i think joe_p selling...can try him!

thanks for the advice! Been thinking of starting a refugium too but sump not really designed for it...will probably just pile more LR in my sump to help in the bio filtration....besides, adding lights in my cabinet will heat up my water more..already having a fairly tough time maintaining water below 27 deg...running on fan with my MH

Hi, I've been thinking of increasing the live rocks in my tank but no space. Any idea if I can put them in my sump?? I've got no lights or whatsoever in my sump...in a cabinet, so will be in the dark most of the time...will they do fine???

hi, I agree that the main ingredient for good coralline growth is calcium. but I wouldn't rule out the prospect of trace elements affecting it's growth...i believe every form of nutrients, trace elements etc will have some form of effect on the corals, coralline growth, fishes etc..maybe there's just an over emphasis on calcium being the only factor that contitutes good coralline growth that we sometimes fail to see other things that might affect it as well (in addition to good water quality). Just speaking from experience because I did notice the sudden bloom in my coralline...

that's right...only on weekends and public holidays....

Hi, I've been using combi san for some time already. I understand that there are reefers out there who doesn't think much of this product and there are also claims that the main ingredient in this product is nothing but water. But from my experience, it really did help improve the coralline growth for sure. Coralline growing like crazy now until it is now a headache!!! by the way, I don't think u can use it to replace kalk and reef builder. i think combi san only replenishes trace elements...

yup, these are predatory corals and require constant feedings....not easy to keep. maybe u can try attaching it upside down under a cave or something because these corals are normally found in low lighting conditions, mounted upside down in the wild

RC latest tank of the month
Mellow replied to DeepBlue's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
yup, totally agree with deepblue, i think it's less of a competition but another gateway for us to learn... i don't think it is fair to the TOTM just by comparing on how the tank looks and passing remarks on how it is lousier than AT's tank because think the TOTM also considers factors like healthy coral growth, coloration, good water parameters etc...of course i agree that AT has got better aqua scaping and great looking corals... but i guess there's a whole lot more to reefing than just a nice looking tank...we should also consider that overall well being of the ls, good water quality etc...it's not a matter of how nice it'll look now but how nice and healthy a reef u can still maintain it in years to come... -

there aren't alot of clams there as compared to the earlier shipments..i should say about 10 left...maybe less -
totally agree with tanzy. most prob ionicall imbalanced.u can try changing water to see if the readings will change too in addition to trying out other test kits on your water

dkh = buffering capability of your ph...the higher the dkh, the less fluctuation of your ph...
-
i think u gotta first see the alkainity intake of the ls in your tank..coz for those with plenty of hard corals, the increase in alkalinity will significantly be lesser than that of those with mainly soft corals...so it's best if u can have a rough gauge of the dkh intake first. for example, assume 1 litre of saturated kalk solution raises alkalinity by 1dkh and your dkh intake of your tank is about 1dkh a day, then adding just 1 litre of saturated kalk solution will only help maintain the current dkh level..to increase it by 1dkh, u'll need 2 litres of kalk solution.... yah, kalk solution will help maintain both calcium and alkalinity in a balanced form as found in NSW... can check out this website to calculate stuffs...hope that helps http://www.kademani.com/reefchem.htm

it is ok to store kalk solutions...but prob not for too long like 3 days?? keeping kalk solution for too long will cause some chemical reaction with air(forgot the chemical reaction name) and make the kalk solution less effective in a sense. izzit precipitation??? can somebody help me fill up the reaction part?? haha... yup, that's the reason why it's not advisable to store kalk solution for too long... in additon to ph spike if u add the kalk solution all at once into the tank, u'll also cause some form of precipitation which will precipitate the (???..forget about that too. somebody please fill up the chemical reaction process)..in other words, no good lah. heh... but i've read some articles somewhere about the flushing method (prob came up by julian sprung) on how to add kalk solution directly to tank..can try to search for it.... hope that helps

Discussion: Alkalinity vs calcium
Mellow replied to Achilles Tang's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
i'm still trying to bring up my dkh to about 12...but my dkh seems to be sapped up by the coralline growth. curretnly around 9-10 dkh...by the way, i've heard alot from u guys that calcium gets depleted really fast by coralline growth but mine seems to be the other way round...the dkh goes down really fast as compared to my calcium level... been dripping 6tsp of reef builder for my 3 ft tank every 3 days just to maintain at 9-10dkh...in addition to my daily kalk additions... hey pospeh, that info was good!!! -
Discussion: Alkalinity vs calcium

i dun think we can point out just one factor that causes tissue recession. they are so many other factors that we should also consider, in addition to the basic factors like insufficient lighting at the base and low water movement. coral diseases, water paramters are just as important IMHO. i would prefer to look it as a whole package of factors instead of just ruling out one factor primarily causing it. i suppose everything little thing will have an effect on our prized sps though we may not see an immediate impact.... -
Discussion: Alkalinity vs calcium
Mellow replied to Achilles Tang's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
i think alkalinity has a greater impact on my tank...as said earlier, it has an impact on the ph if the alkalinity is too low...as for calcium, i think as long as it is above 400, i think it doesn't really matter as much whether is is 400 or 450. whereas for dkh, a high dkh of about 12 would certainly help lessen ph fluctuations while maintaining anything at 8 or below is not as good...i've read somewhere where there are people who actually have dkh at 14-15..other views? -
Is my Protein Skimmer sufficient for my tank
Mellow replied to odi's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
what's the skimmer rating??? try to go for a skimmer with a rating of at least twice of your tank volume. for example, if ur's a 50 gallon tank, get a skimmer with rating of 100 gallons and above...hope that helps...as said earlier, no harm getting a much better skimmer if u can afford it...u can never overskim -
looks like galaxia to me...

yah...i've seen butterfly fishes at the palawan lagoon too...quite alot if u ask me...seen panther fishes too...i always go swimming under the wooden bridge... go check out the underneath man...lotsa tube worms and i've seen one or two huge cauliflower before too..pretty amazed...and alot of brown buttons too...

hey joe, how high are your lights away from water surface??? some of the colours of your acros are real good...u had the acros for long???
-
how big's the worm? I suppose the worms are part and parcel of the live sand. Don't see any problems with them unless they are flat worms or something like that...i've got tonnes of small little worms all over in my sand bed....
-
got myself a frag too..i must say this zoos are pretty unique.... the colours are really nice and purple!!! loving it..... got myself the orange rimmed ones shown in the background..equally nice!!!
