Big spider? Check this out Singapore blue tarantula Haha...marbles..Still remember..from 10 marbles I ended up with I think 10-20kg of marbles. Mostly won. Can't remember where I stuffed them now..

Wow..so many replies..thanks..will look up the Hailea ozonizer..

They stated 5 pc of soft corals not exceeding 5kg. Does this include water? Does it mean 5 pc of rocks on which the corals are attached or 5 pc of frags? It's so ambiguous..anyone can twist such guidelines to their own advantage. If bringing in ric florida/U.S zoanthids just pack as many as you want, keep them moist and stay within the 5kg limit. You will be a rich man..even possibly covering the cost of your air ticket. Customs officers are usually not well-trained to identify livestock. If coelacanths were the size of clownfish they could very well be declared as groupers and I suppose no one would question you.

Trying my hand at golden banded boxing shrimp (S. cyanoscelis). Day 1 larvae. Notice the unusual projections I circled in red. No work done on this species so far..larval duration anywhere between 43-210 days based on information on other species. I just hope it's below 2 months.

Hmmm..currently at day 38 with a survival of about 38.8% in the upwelling system. Only about 97 larvae left from the original 250 larvae I put in..probably due to cannibalism. As for the other batch from the pic above (kept in 20-L rectangular glass aquarium) the larval count is down to 204 with a survival of about 34.2%. Both mass rearing trials from same batch of larvae..not really much difference in survival from the different methods but those in the upwelling system are about twice the size of those kept in the tank. They will get to about 21 mm before metamorphosing and judging from their size they still have a fair bit of growing to do. The largest is maybe only 10+ mm at best. Can't beat the 42 days record by Waikiki aquarium..sigh.. probably will take another 2 weeks or so before I get my first settlement if nothing goes wrong *touchwood*. Currently feeding them enriched baby and adult live brineshrimp, blended seafood, and freshly mashed penaied shrimp postlarvae I harvested from the beach. Just tiring me out doing the same old routine everyday..but guess will get used to it..maybe another 6 months of doing the same stuff. Pic not very clear.. I'm a bad camera man.

Crinoid a.k.a featherstar. Impossible to keep even for experts.

Hmmm..nice pic..but would be better if you can reduce the size with microsoft paint by maybe 50% before posting? Keep an eye on the camel shrimp..if you notice your mushrooms getting picked on most probably its the work of that fella.

Sometimes the best way to make a person move on is to make the person hate you. Don't think many people see this side of things. But think of it this way, is'nt the reason ridiculous and humiliating? What would make a person say that after 2 years? If he was purely after the boobies he could have chosen correctly from the start..unless her boobies shrunk or something *touchwood*. There you go~

Not sure if many reefers here actually use ozone generators. Anyway is there any brand that is value for $ besides Red Sea? I don't really trust the brand Red Sea anymore after using their salts and seeing their skimmers.
-
If it's wasting away slowly most probably it's starving to death. Get a glass bottle, invert it over the sponge, and squirt phytoplankton under the bottle for it to feed. Or alternatively dose phytoplankton to the whole tank if your skimmer can cope.

Not recommended. The cellular balance of sodium and potassium ions are crucial for cell membrane functions and energy generation in cells. So if you dose sodium hydroxide, sodium ion concentration outside the cell will increase and disrupt this balance. Do note that marine fish do drink and excrete the salt. Imagine the amount of sodium the fish will have to excrete if you dose NaOH.. Ca(OH)2 is used as Ca can be taken up for coral/coralline growth. And each Ca ion will supply 2 OH- ions as compared to 1 OH- ion if you dose NaOH. Thus Ca(OH)2 is a stronger base and will help maintain pH better.

