those ships out at deep sea will just bob up with the increased water height and they may not even know that a tsunami is developing....only when this increased water height of the waves breaks suddenly at the shores....that's where all the destruction lies....that's why so far u dun hear any ocean liners or cargo tankers getting into big trouble in the news.... only coastal shores destruction.

good DSLR to start with slowly it will be time to invest in a good macro lens....even scales on your firefish would be visible

see lah.... now scare away the seller liao.... the seller nice enough to inform us what are the items not available and people question his intention or even the right to conduct his sale jeffery ling has been in the forum way way before some of us have been in here, even though he has been low profile, i am sure he has many nice things up for sales... gee
-
I think he must be getting PMs regarding his corals even before he gets the chance to post what are the items up for sales... that is why, for those items he knows he is not selling/for adoption only, he quickly states their non-availability as soon as he can....i see nothing wrong with that. while meantime, he can slowly take pics or decide which are the items he will be selling....which is why he say the sales is happening soon but not now. it's definitely better for him to state that some items are not available rather than having tons of PMs asking him whether he can sell this or that or not, even before photos or information of the items for sale are released. so be patient...i am sure he will update the thread with what he wishes to sell in due time

New project for the year - recirculating becketts
roidan replied to Achilles Tang's topic in Product Reviews
That's Nanook's skimmer anyway, should be very easy to add recirculation to current beckett skimmers... just drill an extra hole in the box for the suction part of the pump and drill another hole in the main body chamber for the feed...viola....you have it.. -
New project for the year - recirculating becketts
roidan replied to Achilles Tang's topic in Product Reviews
this concept is nothing new already....just that not many beckett users and makers got down to implementing it... http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthre...ulating+beckett the concept got mentioned in March 2002 before.....yeah...more than 2 years ago... just like not all conventional single pass beckett skimmers are designed the same or perform the same....the recirculating feature definitely needs more thought otherwise it will perform worse than a single pass beckett.... good luck guys -

Non Reef Stuffs: Selling Sony Cybershot DSC-F707
roidan replied to Navyblue's topic in Sell off/Pasar Malam Shop
just for info, i bought my f828 in july around $1.7k but sold it around $1k in september i think the going-rate for f828 now is also around $900-$1k, thats why the earlier models like f505/707/717 are not moving as fast in the 2nd hand market nonetheless upz for your sales, price-wise i can't comment but camera-wise it is definitely a decent camera -
hehe... yeah....hope it goes to a good place also.... coz it has been staying under 150W MHs..i dun want it to suffer with dimmer lights and also dun want it to suffer under brighter lights.. how's the fat blue tang swimming at jurong?

thanks guys... have shortlisted a few already... .....those that i did not select and contact ...my apologies

with me past 1 year already.... from a fistful to its huge size now.... more than 1 ft when fully open....finally got it out because dun want it to sting my other corals despite it sitting pretty always in one place, its territorial reach is expanding coz of its growth those who have seen it would know how center-piece worthy it is in a spacious tank... would miss it though, hope it goes to a good home for bros i know well, adoption fee waived....for bros i don't, adoption fee applies *RBTA at the background of picture*

i dun think there is an exact point of having a big skimmer or not... rather, it is having a skimmer that can aid your system in coming to equilibrium faster and easier.... if your current skimmer is unable to cope with your system's loading demands...that means you need a better skimmer, whether it gets bigger in size or better in technology is another thing... probably u can also increase oxygenation to the water faster and easier with a stronger skimmer...but you must be mindful that there is a saturation level when it comes to oxygenating the water also.

hehe...underskimming? dun think so lah....nitrates back near to undetectable so i am pretty pleased with it....i remembered with my aquaC and H&S...nitrates crept slowly to a peak of around 5 to 10 ppm as the fishes got bigger and i fed more....that's why i embarked on the quattro....and now since the quattro on dual mode is bringing nitrates down to 0, to fire the other 2 for a full-quad operation is probably better or grossly overskimming but unnecessary from my point of view for now coz i am running a fish and lps tank....unlike sps tanks like you guys...i shouldn't deprive the system of too much nutrients
-
heee....actually nothing great one lah... if one has many fishes or big tangs....even if use a weipro will get nasty skimmate also best indication of how well the skimmer is performing for our systems is to observe parameters like nitrates....if nitrates are 0.....then whether the skimmer cup shows alot of skimmate or very little skimmate, shouldn't bother us too much if it shows alot of skimmate and yet nitrates are still significant, means the skimmer is not good enough....if it shows little skimmate and yet nitrates are still significant, means the skimmer is not good enough also...hehe
-
lol..bo bian lah...my fishes big liao..poo more liao...hehe see the white foam below the cup u know how black the skimmate is liao.... white is white..black is black..hehe

waa...so cute! congrats superman.... time really flies hor, i felt it wasn't so long ago when u told us the good news... happy parenting bro

