Basically the function of an FR is to constantly keep the media "tumbling",feeding it with water from the tank. There is a myraid of products out there which you can put into an FR. Most people will choose phos removers to be on the safe side. I put ultraphos in mine and it works for me I'm not so sure about other products as I have yet to try them
