hi guys...was wondering wad causes the phosphate level in the water to rise? is it an inevitable result of a maturing tank? anyway, are there other methods of reducing or eliminating phosphate levels other than using products like Rowaphos or through water changes?? does growing caulerpa that can reduce nitrates help? thanks alot in advance!!!

HELP!!! why is this happening?
redmushroom posted a topic in Disease treatment/parasite/pest control
hi all.... think i have some problem here. it all started when my royal gramma contracted some disease that later caused its death. it flicked itself against the substrate and later seemed to be releasing body slime to get rid of the disease. the slime then peeled away in sheets that were creamy white before it finally died. i read from a marine book and found it to match the description of "Brooklynella hostilis"...but i am not sure if its really the correct diagnosis. anyway....all subsequent fishes that i bought have perished due to white spots or this same disease that had infected my royal gramma.even my cleaner shrimp that treated the infected fishes has died already.however...the funny thing is...those fishes that i had before the royal gramma are all still alive and very healthily feeding. so if this "parasite" that infected my royal gramma is still in the tank...how can i get rid of it? also...should i stop introducing fishes for the next one month to let the parasites die off or somethin?? anyone here had a similar experience to mine?? i want to add more fish but i am afraid they would end up another victim to this disease or parasite..if there is one to start with. Please help if u have any valuable advice. all responses are deeply appreciated!!!! -
k thanks alot guys. think i will follow ur opinions and carry out a water change everyweek with distilled water till i am able to keep the nitrate levels at a stable and minimum low..

hi all....my tank's nitrate level is quite high at about 70 mg/l. was wondering if a 20 percent water change every week is acceptable to the marine life and okay for my system. am running a 24 by 18 by 18 tank wif IOS. is it possible that the nitrate levels be dropped to less than 10 mg/l with a water change every week? also...i was reading about how a refugium with caulerpa can reduce nitrates or even eliminate them. if that were possible....is a water change still necessary and if so why?? thanks in advance for ur help guys and all comments are welcomed!!!

hi thanks for all the replies. my water parameters are ok except that my nitrate is high at about 70mg/l. my filtration system is a IOS one so i guess its sorta like a nitrate factory. PH is at 8.2 but temp is at 30. am not running chiller so its all thanks to the damn hot weather these days. anyway is there any other way to clean the rocks apart from leavin them in very high salinity water? any suggestions or comments are welcome!!

hi guys....i'm thinkin of doing a major overhaul for my tank. was wondering whether there is any way i can "clean" the Live Rocks that are currently in my tank. would like to make sure that there are no unwanted parasites or whatever that may have previously inhabited in the rocks. is it okay to spray and wash the rocks with tapwater and scrub the rocks with a brush? or is there any better or correct way to do this so that i can be confident that i am introducing good clean live rocks clear of parasites or unwanted organisms? thanks a million in advance.....

hi to all guys out there...been readin around this forum and i've come across the word refugium and was wondering wad exactly is it. is like like a sump tank? wad does it do and wad does the refugium contain? and lastly, why is there a need for lighting in the refugium? would need some enlightenment...thanks to all those pros out there who wld help!!