I second ATI tubes. There is a difference between the overall lifespan of the tube and the efficient lifespan of the tube. If a fluorescent tube used in an ordinary setting lasts 2-3 years does this mean it is good? Different brands can last for similar periods in this respect if similar ballasts/lighting hours are applied. In all lighting..be it FL, T5s or MH spectrum shift and probably intensity loss is something that would occur over time. This should be the mindset needed to judge bulbs on...not the overall lifespan. I would rather have a good tube last for 6 months, as compared to a similar tube which lasts 1 year plus in which it was only operating at optimum efficiency for maybe 3-4 months.

how to wean lionsfish onto non-living things...
FuEl replied to AvaNte's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Tie a single knot. The string should come loose itself when the lion "inhales" the fish in. It works on frogs..so should work on fish. -

Tie a string to the tail end of the feeder fish. Dangle it in front of the lionfish. -
Not exactly expert. I myself have given up on anemones. Considering their lifespan of several decades in the wild I would rather leave them to the oceans. Don't think bloodworms is a good choice. Marine fish need marine food. You can always blend your own mix using prawns, squid, mussels, etc. As for the behavior its rather normal especially if the clownfish is full. The clownfish might just be using its anemone as a "fridge" to store his food without knowing the anemone will eat it? Or maybe like you said it is feeding the anemone knowingly. I'm not sure.
-
The disgusting stuff oozed out was undigested food items. The anemone probably exhausted itself trying to digest the food and this led to its ultimate demise as it was unable to regain the energy lost through digestion from photosynthesis alone. Bubble-tips need very very small meals as they might waste energy trying to digest oversized or over frequent meals. The key is to feed wisely. Even in the wild for a decent sized anemone, it might take a week or more to fully digest half a market prawn and regain the energy lost through digestion.

The scientific term is Protandric Simultaneous Hermaphroditism (PSH). It's common to all Lysmata species but rare in other shrimps. This means that the shrimp is born as a male and upon reaching maturity, functions both as a male and a female. However they cannot self fertilize. Thus any 2 individuals can pair up and mate. Cleaner shrimp are relatively to raise in the beginning on Artemia. It's only during later stages that you get problems such as alternative diets and keeping dead food items suspended.

Try blending seafood and let the blend sink to the sandbed.

The only things which take phytoplankton are filter-feeders like clams, tubeworms, scallops, etc and other zooplankton like copepods. Corals need meat-based foods and they don't ingest phytoplankton.

Normally you have to wait 12-14 days for the eggs to hatch starting from the first day you see them. Shortest larval duration for skunk cleaner so far is 42 days achieved by Waikiki Aquarium in hawaii. Normally lasts 2-3 months due to lack of knowledge on dietary requirements. Then again successful settlement of larvae is real low, only around 20% for commercial companies. The larvae will take newly hatched brine shrimp from the start, but the problem will be removing most of uneaten brine shrimp the next day and replacing them with newly hatched ones. Got to get enough water flow to keep them suspended and late-stage larvae don't handle aeration very well...tends to break off their long 5th pair of legs.

Yep agree with you madmac. Carbonate hardness (kH) often depletes faster compared to Ca levels due to neutralization by acids such as carbonic acid. You might want to consider kalkwasser drips or maybe even a kalk reactor such that the hydroxide ions can neutralize the acids in place of carbonate ions.

Haha...no problem la.. got captive bred hedgehog in Sg liao. I'm not surprised if got ferrets too. But if you buy = "criminal" act. All this small matter compared to civet cat. Remember that time SARs was reported to be caused by the civet in China? After that if I did'nt remember wrongly someone abandoned their civet cat in Serangoon North. Now got bird flu..lucky no reptile flu if not authorities sure use it as a reason to support their ban for reptiles. Now I worry for bird trade.

Happy bday! Nice looking zoanthids and acros. Anyway if the frags continue to stn you might want to try superglue gel. Apply it above the receding mark and see if it helps. Cheers~

A freshwater bath will work better than a freshwater dip. Performed it on a maroon clown before. Think I left it in aged freshwater for 10-15 minutes. Remember to adjust the pH of the freshwater similar to that of seawater though.

Talking about dogs I live in this neighbourhood. If you walk through the neighbourhood at night the dogs will bark and make such a din. However if you drive/cycle through the dogs just keep quiet. Weird is'nt it? Sigh...reptiles are not vocal animals and they are happy just being quiet. Considering the built-up extent of Sg would'nt they make perfect pets without disturbing neighbours? Just like how fish leave neighbours alone. Or maybe even hedgehogs or ferrets? Dog lovers might find them a better choice compared to dogs. End result = less dogs in spca.
