Greetings my brothers of the sea! I have a problem. My holding tank cracked and I need to get rid of a few hundred fish.
-
They're about 5cm to 10cm standard length(not including tail). Certified parasite free by our vet. All individuals are siblings.

I have an 18,000 litre/hour atman
-
This one is 4,700,000 litres actually. So 1,175,000 litres is reserved for the sump, which means seagrasses, macroalgae and planktivorous animals of all sorts, including some corals a few years after it's started. We're also working with conservation groups like Nature Society Singapore to see if we can act as a repository for endangered marine organisms. I'd also like to extend the offer to MASS, if you guys have anything that needs nice stable home, drop me a message! The rest is for commercial seafood production.

I'm gonna need more than a grass cutter for this... http://s9.photobucket.com/user/xnsdvd/media/IMG_2954.jpg.html'> So we quickly got to work removing the vegetation, snakes, insects, frogs, abandoned luohan... http://s9.photobucket.com/user/xnsdvd/media/IMG_2953.jpg.html'> Then the little excavator was brought in to tear everything up http://s9.photobucket.com/user/xnsdvd/media/IMG_0430.jpg.html'> Now all we need to do is drain the ponds... http://s9.photobucket.com/user/xnsdvd/media/IMG_0432.jpg.html'>

I'd rather you bring the chicken or beef, we'll have all the seafood swimming around in the tank

Best part of the whole thing was my wife. She said, "Aww... Can we just sue them and try again at lim chu kang?"

So here's the good news I promised: And this one is being built in the west side! Drop by Neo Tiew Lane 1 for a snorkel in a few months guys!

Hey Guys! You have no idea how heartwarming it is to read all your posts. But unfortunately, the pond had to be demolished and filled in. So I guess I owe you all a story about what happened at 35 Jalan Kuang and a little bit of good news at the end of it. What Happened?! Like Gouldian said, one of my neighbours complained. The government got involved, the landlord got scared and I got caught in the middle of the whole mess. But it's the details that make this story so unbelievably stupid; Neighbours You see, the neighbour on my right, that you can see in the photos, wasn't the one the complained. It wasn't the neighbour across the road or the one directly behind me. It wasn't even the one on my left. They were all fish people themselves and were quite excited about the pond. They'd drop by to sit around and chat about what was going in, how I'd handle the filtration and when they could go snorkeling or spearfishing. So no, it definitely wasn't those fine people or their lovely families. It was the !@#$%^ing &^#@ one house down on my left. The guy that couldn't even see the pond from the 3rd floor of his house. And this wasn't the first time he'd done something like that. A year ago he actually demanded my pregnant wife cut the grass in my garden. And he called the police because we had a barbecue and he didn't like the smoke. Basically a crazy person. But it gets worse... Government I thought I was quite safe, seeing as how I'd cleared construction with the landlord, the property agent and URA. I documented almost everything as well in case something like this should happen. Unfortunately, the good people at URA decided to send some mental hospital escapee, lets call him "Low", to inspect my pond. I quickly gave him a copy of the correspondence and a printout of URA's own website that proved I didn't require approval to construct a pond. I also explained that BCA had come down the week before and confirmed that I wasn't doing anything illegal. He took the documents and said, "Yah... but this kind of thing is verbal only, you never got written permission. And how I know this email is real? Anyway your pond is too big!" Fighting the urge to slap him with a lionfish(poor fish might get hurt), I pointed out the email where the approving officer commented that the pond was "Rather big" and I asked her to clarify what "Rather big" was, because I was quite happy to make it "Rather normal" but she eventually said it was ok and we could proceed. Low just stared blankly at me, perhaps remembering it was lunch time back in woodbridge, and repeated, "Yah.. but how I know it's real? Anyway it's too big! It's almost commercial!" I desperately told myself that stabbing him with rabbit fish wouldn't be fair to the fish and calmly said, "I don't think you understand the meaning of that word... can't you just call your approving officer and get her to confirm?" That's when Low(I'm starting to think it describes his IQ), told me she was on leave and there was no way to verify until she got back 2 weeks later. This is when things get REALLY crazy. The Landlord My landlord, after receiving a URA letter about an illegal commercial operation in his garden, came to the conclusion that all the correspondence between himself, URA and me were fake! Fake! Because, as he explained, "If real one den how come the gobermen come after me? Singapo gobermen not so stupid one! I don care! You fill up the pond and make good my garden!". At this point I wanted to swallow a blue ring octopus, but it wouldn't have been fair to the little cephalopod. So anyway, in the end, URA said it was legal to have the pond, my dogs left the neighbour some presents, but the landlord decided I was too much trouble and almost doubled my rent since we were in the middle of renewing the contract during the whole fiasco. So having no choice, I had to demolish the pond, fill it up and move out. I was quite lucky that my HDB was finally ready during that period as well. The End.

I already invited everyone, just search "OnHand Agrarian" on facebook I'll announce dates and times when I'm free. And check out the videos on the page, you get to see the trawlers I get bycatch from.

Mother nature telling me that I should fill the pond faster... Anyway, on to questions; Why did the wall break? - Actually this one was down to human error. The wall is supposed to retain the backfilled concrete, not support the weight of the water, so when we were filling it up, it should only have been done 2ft at a time. Unfortunately whoever was overseeing it had horrible depth perception and poured 3.5ft of wet concrete at once and broke the wall. Double layer brick wall with cement in between? - Actually that's pretty much what we're doing here except it's just 1 layer of bricks set 1ft away from the earthen wall, then backfilled with concrete. For the above ground section of the wall, it'll be exactly as you suggest. Neighbour how? - That's a big concern and we addressed it by compacting the earth under the pond prior to adding 10cm of hardcore. Then compacted it again with a pneumatic rammer. It's quite impossible to move at this point.

