not all fishes will be affected, the hardy ones can tolerate up to 500mg/l this is the level 50% fish mortality is recorded at in studies. All depends on what kind of fish u keep, some don't tolerate & will die at 50mg/l corals can tolerate up to 100mg/l but only for short periods*(before they close up & 'mati') & acros can only tolerate up to 10mg/l max best do a partial water change as everyone said, somethin dead would have raised the ammonia levels- which once cycled will end up as more nitrates , change first then look into the source of the problem. don't think of the Intepret tablets test kit, i just tried them & i find readings only accurate for FW, a little off for SW(even though it says for FW & marine).

Culturing live plankton & zooplankton
bawater replied to Achilles Tang's topic in General Reefkeeping_
it was easy to assemble, & with a PVC cutter($13)- even faster. My cost for the PVC was $8,2x 20watt shop lights $20+ 2x 5 outlet air valve $4 each & it took 15mins to put it together. No pics yet, i'm Still busy splitting cultures. -
i'll be there on the last day!!! as always. & those looking to upgrade to a 4ft- they sell whole setups on that day. $1200 should get u one. i'm afraid that half the hall will be filled with LH!!!! be afraid, be very afraid. even the koi show i went had no less than 6 stalls of LH. & i bet my money the main item will be the LH laser crap. eerr guys, is the RowaPhos rechargable? or izit like phosguard-BATA?Buy and throw away

what does snail shit look like? i dun see it. but i see snails shoot out milky substance every so often. this comes from the vent just next to the eyes- the vent looks like the outlet gill of a octopus. But i did see where the tang's poo went.....straight into the belly of the cleaner shrimp.

i've been using that method for marine water changes since i started. devil , u must watch that u don't lower the temp too much to fast & give your tank thermal shock> 1 pail of 8 gallon needs approx 4ltr of ice to cool temp to 24-25c in 30mins. i use ice cream tubs. If u use this temp water, the overall tank temp will drop 3c immediately(takes not more than 10mins)for a tank size 3ft & 4ft. my temp is 28c(lowest is 27c)- so my temp diff of 1c-2c every water change did not affect anything. i pump back the water by a small powerhead in the pail(less sweat)- takes over 20mins so temp drop is gradual. If u employ a fan, the tank should take abt 4hrs to bounce back to original temp, which id ok-considering your tank is outdoors. mine takes abt 7-8hrs min to go back up from 26c to 28c.(sometimes it stays at 27c througout the nite) it works for emergencies& very hot days but the whole point is to lower temp slowly to prevent side effects.

Tanzy's right wei, the bigger one is female & all the other smaller ones will be male(if u have more than 2 that is) blue terror, there are 3 ways of pairing clowns(but i only remember 2 of them). u can buy a group of 6 & let them naturally do their stuff, or u can force pair them by getting a big one & a smaller one(at the same time or at different times). the problem with the force method is that it may not work- they may not accept each other cause of territorial rights(usually common in the other species of clowns). Although i find that buying 2 fishes together at the same time from the LFS tank is fine. adding another later is asking for fin tearing quarrels. i have tried this with common clowns & skunk clowns. My previous tomato wouldn't accept any other clown in the same tank & stayed a batchelor. The pic u saw of hong's was a mushroom & the white coral skeleton.

*Ideal food for filter feeding inveterbrates, such as soft and stony corals, anemones, feather duster worms, clams, sponges and tunicates.* that's what they say on all the bottles of liquid foods. the dried phyto would be a better choice than the other liquid food stuff(made from yeast/pea flower/egg yolk etc)- but still non-living so got to watch feeding amounts & water quality. Once upon a time i fed marine liquidfry(upon recommendation of a LFS)& watched sponges die but sea squirts spread like the plague?didn't seem to benefit anemone, feather & coco worms either.- now i just keep lots of particulate in water column for the filter feeders. the phyto will not only benefit filter feeders but also the fauna(worms/copepods/amphipods & lots of creepy crawlies)in your tank,in turn they breed & larvae create more zooplankton. U will be able to see the increase of micro-life.

No AT, thought abt it, tried a very small amount+ water in a very small tnk. It STINKS, i had to skim for days to get rid of the major smell-didn't last 2 weeks before i clean everything out. but water intro lots of funny swimming things- one is a sort of translucent jelly fish ###### featherduster sort of thing. swims like a jelly fish when disturbed, otherwise stick to LR or glass like anemone. i know the layers cause when i go, i curious so i dig just to see what's there. i think just use the beach sand for DSB better- chanbi,we live on a 'tropical island'- did u know u can see angels & parrotfishes at labrador park ard the pier?also clowns. The pasir ris mangroves i visit once every few weeks to catch small shrimp for seahorses, that's why the gobies are a by product- i try to release as many as possible but they get thru. Have to take a bit of water too- to acclimatise the shrimp to tank water. BTW- there are big dead open brains, coral rubble at that mangrove area at low tide but filled with pistol shrimps(u can hear them)& creepy kinds of snails.blue leg hermits & cockles. yazid, i think changi better bet- too much ash & clay in pasir ris mud.

