R u going to use a chiller? If yes i think u should t-off from the chiller pump to ur ref. So that the the water from the maintank can be skim by the skimmer before reurning to the main tank rather than spiltting it for the ref. Just my 2 cent. That what i did for my ref. Here is the pic the upper pipe is to the chiller n the lower one is for the ref.

Imho, u need to get more LR for ur tank. it better for u to have more LR now than the coral n ls. Stronger return is better. More water circulation is better for ur tank. That y ppl r geting extra power head for their tank.