You don't have to be super rich, I'm certainly not. Just get into the mass affluent or emerging affluent demographics and you're already richer than me.
-
Trust me, I really really want to but I'm not sure how to justify this cost to my shareholders, after all, this is a company project. I'm 40% convinced I can get away with it... though it seems easier to just build a reverse periscope and hang it over the sides, then I can move it around as well.
-
The acrylic's for the skimmer! lol! But yes the pond wall is going to be extended 1m above ground as well. There's a few reasons for it; 1) To prevent my 6 month old from accidentally falling in. 2) An extra meter of wall gives me 40% more volume. 3) Deeper pond = lower temperature

I'm quite happy with the quality of the work we did.. I know it's butt ugly and uneven, but hey! they fish don't care! I'll upload more photos when I can, for now, here's a shot from the balcony!
-
10cm thick wall snapped like a @#$%ing biscuit. Fortunately it'll be cheap to fix =) so it's just a 1 day setback.
-
@#$%!! One of the walls just broke while I was backfilling! Pictures of the disaster to come! Reefer guy: - The walls aren't fully built yet. So they've got about 1.6m to go. We'll finish that part after we've finished work on the floor. Or else there's no way to get equipment into the pond. - As for the lack of a roof.. same problem, I can't get my heavy machinery in with the roof in the way, and I need a way to cure the pond first, so letting the monsoon rains do the work for me is really the best thing. - FOWLR with seagrass to start, but once it's more stable I'll start throwing in the giant clams and corals. No worthwhile experience with corals though.
-
In case anyone was confused by the scale of the pond... I'm 1.8m tall by the way.

You can try Mainland Tropical Fish Farm.

Heh heh, I love how we're all on the same page. I'm actually going to be installing PV panels, batteries and an inverter over the next year all off-grid so I don't have to get permission from PUB.

I'll attempt to answer the questions so far: Rain Water Acidity Definitely a big concern. But I'll be dumping a few tons of fine aragonite sand as well as allowing a 12.8m3 artificial live rock wall to cure in the water. Should settle the pH. And even if it doesn't the fish, coral, invertibrates and plants I'm throwing in are all intertidal organisms so they can handle the fluctuations with little problem. Pond Liners Aside from not being able to find a supplier, I just prefer using epoxy. In this case I have 70 litres of Jotun's "Penguard HB" excellent, fish safe product. And I got it in white to help reduce the IR absorbtion. This will also take care of the minerals leeching out of the concrete. Filtration I actually built a 12,000 litre prototype that I've been running for about 2 years now. Haven't had a single water change in all that time because of the 4000 litre sump that's full of Caulerpa and seagrass and mangrove trees. But I do have to add Mg, Ca, K, Fe, etc on a regular basis to keep everything healthy. Even with 2000+ fish averaging 200g each, my nitrates are holding steady at 12ppm and ammonia at 0.25ppm. Nowhere near as clean as the average reef tank of course, but I'll be implementing improvements on the 200,000 litre tank. Skimmer This'll actually be a DIY project all on it's own. Fortunately I have a friend that wholesales acrylic. If anyone wants his contact, let me know. Not sure if I'm allowed to advertise for him Top Up Got a 2000 litre storage tank for rainwater collection. I doubt it'll be enough, but we'll just have to wait and see. Roof This will come up AFTER the pond is built. I actually had to sacrifice my BBQ pit for the pond, so I'll be building a trellis strong enough to support a party and BBQ on top of the pond. That way if anyone falls through, the sharks will get rid of the evidence...

That's true, NSW costs about $1.80/litre whereas ours costs about $2.10/litre. But the salinity of NSW tends to be in the 17ppt to 27ppt range so in terms of salt content, the price is almost the same. Then there's the problem of heavy metals like lead and cadmium that can be found in minute amounts(parts per billion) in NSW because of the shipyards in the area Then there's the strange copper/hyposalinity resistant strains of ICH and Velvet you get from the straits of Johor that you have to kill before you can safely use the water. And the logistic nightmare of the truck being able to only move 5000 litres per trip. This 200,000 litre pond would take a minimum of 80 trips back and forth between the beach and my house, I ran the numbers and it would've taken 8 days to fill it. Much easier to just dump 7 tons of salt and let the rain do the work for you, it's monsoon season and the pond's already filled up half way from just 2 days of rain. I can fill the entire pond in just a day if I direct the rainfall off my roof. Parasite and heavy metal free too. As for people who want to visit, you're all welcome! Watch for details on my company's facebook page; http://www.facebook....267990176567810 Joseph! I called you for Kopi last month and you said you weren't free! Bring your kids over for a swim this time!

Damn! The workmanship is excellent! Call me if you're ever looking to become a full-time tank builder!

Just my luck, we're heading into the monsoon season as I'm trying to pour the concrete floor... If anyone's wondering, the pond will be about 2.2m deep with 10 Tsurumi 50 TM 2.45(S)s moving 200,000 litres of water through 12.8m3 of crushed coral every hour for filtration. I know it's far too slow for most aquariums, but those 10 pumps will be drawing 4kWh. Which comes up to about $1/hr I just ordered the 7 tons of salt required to bring the salinity to 35ppt. Again, it was quite cheap considering the amount. Less than $5000 for transport and customs clearance. Some of the fish are already here in quarantine. The first batch will be going to the vet for a skin scrape and gill biopsy next week to see if they're parasite free. Here's a photo:
