Chaeto Reactors compared to Algae Scrubbers
Full Hedge replied to SantaMonica's topic in General Reefkeeping_
First, Why n=100? Please explain. Second, could you kindly provide me with references(‘simple’ studies) that substantiate your claim that ats is superior to growing cheato for nutrient reduction? I do browse reefing forums quite abit...would love to see one with at least a control. Lastly, you dont always get to choose what variables are in play especially in biology. U deal with them. Thats why...u have a control. Is reducing variables always desirable? U can investigate more than one variable and establish controls for that... -
Corals first. Then fish in qt. After the last coral is in. Wait 1.5-2mths and add the quarantined fish. After that no further addition of livestock. Is done so to have strict control of the exposure to disease.

Cheap coral chips vs ceramic balls
Full Hedge replied to aquagem's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Nice, alot can be demonstrated with very simple set ups. Just some notes. Coral chips leading to an increase in nitrate levels is unfounded. A control is always important. Also need to control/adjust for things like mass of the biomedia, mass of fish etc. -
From my personal experience i would agree with komerider. The practical step would be to consider the micro environment. some stuff to consider If the other corals are not affected it is likely not a systemic issue ( water parameter) It could possibly be due to bacterial infection. May not result in a brown slime like brown jelly disease. Like white band disease in acropora. Its hard to confirm a bacterial infection without obvious symptoms.

There are two kinds of bacteria you want to take note of. Chemo-autotrophs and heterotrophic. Chemo autotrophs (nitrifying bacteria) are of nitrosomonas and nitrobacter genus, responsible for oxidising ammonia into nitrite and then to nitrate. Commonly marketed as instant cycle products. Using such products at this time makes sense because you are cycling your tank. Prodibio startup fits the description. Heterotrophic bacteria on the other hand is the bacteria we use for nitrate and phosphate export. I have shown in an experiment that it only works when a carbon source is provided. In my experiment I used biopellets ( polyhydroxybutyrate), but any carbon source would do. The bacteria product used was zeobak. Adding heterotrophic bacteria without a carbon source does not reduce nutrients levels. Also once system is STABLE, I actually see little reason to dose heterotrophic bacteria. The correct term for carbon dosing is actually stoichiometric manipulation of nutrient levels. They key is to raise carbon level rather than focus on the bacteria. I hope this clears up your confusion. Must be discerning and prudent about what we add
