Nice rics, bro.. If you ever thought of fragging for sale, do notify me. I'm looking for a piece of ric to start a colorful branch on my bare rockscape.

Longnose Hawkfish doing upside down handstand. For 5 hours!! He remained stationary like this for 5 solid hours! Haha. We all thought he's dead shortly after adding into tank. So when I tried to pick up the corpse, he made a dash away! Hahaha.. -

Hey, it's a good idea! Use the return pump to chiller first before directly back to display. Why didn't I think of it? Hopefully I won't suffer much head loss with this setup. The return is currently an Eheim 1250. I can save on another pump too! I think I must then permanently PVC-glue the joints at the bulkhead at the wall of the ios and the display area to prevent accidents. Gotta shop for double taps now. Btw, my ios compartments are as follow. 1. Internal Algae Scrubber + a bag of biohome. (the biohome is to hold the ATS close to the tank glass, so no stray lights escapes the ATS box) 2. Protein skimmer 3. Bag of Rowaphos and a bag of activated carbon before the return pump.

Hi, I'm getting a rather new 1/4hp hailea chiller from a reefer next week. Will be getting either a 800L/hr or a 1,000L/hr pump. My tank's only 90L in total. So the chiller is over-spec by a few times. (1) Is it ok to place my chiller pump in the compartment before skimmer, and return just at the skimmer inlet? I know it may not be ideal, as the chilled water gets churned into the skimmer before returned to the return pump, then to display tank. But this is the most practical placement for me in the limited ios I have. (2) Or I can return the chilled water to the return pump area. (3) Otherwise, the chiller pump will be at the same ios compartment as the return pump, and return to the same compartment. I may be contemplating returning directly into the display tank, but I really don't want to see anymore pipings from the display point of view. Which placements above (1)/(2)/(3) is the best placement in my situation? Advice please?

The one I'm talking about is the LED type. Looks like a ball.

I think what peacemaker did was to coat the PVC T-joint with sand. It then looked natural. -
Petmart has stock for the Arcadia moonlights at $35 each. They also has a China version which is 99.9% resemblance to the Arcadia one at $25 only, if I don't remember wrongly.

Yup I saw that. And I think it's a damn good idea. I actually thought of doing so, but somehow I reckoned my shallow sand bed could not accommodate the PVC thickness. So I gave it a miss. Thinking back, I should have increased the sandbed thickness.. Sigh now too late to build this underground infrastructure already. -

Molting. My cleaner shrimp molts every 10-14 days. It is growing too quickly. I chose one of the smaller specimens I could find, and now it's at least 50% bigger than at 2 months ago. I know it's a good sign when they grow. I just don't want them to grow too fast and become disproportionate to the fixed nano dimensions of my tank. This guy feels totally at home in my tank, often picking on my fingers whenever I feed the sun corals. I guessed it's probably due to this boldness that it molts frequently without fear of being eaten immediately after molting in this docile environment. It has molted 5 times in total over 2 months plus. The latest de-shelling. -

How did you catch them bro? Using net or just grab with hands? To forcibly displace them to the new hole also sound like a challenging task, requiring nimble fingers. Lol. -
For flood to go back tank, water in ios will have to rise pretty high, so as to clear the entire height of the ios partition to display tank. We hardly see this happening. Instead, display tank water level is always constant. So equilibrium is always maintained, meaning out rate is always same as return rate. Laminar flow is?

Can I use 2-week old salt mixed water bought from LFS?
kaykay replied to kaykay's topic in General Reefkeeping_
With the above advice from the various bros, aerating seems to be critical while holding the salt mix in storage. Real estate space is quite premium in my house. The price to pay for holding water at home is a piece of nagging everyday!! Hahaha!! Hence I'll prefer to do fresh mix whenever I can. -
Does it really work this way? I somehow reckon the amt of water flowing out to the ios is determined by the flow rate of the return pump only. If the wavemaker pushes more water than the pump rate, disequilibrium occurs and flooding in the ios will occur. But it doesn't. The wavemaker should ensure all corners of within the tank is properly turned over. Thus I feel you should aim the wavemaker somewhere else. I always like to create chaos flow in the main tank by opposing the general flow from the return outlet.
-
UFO? Haha.. Perhaps I'm too traditionalist, always think that FTS has to be an unobstructed view of the entire tank from the front. Lol..
-
Nice and tidy. Btw is this the final position of your wavemaker? I'm thinking most reefers wouldn't want to show the backside of an equipment in the display tank at the front ya.. It'll also mar your FTS when showcasing the tank. My 2 cents.
-
Yes there is the Eheim double taps you can consider. They are quite costly though.
-
SMSed you.

I took the max possible volume. 60x30x45cm. I didn't factor in the "unused" height at the top of the tank. 20x turnover would be 1,400L/hr. After T-ing off to the FR & chiller, assuming 400L to FR, and 1,000L to chiller, still will have 1,600L left.
-
For a single return pump linked in series to chiller, FR, and back to tank is not an ideal setup. Each piece of equipment will require a specific flow rate to optimise their performance. If you're dead set on a single pump, do T-off for the equipment in the line, each with valve control for easy detachment or for maintenance. Anyway for your tank volume of 80L, the actual flow rate (reduced) after the T-offs would be sufficient for more than 10x turnover.

But now they have a hole at the back, do I have to catch them together and displace them at the new hole? Sounds difficult.. -

They are alive!! Hallelujah! Found the Yasha Goby / Pistol Shrimp pair! Shrimp found busy ferrying sand to make a deeper crevice. Goby just sat there staring into space. Although their home is facing the tank front, they are one rock away from clear line of sight. I have to peep them from under a cave of the front rock to see half the goby. Do I have to resign my fate of being a symbiotic peeping Tom, or can I coax them to the front? Any ideas? One more look at them before their release into the tank. -

Saw the Yasha goby for the first few hours I let him into the tank. Have been missing since then. Almost 44 hours already. Can file missing person (fish) report. Wonder if he's ok, or rendezvous-ing with the pistol shrimp he came with? Btw, they went separate ways when they were released into the tank simultaneously. Will they ever meet if they're still alive? Last seen of the Yasha. (@2300 08.07.12)
