Sea Fan & Cauliflower - various
Norvin Ng replied to Norvin Ng's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
AT, Your are right! My cauliflower opened beautifully the first two days but now its like a stump for no apparent reason. Do you think liquid food meant for those filter corals and sponges will do for them? -
I now have a purple tang in a floating cage in my main tank to let my aggressive yellow tang get use to him before I release him into the main tank. Probably wait for a week more. Trying to feed everyone near the cage so that they can get use to each others' face sooner. This was suggested by AT and I think it should work. My first attempt to release the PT into the tank resulted in him frightened by the YT till he stayed in one corner of the tank, so stressed that I simply fish him at my first attempt.

Thanks AT, Putting them straight against a current is a challenge indeed! Still trying to get it right. -
I have done two 20% water change the last two months for my tank with salt water bought from Pac Marine. So far pleased as I noticed that my corals, especially the jewel corals are full bloom the next day. Also no more hassle with DI/RO, de-chlorinate water etc. Any thoughts from the gurus out there?

Anyone succesfully keeping these and any important things to note besides the chemical balance part? Temperature, water current, lighting etc? Thanks.

Marine Image (Yishun Central) now only do set ups and don't sell fishes anymore. Hawaii Marine (Sembawang) is now renovating and might be closed for a few weeks or on some days. They have an eight feet show tank in the making and re-doing all their tanks in the shop. Can speak to Willy for picture taking when they have finish their reno.

Please advise: Crabs dying in my tank
Norvin Ng replied to ckpeh's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Spent two hours catching my crab yesterday and found two instead. The bigger bugger (was a cute one when its was 1 cent size) is my suspect that was eating one of my coral (and a few smaller fishes). It was also trying to drag one of my coral branch into the rocks when I got home yesterday!!!! Rock arrangement was completely "re-arranged" in the process!!! The only crab I like now is the black pepper crab that my in-laws will be buying for dinner tonight!!! Trust me, keep your crabs and a few months later, you will be posting - how to catch my crabs"!! -
Went to the LFS near the fast roti prata shops up north on Sunday and saw that they still have those rocks that we need for our tanks. Basically "cured" as all almost whitish and nothing is growing on them. Hope this is "quiet" and "hintful" enoughful for those who missed the HL boat. Their fish stock coming on Sunday. Went to Sealife today - Hawaii fishes coming next week!

Thanks for all the tips, much appreciated. Hope to show what I pick up one day!

Project New Reef by Achilles Tang
Norvin Ng replied to Achilles Tang's topic in General Reefkeeping_
anyone heard of wives leaving their husbands because of his obessions with his marine hobby? My whole family is asleep and I am still here!!! Before this I was with my tank...... -
Hi Limpc I used to have your exact configuration and gave up and finally moved into a bigger tank and a sump. I am now also using this filter media - Biohume or something like that - said to help in N03 as well. They look like cigarette butts and comes in whitish and reddish versions. The latter is said to be better and claims "no need to replace". Expensive though, about S$60 for 1 kg but said to be good for up to a 1000 litre tank. My present tank is 200+ litres... super kia-su you see..... wanted to say byebye to N03 forever.. my N03 so far has never gone above 10 ppm. Now is at 5 ppm. Good luck! AT, if you see Reno again, tell say hi to him for me. I am working in the same office block as his wife. Went over to his place to view his tank and got hooked!

Please advise: Crabs dying in my tank
Norvin Ng replied to ckpeh's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Crabs when small are cute, but not when they grow from 1 cm to 5 cm in a few months!!! I have lost a couple of smaller fishes over a few days after buying them!! Have been trying to catch it but its always hiding within the rocks. Actually hoping it will die off suddenly!! -
Calcium Test Kits and Sea-Chem buffer
Norvin Ng replied to Creetin's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Take a look at these websites: [url=http://www.simplifiedreefkeeping.com/faq/faq.htm]http://www.simplifiedreefkeeping.com/faq/faq.htm[/uhttp://www.threestepstoareefaquarium.com/RL] Maybe others can provide better sites. I saw a site that was using only seacham products the other day. Will try to find it. -
Custom Tank at yr size for marine, fresh water
Norvin Ng replied to Lim64's topic in Sell off/Pasar Malam Shop
Heard that one way to make LH head bigger is to blow air inside... Maybe a puffer fish can help.... -
Your right, AT, heard about that. Its about S$60 per bottle and Pac Marine (Lor Halus) has it as well. But it may not be a long term solution. BTW, FishNFriends was the one that helped set up my first 2' tank. But he seems to be disappeared, guess now focusing on his main business in professional cleaning and hygeine business. Can't recall the chap's name now, unique one though.

I once put in too much medication into my tank and the leather coral grew a "skin" but it slowly peeled of after about a week and now its in full bloom. But I noticed that the sides seems to be "melting away" but its still blooming. Any possible reasons?
-
So far I have yet come across any reliable product or chemical that will the job well. I had that problem when I had a 2' tank and N03 was always sky high. Frequent water change seems always the fastest but the most "lay cheh"! When I started my bigger tank, went straight for my deep sand bed and also tried this expensive filter media - biohume or something. S$60 per 1 kg. So far my N03 is aways below .5 ppm after these few months.

Any tips of how to take great fish pics inside our tanks? I am using a Kodak MX 1700 (1.5M pixel). Its an old model (>2 years old), maybe that's why.

Coral Branch Distintegrating!!!
Norvin Ng replied to Norvin Ng's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Sorry for the lousy pic, was trying to get the shot possible but guess still not good enough. BTW, on the techniques of using a digital camera will be my next topic. Never seem to be able to take a clear pic of my fishes. Alway having the "ghost image" effect. They don't stay still and say "cheese" do they? On my coral - I have yet seen anything giving a go at it so far. Unless its the crab during lights off time at night. I only see fragments of coral right below the breakage point, like that they are just falling off. I have three branches and this is the only one so far. Do you think it will die off if it should break off on day? -
Yeap, its from Marine Life Hong Leong Gardens. Recommended by Patrick. Just press the tab onto the glass, sit back and watch. Bought this as my tang is "high class".... not interested in lettuce and supermarket nori. I was using vege flakes but they started to breakdown into very small pieces and grew some whitish stuff on them (look like fungus).
-
I just noticed that the a branch that is holding my coral is slowing breaking up!!!! Bit by bit its falling off and now a significant "lobang" can be seen. The soft tissues of the coral looks well and still fully opens up. A pic below: Any idea whats happening? I have been "on the ball" with all the supplements - kalk, reef plus, reef buffer etc? By the way, is the hard branch part of the coral?
