Bi-color blenny (3") & candy cane (8 polyps)
danano replied to danano's topic in Sell off/Pasar Malam Shop
Ideally, I would like to let go both (candy cane and bicolor) at the same time today but willing to sell separately if no takers for both together. -

Bi-color blenny (3") & candy cane (8 polyps)
danano replied to danano's topic in Sell off/Pasar Malam Shop
The candy cane has been with me for almost 2 years and the bicolor blenny 9 months. The candy cane started out with 3 polyps and has split a few times. They are in need of a good home. -
$3 each or $5 for both. Collection at Courts Bukit Timah after 6pm today. Pls PM me if interested. Thanks.

It's important to have adequate LR in your tank. There should be enough LR for your tang(s) to graze/feed on throughout the day. That way, they are less likely to change their diet. After it's settled in, feed it nori and other freeze-dried and/or frozen foods - for a balanced diet. My tangs stomachs are full from grazing on LR the whole day. I supplement their algae diet with nori and marine flake/pellets every other day. On occasion, they get mysis or brine. Some tangs are "more reef-safe" than others.

I saw a sample today, very professionally made. Fuel, are those 4ft T5s in the pics?

All, let's be more positive and constructive in our comments. Change starts by looking and reflecting on your own thoughts, actions, posts and words/comments. Remember, it's not about what others are doing, it's about what you can do to make a difference. Every single one of us has a part to play, no matter how large or small, in making the reefing community in Singapore a more fun and more "happening" place. blueheaven, thanks for sharing your vision... it's something that we can all strive towards. In some ways, it's already happening here at SRC.

Certain sps are hardier than others and may be able to withstand less than ideal water conditions, while others will show signs of stress within minutes or hours. From the pics you posted, it appears like the sps colony is showing signs of calcium carbonate precipitation (CaCO3). STN and thinning of tissue may be early symptoms. This is possibly due to an ionic imbalance in your tank - the very high calcium concentration may be causing precipitation of CaCO3. If there is indeed an imbalance, do several water changes to dilute this imbalance. minsmarine, to help us help you better, perhaps you could share with us you tank husbandry and more details on your tank setup. Just going by your water parameters alone, your tank does not appear ready for sps. One more thing, please try to refrain from using all caps in your posts. I believe IanJ was merely pointing out specific water parameters that in his opinion are not conducive for sustaining sps. He was just being brief and to the point in his suggestion. Dan

I'd say get rid of them if you can. There are, however, a few species of zoos that I have found to be generally "sps safe". One sort is the pink zoanthid - the base of my sps just grows over these. Another is the small buttons that are no more than 4-5mm across and have either an orange or green centre - the base of sps grows around these. The zoanthids mentioned came with Fiji LR.

SRC TOTM Jun 05 by Danano
danano replied to Achilles Tang's topic in SRC Tank Of The Quarter Winners Forum
I'm using the non-dimmable sort. ATI makes dimmable ones but you'll have to check with eAN on availability. Are you thinking off getting a set or two to supplement your MHs? -

Thanks Lee. It is but a result of inspiration from the "old timers" and other amazing reefers/tanks here and in other international reefing forums. Next TOTM? Hmmm... soon I think. -
Any pic updates?

Joe, it will be interesting to see how your sps colour up under those Aquaz's. Do keep us posted. Try to take before and after pics if you can. But I understand that you're thinking about replacing some of the tubes to another type, right? Btw, what would constitute 'standard 20kk tubes'? I'm curious...
-
I believe ATI's Sunpro is 6.5KK. One of our sponsors, eAN, carries it. You'll have to check with Edmund for stock.
-
What mix of corals do you plan on keeping? Note that the actinics are not very bright. The blue tubes are more intense and bring out the purples in certain corals.
-
How quickly they recover or die really all depends on your water and lighting conditions. Perhaps you'd like to share with us your tank setup and water parameters. Pictures would help too...
-
If you are space constrained, I'd say add the T5 actinics last. I suggest adding more 10KK T5s for a good balance of growth and colour. Mix in a 17KK (blue) for stronger purples. 10KKs are very white, so mixing in a blue would soften the appearance as well (i.e. more pleasing to the eye). 6.5KK tends to be more yellow. Mixed with blue will give you a whiter appearance but you might get banding. What are your tank dimensions? Can you fit 6 tubes over your tank? If you are serious about keeping sps, short of using MH, that's what is needed to achieve good results with T5s. Tube/Colour and reflector choice is crucial. This is in addition to maintaining pristine water conditions, strong circulation, optimal CA & dKH levels, etc, etc...

The earlier pic was overexposed, hence the look of RTN. The colony looks ok and don't worry about the tips, probably damaged due to poor placement. It should recover given ideal conditions. Btw, what colour is the colony supposed to be?
-
Lighting is but one important component. After looking at the thread on 'keeping sps', do you feel that you and your tank are sps ready? Perhaps you could share with us a picture of entire setup. Btw, not sure if you mentioned it earlier, but how long has your tank been up? Take a closer read... I shared a little about lighting here... http://www.sgreefclub.com/srctotm/srctotmdanano.htm

That colony looks almost completely RTNed. Did any of your frags survive? Do you have any other sps in your tank or is this your first? Your tank may not be ready for sps. Check out the following link for more info on keeping sps (if you haven't already). It will give you an idea of the basic requirements to keep sps. http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1629 Most importantly, your water parameters need to be ideal. Your lights (2x 24W T5) are inadequate for keeping sps. What T5 tube combination do you have?

Nice tank Ryan. You should be able to squeeze in a Tunze in there for improved flow. But you may need to shift some of your LPS. You can break the flow of the Tunze by placing it behind a heavy piece of LR. Adjust the placement until you achieve the desired flow pattern. If you do decide on a Tunze, I suggest going for a 6060 standalone or a 6000/6100 with single controller (if your budget permits). The controller has several useful features/functions, allowing you to vary the flow rate and pattern Dan

Hey Scarab, some of your corals are just as nice Your frustration lasts only as long as you are looking away from your tank.
-
Yup, that's it! From what I've seen, the colour will be darker and somewhat deeper under MH.
-
Very nice tank Des. That lethal hydno looks like it's just going to keep growing and growing, killing everything in its path. Do you have plans to move, remove or frag it? It look encrusted on LR though.

Hmmm... this would be another very clear example of the type of immaturity, language and animosity that is not conducive for a fun and enjoyable online reefing community and experience. Besides, basic online etiquette dictates that letters in caps equates to "shouting". Please, let there be peace...
