I used to hand stir then I switched over to using a cheapo pump... never turned back... the pump really is MUCH easier and faster... hope this helps!

18W I think is not enough, go for 36W 2ft PL lights at least... also the type of macro algae makes a difference, try cheato (buy some from online reefers), seems to be quite easy to grow...

i have one which doesn't touch hair algae at all... so far only 2 things have worked for me, 1. seahare (but died after a few weeks) 2. toothbrush.. but IMO, prevention is better than cure.. Oh do go check out a anti hair algae chemical that ML brings in... heard it works..

how effective are they btw? been wanting to get my hands on some but can never seem to find them...

last time I bought I went to the yellowpages to find a wood merchant in ubi industrial estate that would sell me chengal wood cut to size... sorry but I cannot remember the exact merchant anymore... If you want to DIY take heed, chengal wood is very hard to machine with hand tools, trust me, I did mine with chengal...
