420mm still alright but i don't think it would be a good idea to go beyond 600mm. Deeper tanks means less light penetration and the 150W MH may not be sufficient anymore depending on the types of corals you are going to keep.

Maybe i should try using distilled water to do the top-up to bring the algae growth even more under control, though its somewhat quite slow as compared to previously when i returned from overseas.
-
I use normal tap water when doing water top-up. I think the water and food are the two main sources of nutrients for the algae growth. Maybe i should follow you and try using distilled water instead to reduce the amount of nutrients entering the water. What brand of distilled water you use? The problem got quite serious when i went overseas and the fishes were overfed. When i came back, the amount of algae was noticed to be much more as compared to before i left. Now, as compared to that period of time, the algae growth is less dense already but still enough to be an eyesore.

I don't mind you sharing the review but IMO, i felt that it was just some basic courtesy to at least leave a note saying that it is quoted from elsewhere instead of just copying wholesale and making it seem as though its your own text. Just like if i were to use someone else's article and copy wholesale, i'll leave a link or note behind so others know its not my own work. Apologies if i've made myself sound a little aggressive with regards to this. Just a sidenote here, although its good that your sharing what you know or come across with others here but do be careful when copying stuff from other sites. Other authors may have a copyright on their work and would not take it lightly when others copy their work wholesale and share it without any quotation. So to some, especially those who have a copyright, it can matter who did the article.

I'm using the Eheim 1262 pump.

Thanks. Anyway, forgot to mention i've got a pair of camel shrimps in there but they never show up when there's light so i've not had a chance to take a pic of them yet. I only get to see them when i peep at the tank at night after lights out with a torchlight. They only appear at night when both the tank lights and living room lights are out.

Here's mine, just re-setup not too long ago earlier this year after my old 4ft tank sprung a leak. Re-used all the old rocks from my previous 4ft tank. Still quite empty and nothing much compared to what you guys have here. Will continue stocking after exams, now too busy to go shopping for fish. At the moment, here's the stocking: x1 Longnose hawkfish x1 Magnificent Foxface Full tank shot: Magnificent Foxface: Longnose Hawkfish:

valerossi: No offence, but isn't what you typed about the redsea skimmer exactly what i've typed as a review on the Redsea skimmer on another site? You may use the pictures or article but at least have the courtesy to mention that it is quoted from another website if you intend to copy. Anyway, just to add on about the Redsea Skimmer, having used it for sometime now, another problem encountered is the O-ring coming lose. Meaning, the collection cup does not sit firmly onto the skimmer body. However, so far this doesn't pose as a major problem as i've not had water spill out of the skimmer before. By the way, nice tank you got there wil_lee76. Looks better than my nano which is overgrown with nuisance algae at the moment.

Sounds to me that you have dinoflagalletes rather than a diatom problem since you mentioned they appear only when the light is on. Controlling the nutrient level in the tank should do the trick in bringing this infestation under control. Mainly bring down nitrate, phosphates and silicates. Some ways would be: - Avoid overfeeding - Top-up with RO/DI water instead of tapwater - Do regular water changes using RO/DI water ideally - Use chemical media to remove phosphates/silicates chemically, if possible use it in a fluidized reactor for best results

Mine lasted for less than a year... Not going to keep them anymore, they just seem to waste away slowly over the months.

Yup. It did help. Thanks. Did a test according to the new instructions and i managed to get the results. Here's an online video which i found showing the steps: http://podcast.talkingreef.com/video/SalifertCa-TR-Ep68.m4v It further confirms that the new instructions were right.

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to post this as I felt this was the best place to post. Wonder if anyone encountered this problem, first of all the instructions appear wrong. It says to drip 6drops of CA-1 but CA-1 is a powder and to add 1 spoonful of CA-2 but CA-2 is a liquid. However, the big problem starts when I used CA-3. According to the instructions I am supposed to get pink-red but when i immediately mix CA-1 and CA-2 to the vial of tank water, I get blue immediately and after adding 1ml of CA-3 as per instructions, I still get blue. I have tried using the low resolution test and I have tried varying the order which CA-1 and CA-2 are added. One test was done as per instructions, 2nd test was done with CA-2 being added first then CA-1. All 3 tries resulted in the same problem. Testkit expired is unlikely as the expiry date is at July 2009. I suspect either something isn't being done right due to the wrong instructions or the reagants are contaminated somehow. May buy another testkit to confirm. A search on the internet didn't yield anything, all the instructions appear the same as what i get on the paper. I have tested my tank water parameters, using kH testkit(From Salifert) and pH using Eco pH pen. pH reads to 8.1(a little low) and kH is at 9.3. So from what i understand, there should be calcium in my tank as kH and calcium go hand in hand. Without calcium, the kH shouldn't be this high, but I could be wrong(kind of weak in water chemistry ). So any bros can confirm this? Instructions for the testkit: http://www.petstore.com/ps_ViewItem-...ct-SF1115.html Anyone encounter similar problem or can help?

It isn't a crack but water is seeping out from the silicone joint at the front left lower portion of the tank(when facing the tank), just a few cm off the bottom. The glass is fine with no cracks. Maybe let me elaborate a little on what tank_maker suggested, he suggested adding extra pieces of glass at the corners to reinforce the tank to repair the leak(estimated to cost $70-$80). Re-silicone the whole tank to repair the tank is an option but as with the reasons stated, i am planning to get a new setup instead. I don't know where is the water coming from inside the tank, i only know the outside leakage point.