personally i think operating flow is more important...especially if you have a flowmeter and notice the air flow is falling, means it's time to check if the injector is choked or the needlewheel pump needs some cleaning from debris in the pump....say at one's favourite setting is 1500 l/hr from the skimmer's max air flow of 2000l/hr....and one day u find it drops to 1000 l/hr....means it's time for skimmer maintenance..that's my personal view on how we can use the flowmeter on a regular basis. as for max air flow as given by manufacturers like BBK, i think it's just a stats figure of the potential of the skimmer....make it easier to understand, it's like a car manufacturer states the max speed of a ferrari or a honda. we do not drive at max speed probably during the whole useful life of the car, but yet this stat of max speed is given to us. some people like to tune for more airflow and some people like to tune for less airflow to get the type of bubble size and density that they like...just like some drives a ferrari at race tracks over 200km/h and some drives a ferrari at 90km/h on our highway...it's personal preference. and which is why i said that manufacturers' numbers logically are published at their max rating to avoid confusion and discrepancy. more often than not, bubble size is improved at the expense of bubble density and vice versa....as such, it's hard to determine what is the best bubble size and density otherwise there wouldn't be any need for air valves and manufacturers can just prefix an air nozzle of specific hole size for air suction. The manufacturers probably can suggest a starting point where all users can start from and they will deviate in both directions from this recommended points based on their own usage and judgement..

so fully open BBK300 is 2400 l/hr, and fully open with silencer is 2000 l/hr... in other words the BBKs air flow ratings on their price specs list (as well as the air flow rate that i collated for BBKs) are at fully open with silencer.... oic..thanks for the input alanseah... which means my hunch earlier about manufacturers' air flow ratings are at full open should be correct...since different users will adjust differently and end up with different air flow but at fully open, all identical skimmer models should have the same airflow with little discrepancy

forced air induction....idea hor anyway, using an aircompressor to force air via ceramic air-plates may produce bubbles that may rival other methods and yet able to sustain high ABSOLUTE air introduction into the skimmer chamber.. just make as tall a skimmer as a reefer would accept for his placement application, put the air-plate at the base and then feed the skimmer with a water rate as desired....back to the basics of skimming....and i seriously think it would work as well if not better than some of our current skimmers coz we are probably too obsessed over gadgets like beckett/mazzei injectors and needlewheels when ultimately it just boils down to the interaction of the air and water mixture that reminds me of another topic for skimmer discussion Optimum Air-Water mixture....just like air-fuel mixture in our cars...ok..we shall leave this optimum level for discussion in another thread also...
-
keeping to the topic discussion, i wonder why the BBK 300 specs states that it draws 2000l/hr of air when this picture taken from their website shows BBK 300 drawing 2400l/hr of air maybe 2400l/hr is fully open and 2000l/hr is operating flow? in any case, it's better for them to underrate their flow than to overrate the flow and end up with disappointing customers...

anyway, for comparison, some bros feel price vs price is more important to them, wattage vs wattage more important , or bubble size vs bubble size ..so some more technically inclined bros can contribute by setting up dedicated comparison threads similar to this... and i have to say again...this is a comparison of ABSOLUTE volume of air suction of the skimmers...what the skimmers do with the air sucked in is another category...whether the air bubbles wanna look pretty dancing inside the skimmer doing nothing or the air bubbles are working hard to remove organics are of a different comparison category let's keep this thread to the discussion of absolute air suction.....i would suggest those who want to compare other factors to start similar threads...because if end up lumping all the factors to compare, the comparisons will draw no conclusion as many reefers have tried in other international forums
-
aiyo..... of coz air suction is not everything or the most important factor lah...and i dun think i mentioned in any part of the thread that the one that sucks more air is the best skimmer....but i just mention that coincidentally the higher models of skimmers be it the deltec line or bbk line sucks more air than their lower models... aiyo..please note this thread is not to compare which is the best absolute skimmer...but just to compare which skimmer sucks in more air...duh your 902 may not suck as much as the rest on the list...but i am sure there are other factors that make it work like a dream for you... relax lah abang

alfa...all these i think is quite common knowledge lah... just like the theory of fluidised reactors....many small surface areas is better than a whole big clump of media sitting in a media bag...duh and i dun think we need to dwell into calculating the surface areas of the bubble spheres to know that well...maybe some of us are not satisfied with the size of our bubbles till maybe they get to nano-scale? since nano-technology is the IN-thing nowadays... like i said, this thread is just to document who is the best sucker....perhaps we can start another thread to document bubble sizes...price...wattage..efficiency...and so on that's why there is never a conclusion which skimmer is absolutely better..... really too many categories to compare ...size for size...wattage for wattage...bubble size for bubble size....efficiency for efficiency...price for price...and so on.... in my opinion the best skimmer for oneself is one that fits the budget and performs satisfactorily to one's own expectations anyway, the collated airflow comparison done by me should help those deciding between H&S/deltec and bubblekings in a little way i hope
