Can't help but notice this.. Why is the overflow pipe reduced to a smaller pipe size? It may choke up over time.. Or is it for the return?.. hmm.. Can I suggest this.. Turn the sump tank left-right. The overflow pipe should not be stepped down. But let it overflow to the left (sump tank turned left-right). The return can then return straight up to reduce headloss due to less detours. Skimmerless.. What if your macro algae does not work, any backup plans? You'll need decent lights and low flow for chaetos to flourish. Any ways to oxygenate the tank without a skimmer?

After toying with the idea of MH, T5, of a combination of both, I've finally decided to go for full T5 for my 2by2. Wanting the flexibility if 6 tubes, I had to DIY, as there seem to be no such option for a 2ft unit. So armed with some aluminium bars, some T5 accessories, some shopping time at SLT, and a whole lot of elbow grease, this is what I came up with.. I had at first wanted to fix the individual reflectors permanently on the frame, as I know the reflectors will attain a mind of their own, each wanting to face its own way. Though technically it's possible, changing bulbs can become a challenge to keep the skin on my fingers intact. Therefore I followed the traditional way. Do note that the reflectors are purchased from a different vendor from the 4. Tubes are: 2 x ATI Aquablue Plus 2 x ATI Blue Plus 1 x ATI Purple Plus 1 x Giesseman Actinic Plus How the tank looks under 6 tubes all on.

I believe it will grow back bit by by with every molt. Can regenerate so much in one molt.

This MH can be customised into a set with 2 T5 tubes flanking it. I have the parts to do up the frame for this set. For your reference, this is my build of 6 xT5 tubes using aluminium bars. My original plan was to as above, MH + T5. But changed plans to 6 tubes. If you want me to build the above frame to accommodate the MH and 2 T5s, please give me a tinker to discuss.

Yes, you can and should wean him off live fish. Try cutting up a market prawn into cubes, and "marinate" with a little cyclopeeze. Then dangle and jiggle this in front of the lionfish to simulate a live object. Arouse his interest. Once he takes the bait, feeding him would be easy from then on. Make sure you don't cut too much prawns at one go. Best to freeze them and thaw only what you need per feed.

Skimless tank with live stock and corals
kaykay replied to gymbvolka's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Hi qingwen, thanks for your compliments. In the tank are some fishes, soft corals, and a few heads of LPS corals. The basic function of a skimmer is to export inorganic waste before they contaminate the tank water. My skimmerless method uses an underflow algae scrubber, which confines the organic waste in the water at this specific region and utilised by green algae to grow here. You can read more about it here -
Ups for I'm ready to wire it up this afternoon. Please advise. Thanks.

My 1/4hp chiller on my old 100L tank only kicks in 15 times a day. You have to match a feeder pump flowrate accordingly. I previously used a slower feeder, and it kicked in more than 3 times an hour. Once I changed to a higher flow feeder, problem solved. The rest of your equipment list looks good! You may also wanna consider keeping the intended seahorses in the refugium (low flow).

Sorry got jumbled up. Ignore the above. Hi Joey, welcome to the salty world.I would like to share my views. 1. Go for the higher flow 1264. There's only benefits to it when more water volume can be renewed every second. I'm already using a 2,800lph on my 200L nano. 2. Refugiums should be a slow flow section. It should not be in the inline flow of return. Most reefers will build a separate compartment in the sump tank, with the flow T-off from the down pipe. Go check out Madpetz refugiums in both his display tanks and you'll get a pretty good idea. 3. Your lights are good for most coral keeping, even sps. They do, however, generate a good amount of heat too. So this leads me to... 4. Chilling. A 1/4hp chiller barely just cuts it for your volume and lighting equipment. It's always better time spec up equipment. A higher rated chiller will chill down water faster, and thus run less. Thus prolonging your equipment life.

Hi attached pix of the e ballast. Pray tell the live and neutral wires go into which sockets of the ballast. Thanks.

Wow Rocky bro.. this really rocks!!! How big is your screen? And your 5x red LEDs are 3W each? I haven't had the courage to leave it for 3 weeks. Most I left it is for 2 weeks only.

Slight rust at the edges, but in perfect working condition. Wiring to the Phillips ballast required. The photo borrowed from bro Ullas on his tank. SMS/whatsapp me to deal. 945525zero9
