ya, you are right. the Instant Ocean hydrometer is quite good actually, after i checked it against the refractometer from RD. Given that the refractometer that i got from Reef Depot is accurate, the Instant Ocean hydrometer is spot-on. Initially i don't quite like it, a lot of bubbles. But with proper filling technique, it gives very consistent and spot-on reading as compared to the refractometer:-0 Glad to have one as spare, as you said. But the price is on the high side. I guess the actual price should be as you said, 20+. Taking the Boyu protein skimmer as a reference, this shop is selling at $32 as compared to $23 at other LFS. Not so nice to mention the name here. But as i said, the IO hydrometer is spot-on, to my surprise. Now i love it. it even has a better/easy-to-see resolution than the refractometer. I use to test/adjust my water processing tank daily.

do we need to re-calibrate it at our ambient temp. According to RD, only need to calibrate if it is dropped or due to other reason that might affect the default cal.

is it normal for this coral to retract its tentacles slightly during feeding. It was fully expanded before i introduce some cyclopeeze

thanks bro. Thinking of setting up a pico in my office. Problem is we are not allowed to on ac power after office hr. thinking of using this to provide flow in the pico after office hr. but how about wkends?

good idea bro. never thought of fishing shops. They have to keep their catch alive or live baits, ya?

any bro know where to get one of this?

another view of my tank. wondering what other corals should i add later.

thanks, bro. Is it easy to clean and maintain after use?

thanks, bro. Will get one from RD tomorrow. Really regret buying the IO hydrometer, damn expensive man. Next time must do more research before buying and most importantly must consult all the bros at this forum first. That is where all the experiences are. well, alr bought liao, bo pian. Maybe will use the refractometer to calibrate the IO hydrometer at least to make it usable with some confidence, for daily routine check for my water processing tub. Tried taking 10 readings just now. Seems very consistent with proper filling technique. Now is to check against the refractometer to see how accurate it is. Will use Refractometer to confirm tank sg weekly. btw, i read that for coral, the salinity should preferably be at 3.5% ? any advice from bros?

Ya man, just saw this available at reef depot, only $60. paid $34 for the IO hydrometer. damned! Is the refractometer at reef depot good? thanks for the advice, bro. Previously got phobia using one, that is why bought the hydrometer.

bought an Instant Ocean hydrometer today. Don't quite like it initially due to a lot of bubbles attaching to the pointer. after experimenting for a while manage to fill slowly but still with some small bubbles attached. measure 4 to 5 times, reading seems to be quite consistent. Is this more accurate then the dip type, which i was using. Reading with the Instant ocean is 1.028 while the dip type give 1.024

Setting up marine tank - need help.

I am also looking at the RSMD. Looks cool. IMHO, the de-lighting setup does not look as good, very messy. -
also got a coral-band shrimp that has not been fed for more than a month or 2 already. Seems healthy and morphed once or twice. Can i continue without feeding. The tank condition seems ok, the corals are growing, the anemone, shrimp and hermits seem ok too. Nitrates and phosphates level acceptable. No change of water for past 2mths or so. Water crystal clear.

mine seems to be moving towards the inlet of the HOT filter. any danger of being sucked in? My atman HOT filter comes with a built-in surface skimmer, hopefully this would relieve the suction pressure if the intake is blocked.

mine is quite small, about 3inches dia when open. Got it from coralfarm for about $6+.

thanks, Ian and bros for advice.

i hv a baby carpet anemone. has been there for about 2~3wks already and i hv not done any feeding yet. And i think it is doing fine, opening nicely. Can i continue this way, providing light and flow? or do i need to feed it with some shrimps or sotong? Very worried after reading all the anemone obituaries

some updates on my pico. Added a few corals, a shrimp and a hermit.

thanks, Ian.

hi, I am looking for a ultra small skimmer for my picos. how big is your piccolo skimmer?

would like to thank Nicholas again. Really appreciated your time in putting in all those annotations. Will adopt these concepts in my mod of my 2ft tank.

good to hear that solidworks is used by product designers too. I am a R&D Engineer occasionally need to design some mechanical components and some FEM analysis. Hv been using it since '96 purely for engineering but suddenly got this idea of using it to design my tanks. Looks good and the user-friendliness of the software make it very easy to make changes etc.
