SRC TOTM Jun 05 by Danano
danano replied to Achilles Tang's topic in SRC Tank Of The Quarter Winners Forum
I got my ATI T5 Powerlux retrofits from eAN. I like them coz of the excellent reflectors and sleek design. I believe AquaConnect is coming out with something similar very soon but theirs is a 4 tube design, instead of 3. -
How to take good care of Green Mandarin Fish?
danano replied to heman's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Sharing my experience... I've had my one and only Mandarin for almost a year now and it's the fattest fish in the tank. The 60+kg of quality LR, I believe, is providing it with an abundent source of food. It picks on the LR the whole day! It does not have to compete with other fish for food. -
Hermits are herbivores although they are known to scavenge. The assorted hermits in my tank are primarily herbivores. Their diet consists mainly of filamentous algae. Small amounts of NH3/NH4 and NO2 should be fine. Just do regular water changes (which won't be difficult for a nano tank) for peace of mind.

Hi Calcinus, Welcome to SRC! Here are some thoughts to consider to get you started... If all you're intending on keeping in your 1ft nano is some live rock (LR) and hermits, then you may want to consider those simple "all-in-one" setups. They are small and compact with almost everything built-in (filters, powerhead and all). They are made of acrylic I think. Alternatively, I've seen small square glass tanks as well. You'll need to get a set of power compact (PL) lights and a small hang-on filter. Both approaches would be ideal for your office given the space constraints. Also, you'll just need a few kg of sand (Grade 1 or 0) costing a few dollars. With the little live stock that you'll be keeping, your nano should be pretty maintenance free. 20 to 30 % monthly water changes should suffice. I do not recommend keeping "turtle weed" or macroalgae. Just spend a little on cured quality LR. I expect that you'll need just a few kg. What's your budget for the entire nano setup? Happy nano reefing! Dan

At 15"(W) x 17"(H), a 6060 may be a little too strong, even if you break the flow somewhat with your LR structure. The 6000/6100 with single controller, that allows you to control the flow rate, would work but will set you back a few hundred bucks. Ever considered Maxijet 1200's?

Hmmm... this would be a precise example of the type of language and animosity that is not conducive for a fun and enjoyable online reefing community and experience. Besides, basic online etiquette dictates that letters in caps equates to "shouting". Let there be peace...

Your tank is looking awesome DeepBlue! don't mean to sound like a broken record but... Your blue Tenuis.............. Seriously, however, it's looking a bit stubby. You may want to give it more flow.

The rumours, the hearsay, the gossip, the indiscretion, the irresponsible posting/PMs, the unnecessary/inflammatory remarks, the rivalry, the pettiness, etc, etc... is this what SRC has become? I sure hope not but the signs sure exist. It's not a money thing, it's not about "cheonging", it's not about who buys what or how much they spend or what equipment they have... why should you/we care? If you consistently think about what others are doing, then you should be taking a long hard look at yourself. If you gossip and spread rumours/stories about others (reefers or LFS) without all the facts or based on hearsay, then you should take a long hard look at yourself. Here's a call to all SRC reefers... it's not too late to change and make this reefing community a better and more enjoyable place (again)... back to the 'good old days'. And our words and actions should extend beyond this online forum, to the physical world out there as well. After all, if reefing was not something to be enjoyed and shared, why are we all here? SOLUTION: "Think Twice, or Three Times If You Have To, Before You Act"

danano replied to DeepBlue's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
i have them in one or two sps colonies as well. should be fine. they don't seem to bother corals. -
hi AP, did you drop by Irwana this evening? Mostly small colonies, good space fillers in between larger ones.
-
That's coz I've never met you before (in person) and that evening, Roidan mentioned you'd be down at ML to have a look at the LT's... simply put 2 and 2 together... but turned out wrong person Shake my hand? Hmmm... the truth is I'd be honoured to shake your hand , your 4 x 4 would be a dream setup for many reefers. Look forward to seeing your tank one of these days!
-
sometimes, it's not about brute strength but speed and agility... and if you are small, you can squeeze in between the crowd... when do you plan on being at Irwana later... maybe I'll bump into you there

ever considered taking half-day leave to cheong?
-
Wow... look at all that empty space just waiting to be populated

Simply awesome Tuan! Whereabouts in the UK do you live? My job brings me there about 2 to 3 times a year. If not too far from London, mind if I drop by for a peek at your reef? Hmmm... ever thought of using a couple of ATI parabolic reflectors with those T5s? Dan
-
Kevin, any updates on your stunning nano, especially under your new T5s...

how are they doing?
