If you look close enough, i believe you'll be able to see fangs on it, saw a similar worm chasing a fish out of its cave! remove or "sump it"

anyway at the risk of sounding like I'm exaggerating. My tank have been skimmerless ever since it started. 2 years old, no skimmer, no water change (at all). Keeping SPS, Soft corals, BTAs and livestocks. so far no casualties yet. using UAS..

my experience with skunk shrimp is that it gets bold after a while...in fact too bold that it steps all over corals, live stocks when it is trying to get to food.

works like a charm for me...coming to 2 years tank.

personally, the idea of a reef tank is to create something which is as natural as possible. And for that sand is necessary, really up to personal preference
