This is the set i bought from a wet market tropical fish shop at $24. Quite strong and not noisy, at least for the past 3 mths. It comes with a metal clip so that you can clip on yr tank edge.

Always excited to learn from other fellow reefers how they deal with this most irritating parasites that spoilt our mood in reefing. Read somewhere that ich parasites need to go thru a cycle. The parasitic stage (trophonts) is the one that results in the appearance of white spots all over the fish. The trophonts burrow under the skin where they feed on body fluids and tissue debris. When the trophonts first infect the fish they are small but grow as they feed and so the white spots are initially small but get larger as they mature. Once mature, they drop off the fish and sink/swim down to the substrate where they encyst and begin to reproduce. In this stage they are called tomonts. After a number of days in which the tomonts divide, the cyst ruptures, releasing the tomites. Tomites may differentiate into theronts, the infective stage, which actively seek a host to reinfect. Hence, if we can break the cycle by not providing a substrate for it to reproduce after it drops off from the host fish (tomonts) during the encyst stage in the quarantine tank, then therotically the parasites shd die off without the need for medication or hypo. i wonder if this works... But maybe this parasite is not that easy to dealt with after all and hypo seemed to be the preferred method to rid the parasites by most reefers if quarantine fishes before releasing into main tank is not an option... Just some thoughts to share...

Seen the tank last weekend. Huge tank, est abt 6-7 ft (L) by 3-4 ft (H) by 1ft (W)...still wondering how they do the landscaping and maintenance though... But many corals not doing very well and tank temp quite warm leh...maybe 'cos of heat emitted from plasmas with no chiller?? (guessing only..) Saw many large and small angels, golden travelly, anthias, a few tangs, cardinals, blue/yellow damsels...one blueface angel was nipping at the zoos...some fishes looked quite sick also... But definitely attracted alot of shoppers looking at it...

Hmm, since they're hardy fishes after reading from the website, l may try to look out for it too. Though they may be expensive, but i think worth it lah as a good substitute for cleaner wrasse.
-
Bro Jervis l dun think cleaner wrasse is a MUST to have in order to keep tank fishes healthy lah. The key issue here is abt whether it is a necessity to have a cleaner wrasse. There are many other means to keep fishes healthy mah. Hence, your comparison with usage of lab mice for human good is not appropriate at all. A life is still a life, as it may not directly related to you, so you may not feel it...of course, we can't escape in this hobby from being guilty of taking something out of the reef in one way or another, the least we cld do is to prevent future mistakes. l made many mistakes too and guilty of some fish "murder", but i learnt to avoid future doings. Hope you have no hard feelings, just sharing my 2cts.

WTS Aqua Medic Denitrator 1000
Underwater replied to Underwater's topic in Sell off/Pasar Malam Shop
Thank you bro lyz77 to upz the sale for me, very nice of you. NR1000 sold. Thread close. Thanks to those who PM me. -
Wow, sounds bad. But don't give up, bro. Temp of 32 is pretty high. Maybe you can see where you place yr tank, is it well ventilated or is it against/near a wall tt's hit by afternoon sun? The ambient temp can be quite high at tt period. A fan will likely not be effective if the ambient temp is high also. Like what bro Qxnviolent said, the number of internal pumps also play a part. My tank temp increases to 29plus now after adding a cheapo internal pump. Let me know if you need another tank and filter pump for yr fishes. l can lend it to you FOC. All the best.

WTS Aqua Medic Denitrator 1000
Underwater replied to Underwater's topic in Sell off/Pasar Malam Shop
Have received a few requests if the price can be lowered. Ok, final price $600 and won't be selling below that as this is really a great set. In fact, i won't be selling if there wasn't a change in family circumstances. Upzz. -
Hi bros Pls PM me w hp no. if you're sincere on this set. No pilot pls hor. One mth old AquaMedic Denitrator NR1000 to let go at $630 (RP at $725). Warranty will be transferred to you. Comes with AM Dosing Pump SP3000, bactoballs and denimar powder (used once only). l will also throw in free additional 20-30 AM deniballs which will cost over abt $60-$80. Some info on this: "The Nitratreductor 1000 is an anaerobic biological reactor for removing nitrates from marine and freshwater aquaria. It has a large volume of 10 l (c. 4.5 gals) and an internal circulation pump. The Nitratereductor 1000 works with a flow rate of 1 to 4 l/hr (c. 0.25 to 1 gph). In the absence of oxygen this situation promotes bacteria that metabolize nitrate. Denimar powder or Deniballs are used as an organic energy source. The Nitratereductor 1000 is a closed unit that can be integrated into filter systems, but may also be installed to stand alone under the aquarium. For aquarium up to 1000 litres (250 gallons)"

Can running external pumps reduce heat?
Underwater replied to jervismun's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
For me, before i add in a cheapo internal pump to run my FR w Rowas, it was 28plus. Now, it rises to 29plus. With that, l do somehow believe that tt internal pump does contribute to the rise in tank temp. IMO, the only consideration for external pump is to ensure tt extra care is taken to ensure all connections are tight and secured so that there won't be any leakage or sudden rubber tubes dropped off during the day, esp when no one is at home. -
Seen it myself too. A nice & healthy fish. Upz for you.

AMAZING RESULTS....From 31c to 28.2c ...........or maybe i'm just "Sua Ku" (mountain tortise) After the advices from bros here, i went to buy an aquarium fan from a wet market lfs for my 5ft tank. It's made from Taiwan, brand Sunon, $24, looks like computer CPU fan but with clips, very quiet and fan speed quite strong. Now, my leather and bubble look better. Fishes shd be happier now. Now, just hope that this fan can last... But water evaporation rate is much faster, at least double. But i avoided warm air and higher electrical bills from using a chiller.
-
can someone share yr experience using fan to cool down yr tank? my tank has been at abt 31c and dun think the LS are too happy to me though Not sure why also.. i know chiller is the best but not an option for me at the moment. Are those 5-in-1 type good? Or another other better ways to cool it down?
-
Dear reefers, l'm reducing the bioload in my tank and wish to give away 4 healthy chromis and 1 blue/yellow-tail (dunno name) damsel to a good home. Need to take all 5 as i need to clear my holding tank. Tks.
-
To bros out there... l'm new to this hobby and now in the process of cycling my tank. Understand the potential danger ICH can cause to LS, can anyone share yr personal preference/experience on using a UV or ozoniser to reduce Ich & other bacterial/parasitic problems? Heard tt ozoniser is a better option but it also gives out little harmful ozone gases into our environment. For UV, it kills both good & bad bacterias. Sigh... for yr comments, pls

anthias - is it that difficult to keep ??
Underwater replied to sixline's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
of course these LFS know if fishes are caught w using cyanide, just a matter whether they wanna import them in from those distributors. They are in this trade, dun think they're blur...of course the ethical ones will not : ) -
How long does it take to make a custom tank?
Underwater replied to cyberpig's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Anyone has contacts for a tank cabinet maker? Need to change 3 cabinet doors for my tank cabinet ? thanks.. -
anthias - is it that difficult to keep ??
Underwater replied to sixline's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
As a newbie, l was advised by bros to buy only from reputatable LFS - those that accum./QT the fishes properly...and avoid those unethical LFS tt import fishes caught using cyanide.
