  1. You have to be careful with acrylic tank especially you have a back problem because they are consider high maintenance tank as coralline aglae will easily grow on the acrylic and time and effort taken to remove them can be a pain. Even to remove the stratches with the right sandpaper can be a pain. Recently, there is someone in reef central complained the time taken to clean his small acrylic tank 50 gallon < is more than the time taken to clean a 200 gallon tank. i agree with some of the reefer using MH for FOWLR tank ... but maybe 70Watt 20K bulb (not sure whether they have such) becasue 20K will have the least diatom and also you have the caustic networks (rippling effect)... T5 and FL is not impressive ... and with actinic lighting makes your tank looks cloudy when compared to MH 20K lighting. I believe this category on FOWLR emphasized alot on Size of tank and aquascaping, not to mention the lightings. It would be interesting to see more species tank in future.
  2. You have a tank I could only dream of How many fishes you have in there ? I think even though you stick your clam onto some rocks - they will still move if they do not like the place. The clams are capable of secreting some chemical which will melt the rocks. That happen to my clam.
  3. cannondale, Use a thin blade saw to saw off the dead portion - it will recover in due time. But be careful not to saw the tissue maybe give it a few mm for allowance. I think if you experiencing a melt down - it is usu due to strong lighting. One of my pieces experience a melt down in 48 hours' time. Also try to hide it partially. Hope it helps.
  4. Hammer are not hard at all. Calcium about 350 to 400 ppm will do. Nitrate try to keep it down like 10ppm ... if it is high .. no matter what you keep it is not going to be successful. Mime melted till left 5 strands ...on a branch becasue I didn't know how during that time ... but now ... it have 4 - 5 branches ... I didnt even feed it.. as long as there is nutrient in the water - it should do well. In fact if the nutrient is low .. the color of the green tips might turn stronger ....provided with sufficient lighting. i was using 20K 150MH during that time. I am still keeping Frogspawn species (similar family to hammer) even though I have sps in my tank - they are beautiful. Is that yours ? - the color is very nice
  5. I also have one aquaculture pc - RTN very fast - like what you say 3 days .... i applied glue the first day ....still RTN ...second day yet the third it still continue to RTN ... I finally take the painful decision to Frag it. Man .... it depends on luck to save this guy ..... .... even though it is aquaculture or wild .... if RTN starts .... better stay alert ..... and start fragging ... when nothing else seems to stop .... Wah you very gungho ... dont do anything ... me dare not take the risk .. I am afraid the RTN will spread throughout the tank.... one piece 50 - 60 bucks ... heartbroken ... to see it spreads. So if you start glueing or fragging from the left side -it wouldn't have spread to the base ... clammy, Regardless of whether aquaculture or wild ... once the guy decides to go RTN .... you have to start praying ...
  6. The entire base almost RTN and only the branches still ok. Now i am seeing some growth on the glued area -top down. From the past, I always frag them up but I am trying differently now because i noticed one of the colony that I frag is still taking a long time to recover its color. Probably due to the stress from fragging.
  7. I think alot of the wild sps is not used to our tank parameter. I have one piece I bought also RTN .... i put so much super glue until half of the sps looks plastic and finally the RTN stopped.
  8. Anybody care to share where to get those nylon bolt and butterfly nuts ? Been looking around along kelantan lane ...for sometime. rdgs
  9. I realise it also kills flat worms.
  10. Bob, There is something you might want to try - May I know what salt mix are you using ?
  11. How many of you experiences some kind of die off after massive water change ? Probably not minor water change that i am talking about - about 30% or more water changes. My encounter - crabs & shrimps are always the first to go.
  12. What are the general comments regarding this report. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-03/rs/feature/
  13. In fact my sunrise dotty is quite big about 3 to 4 " but I have lots of sps crabs - and a cleaner shrimp - so far I don't see them attacking them even my cleaner shrimp - it leave it alone. But the dotty I got seems to be very shy as I seldom see it swim in the open ... I think case by case basis.
  14. Infact we saw it at iwarna the other day .... in fact the black leopard wrasse looks the same except that the tail is not yellow that's all ... so I placed the wrong bet .. but I checked on the diet ... looks like it has the same diet as the leopard ....
  15. But boxershrimp .... I have my reservation ...they can be destructive .....tread with caution.
  16. Jim, Got the wrong wrasse ... it is a yellow-tail wrasse ... actually wanted to go back to xchange for a leopard but drop the idea because this guy is quite interesting to watch ... it is very small fish ...about a fifth of the size of most of my fishes and yet this guy always swim in the open ..only in the night it hides amongst the rocks ... it jump out once into my overflow ... managed to grap it back to the main tank....now it is happy again..... probably once bitten twice shy .... ...But learned that this guy is a high maintenace fish .. so keeping my fingers cross... Gouldian, Orchid dotty sound like very difficult to find ....i am looking to get another 2 more if there is any ... threesome sounds more exciting Let me know if you find any.
  17. Maybe you want to search the dottyfamily - looks like there is alot of non-bristle-worm friendly. I have 2 dotty - orchid dotty and sun-rise dotty. So far my worms not as many as you have described. But on the other hand - I am also not sure how good these guys are becasue i have never see them eating bristle-worms
  18. Maybe Olinda, Sly and Taufik ... combine and form a band ... maybe they will sell very well
  19. ...Tell the european and american counterpart they are buying at $1 and they will have an immediate heart attack
  20. You are kidding me ........... then your setup cost reduce drastically man .... what's in my tank then I think not more than 20 bucks Nice tank BTW.
  21. you mentioned in your first mail. Your pics abit small leh ... bigger will be more impressive.
  22. Nice place ...always wanted to pay a visit to africa ...but heard too much stories about Johanesburg and capetown ..........now too late with additional member
  23. Used to have a small school of yellow-tail fang blenny but didn't make it ... as they are not feeding well in my tank .... would love to tried again on those which feeds well.. http://www.saltcorner.com/sections/zoo/fis...trodorsalis.htm The good thing is the fish is cheap
