  1. likely it's a pump that's sitting in water...happened a few times to a friend.
  2. Cleaner shrimps will eat whatever they can get their tiny claws on! Most dead fish and other shrimps. But they're typically not aggressive, i.e. they won't kill other healthy fishes/shrimps, at least not from what I've seen.
  3. I've seen cleaner shrimps "clean" injured fishes where the injured fishes have an open wound. In the process of cleaning the open wound, the cleaner shrimps will inadvertently aggrevate the wound and make it worse. Eventually, the fish dies because the wound gets bigger/worse, and it then becomes a meal for the shrimp.
  4. Patience...having an extended cycling time won't do any harm as compared to a short cycling time in which the tank may not be ready. Just ensure that the water in the tank is always moving. You didn't say how deep your sand bed is.
  5. I had a banded goby that learnt how to eat with the other fishes, and continued to sift sand. it went from bone skinny to fat. Just died when it decided to try and escape from my tank. Found it on my floor all dried up. Just bought another from LFS at pasir ris...not sure name of LFS...it's the one with the giant arowana at the entrance gate. Here's a pic of the banded goby... http://www.timstropicals.com/Saltwater/fis...ennie/index.asp
  6. I think the pump rating for the deflector is about 1200lph...same as hydor.
  7. any grains of sand or other small hard bits stuck in the gear system? Same thing happened to the hydor type and it only worked again after I stripped it and found grains of sand stuck in the plastic gears...
  8. have to use a lot of force to pry open lip of cover...you'll have to open section by section...
  9. I've paired maroon clowns by putting both in a separate tank with a transparent divider, remove the divider after a few days and watch and see from there. If they are still fighting for the next couple of days, divide them again and keep the cycle going. When you remove the divider, make sure that there are some rocks for the clowns to hide so that they don't constantly see each other. You need to taken the maroons and put them in a tank/holding box where they have not established their territory. Maroon clowns are vicious and will attack kill other clowns.
  10. strange...I can't find a post I'd put in about 1-hour ago under a different thread...this is what it said...roughly... I don't normally post my opinions about transactions with other forumers...this is my first "virgin" opinion posting... My dealings with Vandeam have been fair, and he's kept his word in my dealings with him. In any deal that I transact via a forum or 2nd-hand site, it's very much "buyer beware". The seller offers to sell an item at a certain price, and if you as a buyer agrees to buy it after seeing the item, than the risk of that item is passed from the seller to the buyer. I have purchased an item from a LFS at $19, only to find the same item being sold at another LFS for $10. I can consider the first LFS a cheat, a con, etc...but stupid me...my mistake. But I've also found other items at the same "cheat" LFS being sold for a reasonable price. I've also bought livestock from LFS, only to find that these fishes don't eat, or just can't survive, and eventually die. I can't go back for a refund! Are we now saying that we expect other forumers to "guarantee" the items that they are selling? I post an item for sale, someone sees the post, is ok with the price, contacts me, views the item and completes the sale, then that's the end of that transaction. The same applies when I buy something from someone else. It'll be a good buy, fair transaction, or stupid-me! If AT's spoken to Vandeam already, then can we consider this case closed? All this flaming is really killing the spirit of this forum which I (and probably many others) have been enjoying. Let there be peace...
  11. multiple hermit crabs within the same tank are OK...
  12. ...re-scape tank without removing fishes...avalanche...dead shrimp, goby, etc...
  13. I typically prefer to keep my opinions on dealings within any forums to myself...but here it is for the first time... Maybe I've been fortunate, but my dealings with v_nd___m have been fair. If he's selling stuff at a price that you're willing to pay, then so be it. There is an implied code of honor within this forum that if you are given something or have purchased something at a low price from another reefer, then you should pass on that item to another reefer with the same act of charity. Some will keep to that code, some won't. If I'd purchased an item from a LFS for $20, and have found it at another LFS for $10, then that's the last time I'll buy from that LFS. But I've also found that there are other items at that same LFS that are reasonably priced. I've purchased items from other reefers that have been fairly priced, and others that have been priced higher. But I made that decision to buy without being forced into the purchase. In the second hand market, the term "buyer beware", must always be remembered.
  14. Here's what I would do...not sure if correct or not: I'd suggest re-using as much of the original water from the old tank as is possible, i.e. put the fishes in a pail with the old water, and have an air-pump running. Transfer as much of the old water from punggol to sembawang. Do not transfer tank and water together...not a good idea. Set up 3ft tank with old water at new location and let it run for a little while to settle down, then you can add fish.
  15. I've seen a hermit crab catch on to the tail of a small common clown and not let go, regardless of whatever I did to the crab. imho, crabs, hermits included, are scavengers and will eat whatever they can get their claws on.
  16. Really depends on how many fishes you intend to stock your tank with. Suggest that you let the tank run only with live rock for a few weeks before you add any fishes. There have been setups which run the whole gamut of equipment, and others with a minimal amount of equipment. It'll be different if you intend to add corals later. This can become a very expensive hobby, so decide how much you can spend and stick to that budget, else it'll never end! Finally, the main ingredient that you'll need is patience, lots of patience!!!
