Output of protein skimmer at sump
planetg replied to Froggy's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
froggy, my skimmer pulls out lots of gunk cos i'm using an external skimmer and my flow rate is very low. the key is to control the skimmer output to produce as thick foam as possible. you wouldn't want lots of watery foam in the skimmer neck. just my experience. -
hon, beautiful tank. but where are the 6 tangs for yours! camera shy?
-
hi all, i understand the best way to use a chiller with a sump is to take the input from the drain and return to the tank input drain -> chiller -> tank however, if i prefer to tee-off from my return pump and return to the sump, is it ok to return the chiller output to the input drain area? my concern is efficiency of the chiller (i.e. the heat exchange). dun wanna 'short circuit' the chiller if u know what i mean. any comments?

was also looking for them but maxima said it's not available at this moment.

i think it's better to cycle with your lights. what happened was during my cycling, my lights was not ready yet. it did go thru the diatoms phase. then when my diatoms disappeared, i switched on my halides and t5, the diatoms resurfaced and the cyling continues! so u shd cycle with your lights on.

Help! Layer of 'dirt' on the surface!
planetg replied to tanlc's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
does it look brown or red? if brown and bubbling, probably diatoms. if red and slimy, probably cyano. a pic would be good. -
mine has been going everywhere except the sand! just be patient

yup in the future. really regretted not spending enuff time to think thru. due to work commitments, just spent a couple of mins with the tank maker and then viola! sump not to my liking! i would like to use an external return pump in future (prob a couple of months later) and i think deltec is pretty energy efficient. hope pacificbetta can give us a good account of this pump. btw, those flex hose really did the trick for now!! at least 3x diff.

can't wait for you to hook it up and do a review for us! i'm looking for an external pump in a couple of months time.
-
of course i respect all our founder's expert advice. always understood right? hehe. thanx anyway. i will get those clips but since my return pump is submerged, is there other plastic type ones? btw, i just dumped unrinsed contraphos in for abt 2 hours and my skimmer is doing OT now!!!
-
here's how it looks like b4. in the future, i will change my sump and use an external pressure rated return pump.

an update to those following the thread. i re-did my plumbing tonight. a. cut the pvc pipe just before the it enters the overflow box b. install the 3/4" barb adapter i got from marine depot some time ago c. install the 16/22mm eheim hose from the barb adapter to my Eheim 1262 d. turn it on and viola! i get more than 3 times the return flow that i remove my nozzle and considering looking for the y-loclines to fit in. conclusion. i'm really happy i re-did the plumbing and heeded joe's advice. thanx joe for discouraging me to buy a new pump. as for those who do not believe how much you kill the flow rate with elbows, you gotta try it to believe it! dr_evil may want to consider going hose all the way to the overflow input. here's a pic for you. cheers

time to add my report on this issue! i did not rinse it with water after reading tanzy's comments on the iron hydroxide and dumped it into my sump at a reasonable high flow area. i used a good looking filter bag i got from sealife as expected, the sump turned brown and in 2 mins, the whole tank turned brown. i then observed all the life stock and said my prayers! to my relieve, no signs of stress. in fact the brown colour is subsiding quickly and the effect of dawn/dusk is actually cool! it has been an hour and everything seems fine. cheers

Week 2 - 10th Nov - 16th Nov 2003
planetg replied to Regal's topic in Weekly LFS Stocks Report / LFS Info Centre
roidan, i saw quite a few at Reborn yesterday. dunno if it's sold but do check it out if u want to. -
hi tigger, thanx for the advice. it will not make much difference even if i turn it ard. i concluded that it's because of my 2 elbows at the sump area. horizontal distance do make only a little difference. i tested with a flex hose direct from the 1262 to my tank at ard 6ft height with a 3m hose. the flow rate was excellent. will fix it up permanently and hope the flowrate will improve. in fact, it shd be improve substantially. thanx for the thoughts. cheers.

Ocellaris,can they cope with currents?
planetg replied to aStRoBo|'s topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
they love current!!! my pair is practicing 4ft dash along the flow of my tunzes!!! -
Thanx for all the interest. Tank, LR and MH have been sold to happy reefers. Left with only Item C c. 2 unused sets of Iwasaki 250W Single-ended Metal Halide Lamp + Capacitor + Ballast. This is not a ready to use set. You gotta DIY a hood or canopy or use your current setup. (only $200 for both sets including brand new timers) Will update with more stuff soon.

after a discussion with joe, i think i'll heed his advice on chopping as many elbows as possible and use flex pipes. hopefully i'll get a better flow rate. i bet it'll help a little but if it still isn't enuff, i'll then look for another pump. those piping changes will be good changes anyway! thanx joe.
-
hi all, thanx for all the input. the most i can chop is 2 elbows. how much can i improve? the prob is that there's a huge difference when the output is raised an additional 2-3 inches after 5 ft. i agree it's a good pump but probably best when below that threshold i guess. *sigh* keep those suggestions coming in please.
