  1. bro.. there are a lot of venturi based skimmers out there which range widely in price and performance... perhaps u can be more specific in a particular brand?
  2. I used to run a gravity feed auto-top off... biggest problem is to get a big container which will is rigid, because normal softer containers will just collapse inwards due to the negative pressure built up inside it... also, the container must be 100% air tight.. one small leak and you'll get yourself a leak...
  3. don't disturb the sand bed too much bro... esp if you are having a DSB... if I were u i'll just take a chop stick to probe the sand a little... that'll allow the underlying sand to cover the top layer of sand...
  4. try luring them out with a brands essence of chicken bottle with a little market prawn inside it (or dried prawn I found works too)... Tilt the bottle, crab goes in, cannot come out...
  5. turn on aircon best! cool tank + cool yourself at the same time! esp for me coz my tank is in my room... tank maintain under 30degC but I suffer in the room unless I turn on the aircon...
  6. I going for 3 weeks.. so got more than enough time to shop for marine stuff.. hehe.. but to go to HK don think got the money liao.. coz I going inner mongolia for a tour...
  7. not advisable unless you constantly add ice... the point is to keep temperature constantly low, I doube the ice will stay long enough for that
  8. This is quite true.. I got this quite a few times before, even the smallest wound which i cannot see will sting as if there's electricity in the water...
  9. double agreed... unless you REALLY have the skills then go for it.. but often if you buy the material yourself you might just end up paying more coz the tank makers usually have their own supplier for materials... but seriously.. it's safety first.. if you don't have the skills or are not confident of your skills don't risk it!
  10. i found that my DC fan blowing across my 1.5ft sump is more effective than my AC fan blowing across my 2.5ft tank... I suspect it's because the sump has more water movement especially cascading here and there which result it better evaporation... not to mention for some reason my DC fan feels like it's moving more air than my AC fan...
  11. Hm... okie... i'll go take a look see... I also doubt there's anything really good
  12. usually the bigger ones will tend to "rise" up to the top when mixed... so you'll tend to get bigger particles on top and smaller ones below... If you are going for a DSB then you should only have grade 0 sand.. maybe with a layer of larger grade over it for decorative purposes (and preventing sand storms)
  13. Hi guys, Going to go Shanghai for several weeks... was wondering if there's any reef stuff that's worth getting over there? Not livestock of course... Was thinking of getting a new skimmer... but how to lug back to S'pore? Anyone bought stuff like that from Shanghai before? Ervine.
  14. i too recently had a heat scare... came back and I though everything was fine... but then when I touched the water it seemed warmer than usual.. but my chiller temperature was reading 28... which is fine for me.. Then only after a while did I realise that the chiller pump was no longer functioning... and coz I dumped my old digital thermometer I didn't know the true temperature of the tank... not to mention one of my adapters for the DC cooling fan konked out... luckily I din lose much before I rectified the problem... had to cool the tank with my room's airconditioning! Prevention is better than cure man...
  15. Oooo.. how much? I also wanna know...

    Zoo price

nice specimen! but then how accurate are the colours of zoos (or corals for that matter)? Coz under different lighting conditions they look completely different... I can never seem to judge...
  17. agreed... i can still see my PVC pipes and eggcrates quite easily...
  18. Huh? why? I do it salt first then water leh... I also use a powerhead... used to stir it manually but I realised it's just too tedious to do that...
  19. put a fan blowing across something like your sump or where you have maximum movement of water over a surface, like an overflow... i find that blowing a fan just across the water surface alone is not as effective.. of course you'll have to top up water more frequently.. that's when you need to invest in a tubby or other auto top-up devices
  20. Hm.. i just keep it in the bag that they provide.. coz coralife salt comes in a zip lock already.. so I just zip it back and to be doubly sure I put it in a plastic bag and tie it up... So far quite ok... only got once I didn't zip properly then it was one big mess..
  21. eat fruits with salt sprinkled on them... suck on strepsils like a baby... drink lots and lots of fluids.... and of course, see a doctor if it persists...
  22. donno how comfortable you are with contacts but my eyes are quite sensitive and contacts + saltwater don't go too well for me... My gf had no issues with it though.. so I guess it depends on you
  23. yeah it's supposed to be for residential purpose... but i gonna do some SOHO kinda thing...
