Clown fish disturbing jewel stone
nicholas_yeo replied to kokhui's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Guys, found this section from wetwebmedia. Looks like it is a good thing the clown fish is working on the jewel ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FAQs about Poritid Corals 1 Quick Question Hello Bob! My most recent fish purchase a Skunk Clown (Amphiprion sandaracinos) has taken to my Branching Flower Pot coral (Alveopora gigas) as if it were a anemone. <This happens> Will this harm/irritate/kill my Branching Flower Pot coral? If so, what would you suggest (besides adding an anemone)? Thanks again for your wonderful web site and help! <Thank you for writing... In all likelihood the interaction of the species of Skunk Clown will actually improve the health, your chances of keeping the Flowerpot Coral... the Clowns will keep it clean... help feed it. Clown fish disturbing jewel stone
nicholas_yeo replied to kokhui's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
hi kokhui I got the same problem. My jewel has not open fully now coz the clown fish will keep playing with it. But so far, the jewel seems to be doing okay. When I turn of the daylight, the clown fish will tend to leave it alone and keep swimming. I try target feeding to the jewel once a wk with liquid food with brine shrimp mix to ensure it is well fed. -
hi Astrobo, I dun think so. I saw the anemone crab at Sealife... looks diff in its pattern. Kokhui has just open another thread with the same problem as mine. I was worry that hosting the clown fish will affect the jewel growth or health rate.... still monitoring it if it shrink but so far so good.

Your skimmer looks under power..... from the pic it looks like a single air input version. U should try to use a 'double air input' version. Tang is a big eater in the tank. Your bioload will keep increasing and your skimmer won't be able to keep up unless u have other of bio filtration running....
-
The sand is getting 'dirty' now after the bioload goes up with all the feeding to keep the fish happy. Currently nitrite is 0.3 mg/l. Working on getting it down, anyone got good ideas let me know.

Got this Emperor shrimp from Paris Ris. Very odd looking with a duck like bill. Very unusual species. Couldn't take a pic of the bugger b4 it ran into hiding... got a pic from the web instead.
-
Here the 'Pon pon' crab as called by Aquamarin. I called it cliffhanger coz it was always doing some stunts and waving his claws to and fro. Very funny fellow...
-
Bought a purple with green tip plate coral from reborn.... Has been for a couple of days now. The current was alittle too strong for the tentacles to fully extend... but I got no place with low current to place this little bugger.... Still, the clown fish ignore it and still spend all their time cuddling the jewel...

Add the following livestocks over the past 2 wks Decided no additional fish till parameter stablize. But I increase the cleaning crews to help on the daily maintenance. Inverts 1) Sally lightfoot crab 2) Fire Shrimp 3) Emperor Shrimp 4) 'Pon Pon' Crab (dunno what is it, can't ID this pc - got it from Aquamarin) Corals 1) Blue Sponge 2) Coco worm (Red) 3) Green Polyp zoo 4) Hairy Mushroom

What say you abt the article in Sunday TimesPg8

guys, I think it is the IOS system that CR aquarium exhibit last yr during aquarama... http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/sub/news/...,304098,00.html My nano tank is running on a similar system. But this type of system cannot have high bioload.... IOS is too small to handle large amt of fishstock. Check out my tank... http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?...opic=28746&st=0 But if u notice their tank, there are no coraline algae...... not a positive sympton in my opinion. Their tank probably cannot support LPS / SPS at this pt. well, I believe we get to see it again in Aquarama this may... can't wait.. -
New addition to my tank, my first YT!!!

Its pecking on the rocks for algae / vege. My rocks are clean of all vege now... When I bought mine, I check with the boss if it is eating and we confirm on spot it ate pellet foods b4 I got it. I dun have problem feeding mine though. It seems to be having a heavy metabolism rate, chomp everything he can find. Mine YT start pecking straight after I put it in.... it doesn't even have a acclimation period... maybe u need to add 'destress' solution like Aquapharm Hydro-safe solution. Helps in the acclimation process, I dose it when I intro new stocks U can try Ocean Nutrition Algae flakes... its my YT fav food now..... dun go too long on the caixin and lettuce combo... pple tell me that has no nutrition values and may lower its natural resistant to disease... -
U probably wanna promote coralline aglae growth in there.... adds color to your rocks. It looks quite bland now.... Keep your calcium at 400mg/l and u see it start to grow. Also, it 'appears' u may not have enough current flow since your PH is isolated at one corner. U can consider using an overhang filter to increase circulation.... this way your aglae growth will be less on the glass and sand bed. But overhang filter will cause more saltspray though.... Enjoy reefing....

thanks all.... Today, my zoos is fully recovered. Now opening but will take some time to grow back what was already chomped up by the darn nudibranch.....
-
thanks guys, I will try. But I never heard that clown fish will take to a plate coral....
-
thanks guys. Now comes the difficult part.... need to control feeding.... I am beginning to notice algae start blooming due to organic load. My yellow tang and percula clowns are particularly hungry.... they ate everything I put in there.... I fed them 4 times yesterday and the YT was chomping everything including brine shrimp..... Now will try to stablise the tank b4 I try to add any live stocks. Maybe only extra cleaning crews like shrimps and light sally foot crabs. Finally, my percula clowns got so fond of the jewel that they are disturbing it so much that the jewel is no longer opening fully. Will this affect the jewel in the long run??? I dun plan to keep any anemone coz I afraid it will get shredder by the seio pump. any idea should I distract the clowns or do something else....
-
ah..... Thanks Gothia.... will check it out.

thanks for the info, deepblue... I open another topic on this... now on operation 'cleansing' to get rids of the darn critters.... hope my zoos survive

guys, need some help. My zoos not opening now after in the tank for 2 wks. It used to open... but I intro a clown fish and it was swimming all over it till its polyp refused to open. Now, even the clown fish is not around. The zoos is not returning back to normal... I place it in 'medium' flow rate area with moderate lighting.... condition temp: 26 - 27 degC Salinity 1.024 kH: 8 Calcium: 400 ppm Phosphate: <0.1ppm (but no algae bloom so far) Rest of iodine / magnesium / strontium are added wkly but no test kits to check. i add zooplanktons and Phytoplankton ..... wkly , the rest of the corals looks okay. Dunno what could be causing the stress....

Found another nudibranch crawling on my tank..... similar to the last one except this one was yellow. The previous one was KIA when he try 'diving' into my sump.... Took a pretty clear snapshot of it as it was crawling on the glass. Can even see its translucent body. Didnt know if it is 'dangerous' yet, no idea as well where did it pops out from. Looks like I have to make sure I dip my corals next time on my purchase
