Advise on cycling new tank....
shoelevy replied to marble's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
not important to string it up la as long as it rots a wae to increase amt of bact in yr tank is to add coral chips in the sump like i did...u can see the pic in my tank thread but u must clean every once in a while cos they trap dirt -

the whole pt of cycling is to allow lots of the gd bact in the lr to fully grow so that it can remove nh4 and no2 so yes...since my lr full of bact i DID NOT detect a single trace of nh4 and no2 -
live rocks got pockets that contain bact to reduce no3 but very minimal...u wouldn't need a mountain to handle the bioload of a normal reef tank
-
hposguard for a whilte nvm...make sure u replace it immediately wen it runs out switch to rowa is best i used to get bloom wen my po4 reading was close to 0...infact...less than 0.01ppm so...very difficult to pin pt a cause

wa........i've never seen anione who claims such an ambitious idea and i'm pretty impressed by this idea although sadly, i can't gif any advice because i can't foresee any disadvantages except this....small fishes can get too close to the top rite side of the reef section and get sucked over to the fowlr section i'm not kidding...my clown gobies love to get sucked over to my overflow compartment and end up in my sump this is about the only thing which i think can go wrong but seriously...i tink there'll be more problems usually...problems only become visible wen u set it up and realise sth is wrong so do think about this very carefully -
i dun use carbon but i use poly filter will poly filter suffice?
-
do it in the tank or take it out and do it? then the cut off piece throw awae?
-
u got dose iodine? i read somewhere high iodine can cause bailing out of polyps if not pegasus is probably rite
-
hi guys i've got a rock of green lumi mushrooms which is gonna explode soon cos they're growing like mad...i'm afriad thy will spill onto other rocks which is sth i wanna prevent i'd like to remove some of the mushrooms to clear space for the others to grow again....how do i go about doing this? thanks u guys can see the rock on the left side of the last photo in http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?...ic=24343&st=255

btw...one shot cheong 4-5 corals is really risky ah...u should buy one...make sure u r successful with it then add another then add another...u wouldn't like a scenario where u or ur tank isn't suited for it then all die together rite? aniwae...if u need more info about yr corals u can visit www.liveaquaria.com www.livemarine.com from yr thread i can roughly tell u didn't really read up on leather den cheong rite? hahaha
-
regarding yr sg...as long as it lies in the recommended region of the hygro it doesn't really matter that yr water is at 27 while the meter is calibrated at 25
-
leather is a soft coral so y the heck do u haf it so close to yr mh? soft corals do not like strong lights...and yr lighting is 10hrs rite?....soft coral u can cut down to 8 or 7hrs a dae the one turning brown is due to zooxanthellae bloom remember zooxanthellae is also an algae...algae will bloom wen u haf high po4, high lights and high no3 (all of which u haf in yr tank)...zoozanthellae is brown so wen it blooms, the brown colour overwhelms the colour of the coral and so yr coral looks brown remember henry sae yr coral turn brown could be due to high nutrients?...its no3 and po4 and yr lovely lights he's refering to leather dun open also got another reason...my experience with mine is if coral food u never dose for quite sometime they will also not open up and for leather...MODERATE curent is enough...dun use current that will cause them to sway regarding trace elements, if u wanna add...go buy aquapharm's marine health trace element....excellent stuff not jus used by me but reccommended by my frends too...not only do yr corals haf gd health yr coralline will grow like mad too

yr lr from previous owner means its definitely cured provided u didn't take long to bring it home...but it dun mean u no need to cycle my rocks were like yrs...gotten from other reefers but i never take risk so i still went ahead and added a market prawn....after 4weeks of testing i never detected a trace of nh4 and that's wen i confirmed my tank is cycled i suggest u do the same too...put in a market or half a market prawn then test for ammonia every 2daes as it rots...if u can't detect a trace even after its completely dissolved den yr tank is ready...and dun forget yr 40% water change b4 adding fish they're turning purple is a gd thing cos it means yr Ca, kh and current flow r appropriate u can see my cycling story at http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?...ic=24343&st=105
