Hey bro, u got a H&S... and I don't think it's a poor man's equipment for sure... I always believe in the best equipment I can afford... as the saying goes "if wanna do, do it properly". A set of Salifert test kits can easily costs you $250.00. Some other brands cheaper but less reliable (according to some). So it's up to you... but yes, you must know ur water condition before you start adding lifestock... or else you will spend much more replacing your lifestock all the time.

Sorry no tang and angel for your tank size... lol. U see those tiny BT at LFS... they are extremely hard to keep coz they are still too young... I heard. I bought a small BT too for my 24g, feels quite tight... not much room for it to swim... think properly ok? Not cheap also.

Personally I think both LR and Biohome does the same thing... to provide housing for bacterias... but if ur compartment is small, then u will have a lot of wasted space coz it's impossible to find LR that fits like a jigsaw puzzle. But Biohome can fill up the entire compartment without space wastage, so u can end up having more HDB blocks instead of some landed houses. As for Purigen and Rowa, better check with other bros coz I have no experience with the products.

As suggested by bro Colin earlier... if u do not intend to spend so much money, then some small pieces of live rocks can also do the job. I reckon 1 pack of Biohome is sufficient for ur 2nd compartment, so $37... ka ching. But if u intend to put stocking bags on top of live rocks... then be careful as the bags tend to get torn off by the sharp edges... then u will have lots of cleaning up to do If budget is a concern, just get normal Activated Carbon for marine aquarium. Since u need to change them quite regularly... ka ching... ka ching... ka ching... I will also invest in a in-tank termometer. Here's what I've been using... cost me $10 by JBJ, bought it from PR. It's scary not to know the exact temperature of your water as it is one of the most important parameters in fish keeping.
