a few years to become significant. Whenever, there are new growth, just cut off the shoots. But remember to leave at least a minimum of 2 leaves.. It will grow like a bonsai...
  11. never post a side view of tank before...
  12. Bro, u can take a look at hammy's tank. His tank's glass are low in iron and the clarity is there.. gravity feed to Deltec skimmer by bro skimmer is a good idea.... a pump less, save some electricity and most imptly, less a wire running around
  13. That's a food chain man.. Tang eat mangrove & cat eat fish... haha... OK lor... some other time then we all meet up again... Take more pics on your BIG BIG day tonite..
  14. The chevron Tang will eat the mangrove anot?? hehe.. Come leh, bro... let's meet at AM at 7pm today
  15. Bro, repost the galaxy pics la... it is pure lime luminous green and not brown as shown in the pics leh...
  16. Bro, are there some eagle eyes on this pcs of red mushroom.. looks like it to me
  17. Looks like tonga branch rocks... good choice mate.. i love tonga branch rocks too...
  18. Don't think need so much la bro.... 20lb of aragonite cost 40 bucks... 8 packs shld be more than sufficient... With Jaubert style, u dun need that much LR already... and it is also recommended that 2/3 of the sand bed remains uncovered... spend on aragonite & save on LR..
  19. Can see similarity in the setup... Had wanted to do the Jaubert style sand bed in the refugium initially but the growth of the mangrove roots going to disturb the centre layer of sand.. so give up the idea ... but very excited that you are setting one up... we can discuss tmr over dinner.. i will get all info i have for u... My main tank only 1inch of sand to reduce the chance of totally zero oxygen level at sand bottom where hydrogen sulfide may built up...
