asg replied to asg's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
[emoji27] oki... then maybe their marketing strategy for this brand is to let it quietly quietly... anyway, how i wish more LFS actually display the lights they are selling on a live tank, i have such a hard time figuring how maspect r420r 10000k diff from 16000k on actual tanks... -
Fish? Equip? Lights? Advices on New 24l Nano Tanks

03/09/14 (Wednesday) As usual, a FTS to mark the date (double tail blue tang...) ==================================================== Ok, let's turn back the clock to 30 Aug 2014 when I was finally back from my two weeks business trip and this was how the tank looks like after zero maintenance done for two weeks. It turned up not as bad as I feared, loss a sea fan, a plate and some SPS frag but the bulk of LS are still OK. Tested the NO3 and PO4 at that point before I did some WC. To my surprise, both value are almost undetectable. So what causes the loss? A closer look at my tank and I think I know why, the tank water level has dropped below the skimmer suggested water level and I believe that the skimmer is not skimming optimally for at least the last few days (read: toilet breakdown). After doing some basic maintenance, my hand started to get itchy and I began to play around with a clip on mobile phone macro lens that I got from my business trip. Considering it costs less than $10, I am pretty happy with the effect. next was playing around with the ZETLIGHT ZT6500 that I also bought during the trip. I would say for that amount of $, I consider it a very very worthwhile purchase. Thought of doing a product review but then, there is no LFS selling it in SG so better save my energy... To sum things up, not being able to attend to the tank for two weeks was a very seven up eight down kind of experience, but I guess I am very much closing to finding out what are the thingys that I need to better prepare the tank for my next two weeks trip... which is pretty soon... lastly a FTV to end the update. And till I update again, happy reefing and may the ich be without you. (Video taken under ZT6500 mid-day setting, shall try different effects next round- thunder mode, cloud mode, sunset effect...) http://youtu.be/ON37Zn_l688 -

Bro, you seriously need to read more before adding anymore livestock. One more thing, dont blindly follow what LFS does, they can afford to change water everyday, they can change all 9 clown fish everyday, etc but we cant...

Too soon too fast too many fish. ..

I dont think so, skimming is a form of mechanical filter, the no2 no3 in the water has to be really super turbo high to impact the physical property of water... just my guess tho

I read somewhere, the very very general guideline is roughly one cm of fish for each gallon of water. Of cos the bio load for a five cm triggerfish is way higher than a five cm goby... -

11) wash your hand and arm before you put them into your fish tank (even for one second). -
Hi all, creating a post for all to share what one practices at home for good reefing. Newbie old bird all are welcome to add. Let me keep the fish rolling [emoji225] 1) keep a calender and write down every key thing that requires attention and replacement eg added 100g of AC on 13/08/14, wash wave maker on ddmmyy, etc. 2) keep all the manual of the equipment and re read them from time to time 3) buy a small digital scale to measure AC, Bio-sphere, etc 4) buy stock when your existing bottle is half left 5) always have a pail of aged replacement sea water ready 6) test your water at least once a week even if everything appears fine 7) know which LFS can be trusted and which is snake oil seller 8) label all your electrical plugs 9) next person please add... Is your skimmer at the recommended water level liao? Try putting ur skimmer at a diff compartment of your sump so that water entering your skimmer is not that fast/ slow? Possible to adjust your collection cup to higher so that the bubbles (water) has to travel higher and will lost its speed?
-
From a purely physic point of things, if water flows through too fast, the chiller just wont have enough time to chill the water down to it set temp i.e. chiller just have to work longer and harder loh
-
Bro, anyway to adjust the speed of air(bubbles)?
-
yo bro, for lighting wattage I go by the guidelines of: bright (LPS and maybe some SPS) = 3-5 watt per gallon and very bight is >5 watt (SPS), so i guess 68 watt for my 2*1*1 is about right. sad to say, i do not have a sump, so for the past two months since I have my 2ft tank, i am using a eheim canister as my main filter, supplement with two HOD small filters. other equipment I have are a hailea HS28 chiller, corallife 9W UV, tunze 9002 skimmer and two set of LED as mentioned (but I already bought a ZETLIGHT ZT6500 so shall be selling off the two set of LED soon). so far so good in my case.
-
Oki bro. I shall be back on this sun liao. No hurry tho.
-
mine is a two feet tank as well. I am using a green element evo 16*3 watt + a two ft blue pro z led (around 20 watt) abt $75. I would say that this combo serve my LPS pretty well. only thing i dont like is that the total of 68 watt might not be enough for SPS...
