If it's really that urgent, place the LR flat on the tank floor bed or remove the LR to catch out the fish.

Can't agree more with bro solo about electric blue hermit eating coraline algae. Mine did so, and even cleared up my GSP. I would not trust sally foot crab, cute when small, but mine was a terror when it got bigger.

l like this new logo and its tagline. Neat and clean look. Maybe can consider adding another smaller clownfish to form a pair since clownfishes often go in pairs?

Mega Powerful Nitrate and Phosphate Remover - DIY!
Underwater replied to SantaMonica's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Apologies, I've typed too fast, just read that my earlier comments were not structured properly...quite confusing to read. Re-phrase: In the initial one week, the screen was mainly light brown algae, then thick brown algae and some parts were thick & slimy. Then nearer the end of 2nd week, after one freshwater spray, more and more green algae starts to appear on the screen. But l do have some nuisance algae still appearing on my main tank. During those two weeks or since end Dec 09 when my tank was set up, no skimmer was used, no FR, no water change, same feeding with pellets and frozen food, new fishes were added, just water top up using tapwater (tapwater has 2ppm NO3). NO3 then was slightly higher than 50ppm based on color (using salifert). Today, the reading was 25ppm!! -

Some updates from my scrubber. After two weeks, this is how my double-layer screen looks like. Using 2 x 15w warm white energy saving lights, lighting period 16 hrs. In the initial one week, it was mainly light brown algae, then thick brown algae and some parts were thick & slimy. Then nearer the end of 2nd week, after one freshwater spray, more and more green algae starts to appear on the screen. NO3 was slightly higher than 50ppm based on color (using salifert). Today, the reading was 25ppm! However, l do have some nuisance algae still appearing on my main tank. During these two weeks or since end Dec 09 when my tank was set up, no skimmer was used, no FR, no water change, same feeding with pellets and frozen food, new fishes were added, just water top up using tapwater (tapwater has 2ppm NO3). Hope to hit lower than 25 ppm! -

Help required for New Setup
Underwater replied to apple123's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
i would recommend a chiller if you want to keep corals. Still, better to read/research more first before committing cos from your questions and lifestock list, l think you have barely read enough to plunge into this hobby. -
it is trying to find its food source from the water surface area.

Considering you are probably spending a bit for corals and fishes, for CF, maybe take a cab to and fro from home, or Kranji or other nearby MRT stations lor.

Very high chances tt yr sixline will harass/attack the fairy wrasse, even those bigger size than itself. Sixline is one of those very aggressive wrasses, though they look cute and colourful.

l stay at Hougang Central. The shop is directly opposite the 24-hr NTUC Fairprice, selling those cheap DIY, electrical and household stuff. Should be able to find such shops in most neighbourhoods. Screens can be found in most big knitting shops like mentioned in earlier postings. -
Anyone use some sort of moonlight LED?
Underwater replied to Ketchup's topic in General Reefkeeping_
l love the effects of the moonlight after the main lights are off. Very therapeutic to watch. Also, fishes won't get so freak out when the mainlights are suddenly off. -
please read this first if you are a newbie

l like that..."Some mistakes cannot be undone. Livestock cannot be reincarnated or be resusitated." Lives are precious, even though some may be as affordable as $1 per fish. Once, l was so tempted and nearly bought a sabae anemone after the LFS told me very easy to keep and can last many years. Decided to go back to check in the internet and found out that most species are dyed, cannot live long in captivity and needs strong light and flow. Glad l did not buy that anemone on impulse or else that poor thing would most likely perished in my tank. Advices from reefers in this forum can sometimes be are far more accurate than those from the LFS in my opinion. -
If your spotted mandarin is doing well in yr tank, l would not add another to compete food with it. In the end, you prob lose both as mandarins are not easy to keep. Unless your current spotted is feeding frozen food very well and not many fishes are snatching its food. Some may have bought those already feeding on frozen food (worse if bought a pair) but once into their community tanks with big fishes like tangs and angels, the mandarin starts to waste away as they are not as fast as the rest, and there are also not many pods for them to depend on.

Mega Powerful Nitrate and Phosphate Remover - DIY!
Underwater replied to SantaMonica's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Hi bro Bobiegoh, the scrubber pipe can be disconnected easily via the union which i only joint to the main return pipe just tight enough that no water leaks out. Just need to hold on tight to the main return pipe while loosening the union. Thanks for the caution, will be careful on that part. Currently using cable ties to hold on the screens to the scrubber pipe. I may change the 2 cable ties to plastic curtain rings later so that l can take out the screen easily without the need to detach the whole scrubber pipe from the main return pipe. -

Yes, these 2 plastic screens were bought at People's Park Centre as mentioned in earlier posting. Another bro said that it can also be found at Ang Mo Kio Central, near S11. -
Mega Powerful Nitrate and Phosphate Remover - DIY!
Underwater replied to SantaMonica's topic in General Reefkeeping_
I used my return down pipe to direct water to the scrubber instead of a separate pump. Using cable tie to secure the long pipe from the cabinet ceiling. Bought 2 cheap $12 clip-on study lights from a neighbourhood shop, one of those shops that sell lots of cheap electrical/household products. Using 15W energy saving warm white bulbs. Also recycled some old acrylic sheets to shield front and back for minor water splashes, in case water splashes into the lightset. Rapid water flow as compared to my previous horizontal screen. So far, there were some patches of brown algae growing after 3 days. -

Sharing here my new scrubber set-up for my new tank. After unsuccessful search for a dremel, I was so glad that my dad-in-law actually have this in his storeroom...a metal grinder! It works great and very easy to cut the slot on the pipe. Using the bottom of a pair of scissors and even a long screw driver thread to rough up the screen by dragging along the screen. The surface was very rough after that. But avoid using the inner cutting edge of the scissors to prevent cutting the screen. -

For such results, this is definitely one good method. Hope l am able to get such results from my new scrubber too. Thanks for sharing yr experience, bro. -
Haha, sure, reserved for bro solo.

To join other reefers in the spirit of giving, l have 5 stalks of mangroves to be given away FOC. Have grown well under 14w energy saving light. Collection at Hougang Central. Pls PM if keen.

Personally, l think kole tang is nicer if compared to an adult chervon. Like that yellow ring around the eye.

The beautiful and hardy tangs for the reef tank
Underwater replied to Melvyn Tan's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Surprised to see high votes for archilles tang and powder blue tang since the poll is also on hardiest and easy to keep tangs. Hope it doesn't mislead new reefers as both these 2 tangs are not easy to keep compare to the rest, though no doubts they are very beautiful and gorgeous.
