SIGH... Murphy's law holds through again... I spent 3hrs fruitlessly trying to fix a leak in my skimmer due to rough handling on my part... Small tiny little leak became worse and worse as i kept meddling with it... and after 3 hours after I thought I had the leak under control........ a hose disloged... spilling half of my skimmers contents all over the floor... attacked my wooden table, NEARLY killed my portable harddisk (which was on the floor) wet everything in a 1m radius.. etc etc etc... Worst tank incident to date siah... some more worked on it till 3am and had to wake up at 6am.. sigh sigh sigh... In the end I ran out of glue and gave up... with superglue all over my hands, a leaking skimmer and an insane string of bad luck I finally put my old weipro back on line... Anyway, got back from work today, fixed the leak and skimmer is back online again... hopefully it won't leak anymore

Hi guys, I was reading in RC some time back that someone used superglue (normal) then while it was wet sprinkled some baking soda over it to form a better seal... Tried it today to fix a leak in my skimmer.. and I must say.. WOW.... this thing turns ROCK SOLID almost immediately upon contact with the baking soda... Buy those superglue 4 for $1.00 best... just throw the glue everywhere then sprinkle and voila.. super solid But be careful it's so damn solid you need to literally chisel your way through it... and it's pretty messy so unless you are like me who doesn't give a damn about DIY looks then go ahead and try it.. Just tot I would share... Ervine

How to prevent microbubbles from entering tank
ervine replied to ervine's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Ah crap.. I've tried everything except getting a new sump.. I'm still getting microbubbles!!! Piangs these things just flow right through my filter foam siah!!.. ARGH!!!! I give up... -
Possible.. but I saw for myself that it was going after my sri lankan scooter blenny when it stopped to rest near the crab... Can't hyposaline the rock coz it doesn't stay in one place leh... and usually it peeks out from the rocks hidden below...

Detol still never die??

so easy to crush ah? Can hardly get a hold of them let alone crush them.. haha
-
Yup just change it regularly.. although I wonder if this would result in ammonia and nitrite production.. which is worse than nitrates... coz the foam being "void" of bacteria will not be able to break down the food particles as such ammonia and nitrite come in... not sure leh... for me the foam is there to trap bubbles

as a return pump? or circulation pump?
-
Hi guys, I lost 2 firefishes recently.. no corpse, not stuck in overflow or whatever.. I suspect they were snatched by stray crabs who attacked them while they slept... Recently spotted one or two crabs but they didn't fall for my trap, neither was I nimble enough to catch them with pincers.. So I went to stir up some kalk paste placed it in a syringe and shot into the hole containing the crab... didn't see the crab come out but it could be that it escaped through another hole or something.. So the thing is.. does kalk paste kill crabs? Or can they withstand it? Thanks... Ervine

Kalk mixture loh.. kalk + water mixed... The reactor basically stores water + kalk and is stirred once in a while to ensure that the mixture doesn't start to cake.. You have to put both water and kalk powder inside the reactor.. the pump stirs things up occasionally and the top up device pushes water out of and into the tank...

I see i see... still not bad lah quite nice colour

Schemetic ah... got a lot online leh.. I connect the pump via hoses loh... nothing special.. Sorry ah not much time to do a good schemetic, started work liaos

Parts of Sand Bed Turning Black
ervine replied to unknown's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Hm... but where should the bubbles be forming at the top or bottom of the DSB? -
but brine shrimp not much nutritional value leh...
-
BTW guys.. found an internship liaos.. starting tomorrow.. Wish me luck!!

It's basically a sealed storage cylinder.. What happens is the circulation pump keeps "stirring" the kalk mixture inside to ensure that the mixture stays in motion (otherwise might end up caking or something)... There's an inlet and an outlet for the canister, fresh water enters the inlet and kalk solution exits the outlet into the tank... simple as that...

Looks better than the last change... but likewise buttons a little too splashy.. hehe...

Not very good pic but this is my DIY kalkreactor, DIY autotop up and jerry can acting as a water reservoir, all connected together... tank is on other side... Basically the kalk is stirred by a rena pump every 45mins for 15mins... auto-top up senses the water level in the sump decreasing then turns on an airpump, yes airpump, which pressurises the jerry can which pushes water out of the jerry can into the kalk reactor which then in turn pushes kalk solution out of the reactor into the tank.. voila..

Hm.. looks like something that can be eaten... don't get why there's the yellow background though.. new nuggest from Macs?

Just started a few days back.. no difference if you ask me but it's supposed to have long term benefits not short term ones... My fishes don't like mysis... wonder why...

Okie will try my best.. thanks!

How? Use a drip method, which means u stir up a bit of kalk everyday and drip the clear solution into your tank manually. Or use a kalk reactor which automatically mixes and stores ur kalk, then coupled with an auto top of device this will allow kalk to be dosed according to your evaporation rate... How will it help? If you have lifestock in your tank which tank up large amounts of calcium, eg clams, SPS, etc.. then it'll help... otherwise if yours is FOWLR then no point
