Hi, I never turn it off. Afraid that it will disrupt the water surface tension and thus breaking the efficiency of skimming. Maybe your bio load is not too heavy and thus not producing much skimmate. I used to adjust it to the mark as recommended on the skimmer itself and the skimmate were like mud. Be patient, bro.
