just curious, how big is your beckett? as for offing and oning again, i never got the details of kicking in right but from what i gather from a guy who described the process to me before, basically when the skimmer is new, there's oil on it and the oil hinders skimming. kicking in process refers to the skimmer taking its time to rid the oil after the oil is gone, there's no more kicking in to talk about in other words, after waiting for the skimmer to foam now, you don't have to wait as long the next time you off it

lawson, most people would advice you against tap water treatment of liverocks...i wouldn't disagree with them...but its not what i practise i practise freshwater treatment on my liverocks (i don't think my LR are cured, $8/kg only) these are the steps i take: 1) use a strong jet of tap water and blast the liverock holes....then you'll see crabs and some dead sponges falling off 2) leave rocks to stand for 5mins...in the absence of saltwater, some nasty things will fall off... 3) soak rocks for 5mins just to be sure for my liverocks, using these methods has sure allowed me to get rid of at least a handful of crabs about the rocks becoming dead...well, i personally don't like the idea of skipping freshwater treatment, then in the future having to worry about and trying to catch crabs, unwanted snails etc etc as for good bacteria, i try to minimise loss by keeping the treatment short...the steps above take at most 15mins also, during the cycling period, the bacteria will come back so isn't much of a concern as for smell, well...cycling will also have smell...trust me so that's my practise...not in anyway to flame others, but just another side of freshwater treatment for you to think about

LIP, for this hobby, patience is key, passion is enforced, headache is common, heartache more common, wallet never been more empty but like muarchee said 1) DON't Expect to get GOOD stuff IF YOU AIN"T WILLING TO PAY and, IMO, don't expect to go far if you don't have good equipment 2)Patience is very important...many newbies have a chionging spirit...everything wanna try...unfortunately, no single tank can provide for the needs of ALL marine creatures, some are reef-safe some are not, some are aggressive some are timid, not everything can be put together...compatibility is an issue simply put, ITS VERY IMPORTANT TO READ UP before making a decision on anything. Can't find what you want on internet or books, then ASK. And , don't ask then don't listen (sth which i must admit i've been guilty of and regret many times) 3) Make friends with senior reefers...MY GOODNESS...their knowledge is simply fantastic. Just hang out with them, talk, drink coffee...and slowly you will pick up tonnes of stuff from them. Trouble is, will you have this opportunity? 4) Lastly is Responsibility. You buy something, jolly well take good care of it. Even if it dies(touch wood) , your conscience is clear. DOn't be like so many freshwater fish keepers, buy a fish, throw in tank, don't care if it lives or dies, even if the fish swims upside down, don't bother to treat its problems To sum up, Remember Patience and Responsibility...2 virtues which i think are very important

i on my UV 2hrs before lights on and shortly after lights off...a total of 10hrs i use UV mainly in battle against floating stage of ich...which is more active in searching for a host with light...so at night, i find no pt on-ing my UV. also, at night i dose live plankton, which i do not want to kill with UV on, so UV has to be off at night. also, i try my best to maintain water quality and keep a healthy diet for my fish, varying what they eat occassionally with garlic supplements..in other words, the fishes are healthy enough themselves and UV is only a 2ndary measure against ich as for turning on and off UV is very troublesome, just use a timer that's how i use my UV
