The beautiful and hardy tangs for the reef tank
taylapong replied to Melvyn Tan's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
yeah, i'd really like to know how to keep powder blue too! i've tried twice, and one almost wiped out my whole tank cos of ich... got one guy selling his PB tang on the forums who's kept it for 2 years!! Woah!! Maybe he can help -
Hehe... so what's the verdict? I'm agreeable to the idea that we should just stick to whatever works... but, what i'm unsure about is the mixed results of people who have tried BOTH methods... and they still have differing results!!

upz your sales!!

Hey!! great DIY!! how about adding more insulation tubing to the vertical part of the titanium coil? minimise energy loss merry Christmas!!

you could try to paste another laminate over the current one, if it's still secure... that's what i'm intending to do with mine probably sometime in january. If you want, we can go check out the laminates tog... it's my first time too, so i don't know if it'll work out. The other option, available to both of us, is to strip the laminate off, sand it down, get all glue off hte wood, and then dye it and varnish it

Actually, i don't think it looks ugly... it can have a nice, "outdoor" feel to it... my main concern with it is that it is not impact resistant..., while concrete bricks can withstand a big load, my fear is that if something knocks into it hard enough, it'll crumble... they can be quite brittle... just my 2 cents worth..., i doubt you'll ever accidentally hit it that hard anyway

as far as i know, wood stain works by being differentially absorbed by the grain in the wood...., if you stain a formica (ie. plastic) laminate, then i doubt you'll be able to get the effect you want... UNLESS, your laminate is actually veneer, which is an thin piece of wood.. that might work.. hope it helps... i'm not expert, but that's what i think

i personally think powder blue quite hard..., super susceptible to ich... -
Does anyone know if they're open on saturdays?

I'm thinking of DIYing a hood too... and i've got a few questions, hope you can answer! 1) How do i waterproof the wood? 2) Do you just put the wood together and screw/nail, or do you make mitre cuts and join them at an angle? 3) what do you put on the inside? Laminate also? Or just bare wood? 4) anyone tried wood glue? It can be quite strong right? THanks guys!

gift05: how much does he sell a jerry can for? back to the topic of nitrate reduction.... so, when our livestock isn't doing well, what's USUALLY the main cause? Nitrates? Or something else? Cos i kept a tank in the past, and am currently in the process of planning for another one... but even then, the fish didn't do well!! I can't be THAT lousy right? I mean, nitrates were at about 50ppm, so i suppose corals wouldn't do as well as they should, but even fish??!! Is nitrate the main cause? or was there something else? The only thing that lived were damsels Also, UNderstandably, if corals and fished look ok and survive, that's great... but, would the instead THRIVE in low nitrate situations? What's the verdict???

Thanks Chris The webbies i've read up on suggested i use "contact cement"... is that the same as elephant glue? Their suggestion was to apply a thin layer to both the laminate and the cupboard, then let it dry. Then, put them together... apparently, they'll bond on contact. is that how elephant glue works too?

Haha... what a funny title! but very informative... i'll go supermarts and look around... thanks!

Hey cityofangels THanks for the bioballs!

another question guys, if you don't mind Do you know where i can get laminate trimming knives? THe kind with a curved blade? I went online to check on laminate pasting etc.. they all suggested that i cut the laminate a little bigger, paste on, then trim later. but, the all suggest the use of a router, which i don't have. Some suggested using this special curved blade, so i was wondering if anywhere in singapore had it thanks guys!

Wah... UPS... sounds like a serious investment... just cheking, as long as there is water circulating in the tank, everything should be fine right? I mean, is it really THAT critical to get a UPS in the event the power goes out for a couple of hours? I mean... surely the corals and fish can survive for a couple of hours without light and circulation right? DOn't mean to jump to conclusions... i was just wondering... Ervine: Was it expensive to do all that? How come can remove the extension cords and multiplugs? Unless you got the electrician to install a whole bunch of new sockets into your wall too? hehe... Everyone: Perhaps you guys can post pics of how your electrical wiring's done up.. maybe that will be a good resource for future reefers... most wiring i've seen are in the member's forum... very hard to search (somemore some are REALLY REALLY long

shaohui- from what i know about kalkwasser, and it's not alot, only the kalwasser solution cannot be exposed to air because it will react with the CO2 in the air and precipitate calcium carbonate, which is useless in the aquarium. But, if you drip the solution INTO the aqurium, and it's already in solution, then it should be fine. THe main thing is not to leave the kalkwasser mixture in hte open, ie. stoe your mixed kalkwasser in an airtight container. Better yet, mix it every few days. the other option is to get a calcium reactor. word of caution on using kalkwasser: DRIP it into the tank. THis might be a little hard to calibrate, but if you don't, the extremely high pH levels of kalkwasser might wipe out your tank. Apparently, pH, KH and something else are all in some sort of balance with each other... gotta go read up more! For the experts: I wanted to ask, if kalkwasser is really just calcium hydroxide, would it be cheaper to just get that from chemical companies instead of paying more for branded kalkwasser out there? It's essentially hte same right? And where can i get it?

Hey guys!! thanks!! I'll be getting a tank with sump soon so it'll be the first time i hook everything up..., hope it goes well!!
-
wah but aren't UPS quite expensive?
-
Yeah, the old laminate is pretty much ok... i thought laminate would be better cos wood veneers would be prone to rotting etc etc... so i thought it would last longer... I'll go check out the shop at Geylang... my main fear is getting everything EXACTLY to fit... i used to do badly in art and craft... haha Thanks!!
