  1. hi, I hatch baby brine shrimp once a while as a treat. Hacting youself is safer. Live food might be necessary to entice new fish to eat.
  2. hi all, Anyone owns the tunze calcium dispenser? It's basically a ~3in dia tube with a PVC cap. It has one inlet at the bottom and a outlet at the top. No pump. You dump kalk in and hook it up to the auto top up. When the top up is activated, the water pushing into the push will mix the kalk hence it has no moving parts. Is this good enogh compare to a motorised mixer? This would be much more simple to DIY than other design.
  3. The bottom plate is like that one. Its the access for you to take out the pump. You can check the tunze forum at RC for more info.
  4. A rough bill of material. 1 x strip board 1 x green led 1 x amber led 2 x 500 ohm resisters 1 x project box. 2 x switches 4 x RCA connectors Wires. Total above about $20 2 x float switches wired in series ($18 ea) 1 x Tunze Metering pump from Reef Depot. Blue John Guest Tubing from Reef Deopt. Tunze mounting hardware for float switch (already have). Total < $80 for a operational system. TODO: I have made provision to mount another safety float switch to cut off if the water level gets too high. Most of the ideas come from the tunze osmolator. The whole system works off 9V because the adapter could not handle the metering pump current load with 12V. Using 12V the pump would be able to push the water higer and futther which is not needed in this case. Advantages of this DIY: - Quite cheap compare to commercial system whose prices mostly do not come with a pump.. - Safe since only DC is used throughout. No high voltage (220V). - I get a backup pump for my tunze osmolator. Disadvantage: - Not as many safe guards as commercial systems such as the tunze osmolator that I already own. For example it would turn on the pump for 10mins max. - No build-in hysteresis. Hope the pump don't turn on/off too fast.
  5. This is the control box. It is just a simple serial DC circuit. It has an ON/OFF switch for power. One red led for power on indication. One yellow led for pump on indication. One force pump on switch.
  6. The pail (for fresh water) with two holes drilled at the side for the outlet tubing (blue john guest tube) and power for tunze metering pump.

  10. I will attach the plans below. This is for the simplest design using the 9/12V Tunze replacement metering pump. Look for the other plans which uses a relay if you want to use an AC pump. My actual design will probably add another switch to force top up. It is just a very simple series circuit. Two float switch for safety. Just brought two float switchs at Jutech at Basement of sim lim square @ $18 each. Any knows of other cheap DC pumps around?
  11. For those not so confident about electricity it might be safer if you go all DC. Then you don't need a relay, just an adapter to supply 12/9V for the DC pump. The circuit is just a simple serial circuit. The only DC pump I know is the Tunze Osmolator replacement pump (see www.reefdpot.com.sg). Or maybe a pump water using a battery power air pump? I got a Tunze Osmolator very impressed with it. However I'm planning to diy another one using the above concept for another system of mine.

  13. I don't have any problems. I uses enaly and rowa in a FR too. Maybe your FR got jamed? I used to have problem with Resun FR. Switch to other kind and it seems better now.
  14. 4 weeks is much better. I prefer hypo. Copper might be too harsh on an Tang. I do fresh water dip (~5-10 mins) before QT for 4 weeks and then fresh water dip again before introducing to display tank.
  15. If you know exactly what you want, i.e no need to design or setup, I can recommand Soon Heng at Blk 201 Hougang St 21. Note that however their tanks edge are not so nice necause they are machine cut (?), They use a stone to sand.

  17. What is the concentration of Mg like? Is it MgCl2 ?
  18. I believe that you do not need that much flow on the return pump. Just enough to drive your equipment and skimmer is enough. Maybe NET 2-4x turn over per hour. This will reduce the noise of the overflow water splashing etc. Use tunze or close loops for higher total flow in the tank.
