what to add or put into the sump tank ?
jervismun replied to chercm's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Firstly, how big is ur sump? If not big, then having a refugium is optional. One thing I notice about refugium is... u need a lot of them to be able to make a difference to the system. If only a bit... might as well use up that space for a Nitrate Removal Reactor. But if you have a large compartment (can fit roughly 3 to 4 handful of Chaetos) then it's a beneficial step. The Chaetos can also let u breed pods and most importantly, control ur tank pH esp. at night. Reverse the refugium lighting (opposite that of ur main tank) and u will be able to avoid the night water being too acidic. The essentials are (IMO): 1. Return pump (a good, reputable, quiet, reliable, low power consumption) as it is the heart of the whole system 2. Protein skimmer (the best u can possibly afford, look for overpower skimmers) 3. Activated carbon 4. Nitrate control 5. Phosphar control 6. Extra surfaces for bacteria growth (biohome, small pieces of LR, bactoballs, etc.) 7. Polyfilter -
You must plan ur budget prudently... $400 is not a lot for Saltwater. Yeah, try Pasar Malam section. It's better to buy reliable second hand products than some lousy first hand equipments. But be careful with the conditions though, always good to view items before committing... since u r still new here... it's hard to tell who's reliable and who's not. You can always PM any bro here for second opinion if u r not sure about items on sale/reefers selling the items. Another good way is to double check the normal retail price at Reefdepot.com.sg or eAquaNature.com(.sg?) Welcome to the hobby!!!

More than an atom bomb... but nuclear still more expensive... lol

Yes, the positioning of the clam is not very ideal (IMO). I think clams look best when position slightly upright with the larger "mouth" at the bottom. When I introduced my first clam, I position the big mouth on top "terbalik" luckily a bro spotted my pix. You notice the colours are not as nice looking through our tank glass? If you want damn "power" photo shoot, off the filters and shoot from above the tank

Toadstool is nice... make sure u have strong current blowing on its surface... if not they will release slime every 2 to 3 days... my Blue Sea Fan really hate those slimes... tangling on its branches for hours. Do you happen to have a small BT? Coz mine will hide inside the Toadstool just like an Anemone and a Clown... very funny. Blenny with Anthias tail... wow... probably a very fast swimmer... beware of jumpers

Jump out of the container without shell? Wow Oh I like ur stone lion... u got a pair? One thing... seems like ur cabinet cannot close properly... something's blocking?