At both sides(3-4" below surface) pointing at each other, & when u do some thing to your tank(whenever-daily,weekly,fortnite) change the position of the powerheads. i have 3, 2 at each other & 1 pointing towards bottom of opposite tnk corner so waterflow goes round the back of rockwork.
-
yeh, u can try- i also thought of it. BTW- abt 1-2" down into sand/mud u hit a black layer then clay. stinks, & even water there stinks. Once home & mud settle in refugium(which should not be connected first) need to skim the hell out of it!!!all sorts of dead stuff in there+ lots of burrowed clams.

me too- never been able to find!. i got a 5ml one(from some sort of chemical). but still looking for a big turkey baster(something like 1oz volume). been searching a few NTUC & cold storage outlets- so if anyone finds pls list which outlet.

not to mention only failure....much $$$ as well. Tanzy- i prefer to phrase it as trial & error or R&D onghm- u got a rainbow in your tank? usually a 2213 outflow very weak, so ppl just place output at surface for oxygen exchange or a little current- directing your rainbar towards surface does that too. u will know its clogged if u got it somewhere u can keep an eye on it.

coral banded shrimp or cleaner shrimp?
bawater replied to Creetin's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
eprouve- get 2 snails, they will stop new growth(& they do it at nite). A tang will wipe out old growth in a matter of days- then u end up with a fish u need to provide for. If u have a tang on your list then its a good time now- otherwise a good scraping & a little elbow grease needed to remove manually. On the plus side, it does lock up unwanted nutrients so u can harvest weekly. anakjoh- nothing will stop the CBS bully, if u add another CBS, either they will pair or fight to the death, if u add another CS- then CS will pair but still be bullied by CBS. Creetin- your choice on what u want. which u prefer to view? CBS & CS can be mixed but CBS will be the big bully. CS & blood shrimps can be mixed, less bickering. CS & CS and u get a pair-added together or at diff times(just make sure ard same size). -
if i gotta pick one, Battlestar Galactica is my fav of the lot! Damn cool

kel, nearest to u is AMK central- the old hexagon shaped fish shop(the one with goldfishes)near coffeshop/POSB/baker/bra shop. $17-$19 otherwise TPY69 has them.

Everybody is expendable- but my passion is not.

Prefer Hikari , i trust their process quality. but whether or not their products are bio-encapsulated yet to be proven on scientific grounds- fish health overall seems better fed Hikari than any other malaysia/china/taiwan brands. Their foods are clean. Their Brine shrimp are quite good & juicy(u should try a pack). Pity they don't bring in their other products cause in the US they have a full marine range of Hikari.

Do christmas trees turn u on???? u missed the Tanglin one> & the big un' at SOGO city hall.

yep, i use normal 2ft with 5mm & 2ft 5plan tanks- but no high stacking. 6mm won't make a difference when stack up to 1.5ft of rocks-scare the hell out of me if i did that,i guess it will hold the rock weight but u have to account the what IF- What if a rock topples? a 6mm base not gonna bounce the rock back. 1FLx acadia white 1FLx acitinic would be good for fish only- acitinic will bring out colour of the blueish neon fishes(for example- blue devils)

i have a problem too- i have a 4" yellow tang. seems i cant add anymore fishes or they get sliced up. added a copperband butterfly(all was fine in the 1st 2 days) & then it got sliced into pieces on the 3rd day.3weeks later i added a small sailfin tang(cause i thought it was the colours of the butterfly-or the size)- took 20mins before all hell broke loose but this time i was there to fish out the sailfin. It only tolerates clowns, even firegobies it chased out of the tank(literally). so does this mean i got to re-setup ,either rescape or start new tank so that i can intro new fishes?
-
doesn't have to cost that much- just need to find a tank with no corners(which can only be done in acrylic), filtration built in(be it round the tank-cost factor,or external), a chiller & very important FOOD. have a look at underwater world's jelly fish tank & u know the design idea. But there are still problems- a regular one is that the tentacles keep getting tangled up & have to be cut apart due to the space constraint of the tank. They feed dahpnia & rotifiers.

not only $35 for a lion, this week's special offer is $19.90 for a 2" tomato clown. how's abt that? or $60 for a 2.5" frog fish. oops, forgot to mention: NO GUARANTEE NET CAUGHT.

i try to do every 2 weeks(most of the time every 3-4wks). i use a cheap powerhead connected to normal cheap hose,i empty 1 8gal pail of old water then drag the another 8gal pail of new water to the tank, dump in the powerhead & let singapore power do the work. For my 2fts- i empty half tank then top up using the old water(saltmix expensive leh!) from 4ft. same day, 1hr to do 1x4ft & 3x2ft. i will reuse the water till it reaches 100ppm nitrates or turn yellowish...lots of other uses, from raising brine shrimp to holding feeder shrimps. for ghost shrimp i use 50% old SW 50% old FW. New saltmix started the day before change- My other 4ft & 2x 2ft is FW & that i use hose to tap. one thing about regular water changes, try not to wash your filter on the same day as a change- alternate your schedules between filter & water changes.

kwang has big bags @$42 for 8kg. & coralife 7.3kg@$24
