Sorry any pictures of the Venturi Skimmer? Thanks.
-
are your live rock (the tonga branches) glued/attached together else your fishes/hermit crabs will topple them when swim too close. then will fall on to the sides of the tank...ouch!
-
Sorry to hijack, the worm in the picture, is it very bad for your tank? I think I can get "stings" from these when I sometime move the live rock with bare hands??? Any fishes can eat up these worms, I seem to have loads of these in my live sand.

it should be salt water with all the muck. Some of the reefers got kopi-thick stuff while some gets Chinese tea so the liquid or foam should have salt content in them. That's why after a while we need to measure our S.g. of the water and do regular top up and and do a 10% water change to maintain s.g.

interested in your lighting - let me know your price.

Take out all electrical items. Ensure that the power plugs and the 3-pin or 2-pin socket are dry. (Many a times as salt has a natural attraction to water, mositure will gather near the salt spray). Then slowly plug in one by one of the electrical item. Use your finger then to "test" the water. after a while you will hate that "tingling feeling" and if you check well, you will realise which electrical item is "leaking" - now you can look at it properly. If the main pump is "leaking" you have no choice but to replace it. This was the way I trouble shooted it the last time round. at the end realise that it was the main return pump giving problems. Sometimes lighting also can cause such problems. Good Luck!

I think one of the most important parameter is the temperature. It is good to have a chiller to cool the water down else your anemone will be in problem very soon.

Actually clownfishes are a sub-species of damsel fishes - so all the clownfishes are ok - except that they tend to get territorial as they get bigger in size - so if you can introduce only 2 species at same time in a 2ft tank for example. If your water parameters are oky, dartfish/firegobies will make excellent fishes for beginners except that they are good jumpers - so you should cover the top of your tank to prevent sucide-jumping my two-cent worth

Interested at buying if you can sell to me at $40? thanks.

HA HA HA, I thought that if you want to keep lionfish, why not just throw in some smaller damsels. Then when later you regret the damsels and have difficulty catching them, juts buy some lionfish and they will have fun catching the damsels for dinner Sorry lah, just a wild suggestion. Actually better wait for another few weeks, then starting putting in livestock slowly (if possible allow 2-3 weeks between each load so that the fishes will get used to one another and the bioload will not suddenly go into overload.

it is okay brother, although it did sounded harsh. I am only keen and interested to keep a low-budget and low-effort tank and so far I have been very low-budget and low-effort on it. Of course I understand that those "showcase quality" tanks will never be in my house but I am happy with just a FOLWR and so all my fishes all fat-fat and eating well. So far in fact my sold my foxface away as it grows until 5" and now my 2nd replacement foxface is also fast approaching 4" and bule tank is 5" so I mat have to sell them away soon as they will be too big for my 2ft. But so far the joy of a low-budget low-maintainance tank is bringing joy to my family. Thanks for the comments though as it is a reminder that marine reef tank is an effort-taking hobby.

That's why it is on only from about 3 hours about from 6.00pm to about 9.00pm (time when I return and also feed the fishes) Otherwise in the day, the tank has got sunlight filtering from the balcony. Thanks.

wah friend, your HDB flat looks like a LFS already. Better not let the town council see as they may give you problems as all this weight adds up to a lot - I thought that HDB has a limit to the size of fish tank allowed in the house? Is there a restriction like have 4x4ft in your house?

Thanks, I understand the skimming part. What bothers me is the water changing routine. What is a reefer has a 4ft tank, and he only keeps FOWLR does he need to perform a 10% water change every weeks? That's a lot of water. Thus for my 2ft main tank I will try to do every 4-5 months a 10% water change. This schedule should be ok? Any comments on this?

Any expert, "old-bird", senior care to comment please, I want to learn and find out if I am doing the right way. This tank was started in Aug 2005 so on its way to 2nd year. The setup is a 2ft (main tank) and another 2ft below as a sump and Weipro 2014 only going about 3 hr a day (using timer) There is a DIY overflow joining the main tank to the sump and a return pump to pump the water back up. There is a Seio pump for water circulation. As the tank is near the balcony it gets a little of the morning sun and afternoon sun, thus don't require so much lights. So I only switch on the lights about 3 hours a day. In my opinion, I only do a water change about once/twice a year during the longer school holiday breaks. As my tank is a FOWLR (now with some mushrooms/leathers/tubeworms) else it is a simple tank. So far no problems with the tank. So in my opinion, I only top up with the tap water directly from tap - every 2 weeks about 4 litres. I don't dose the tank or add any additives. I will wash and clean the filters - the Weipro skimmer and the hangon filter. I have some macro algae growing - to export the wastes. Yes the sump is covered with a layer of stuff at the bottom, but generally don't bother me at all. My lifestock, a blue tang, a foxface, 2 Africa clown, 1 firefish, 2 bluish/green damsel, 1 fish from Tampines seaside, 2 pyjamas fish, lots of snails, 2 starfish in main tank. In sump have 2 tomato clowns with a cleaner shrimp. Lots and lots of live rocks in sump and in main tank. I used to have a canister but all these pumps greatly increase the heat generation as I do not have a chiller, so I remove as much as I can. Temperature of tank about 30 to 31 degrees. Don't even have time to check on the SG although have a floating hydrometer in the sump. But I feed the fishes daily once I return from home - so do a visual check only. Feeding with brine/mysis shrimps every other day, otherwise pellets - marine ones and fresh water type (trying to finish the bottle of it quickly) the fishes hungry so mostly will eat else the snails and starfish will finish them. Sometimes will feed the dried seaweed (buy from LFS) So far no huge tragedy all fishes very healthy.

sorry you did not say where you stay?

I noticed that you have three types of clownfishes inside you tank - maroon, clarki (the black and white) and the normal (orange/black) - so any problems with them living together? the last time I put the maroon and clarki together they fight rather badly.

mixing seawater with synthetic salt water
cdckjn replied to marine12's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
I guess that you can. It is just unusual, you may as well mix tap water with the salt to get your water. If you use sea water, you may not have to mix a lot of salt as the sea water may be already close to the S.G. required. -
Anemones requires a chiller for growth, in my humble opinion. They require about cool water.
-
sometimes they hiding under the rocks. known to hide up to three days - just continue feeding the rest of the fishes like normal, hopefully by then they will be hungry to come out and take food. Desperate case then try to move or rescape the rocks a little to try to chase them out.
