Clownfish compatibility
soggycookies replied to reefernation's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
don’t really have an answer for that cause fish are still sentient and have their own personalities and tendencies that can’t be predicted. i’ve seen tangs nipping coral polyps despite the common consensus being that they’re ‘reef-safe’. so anything’s possible. just gotta err on the side of caution i guess. The bigger, the better- generally speaking. All the best with your clown harem tank! Sent from Singapore Reef Club mobile app -
my old one was 5x2x2ft, about 120 gallons. current one is 6x3x2.5ft, about 300gallons. my tank is on ground level so i can’t say for the weight criteria of your apartment. best ask your local engineer about it to be safe. have a reeftank with mostly soft coral with a large angel as the centrepiece fish, several tangs, a large thalassoma wrasse, couple of clowns and 2 squirrel/soldierfish and a type of demoiselle. personally i’ve kept them twice before and they are one of the hardier peaceful fish in a typical reeftank(more so than tangs definitely). easy to feed them too. i would avoid rhinecanthus triggers though, especially in tanks with more delicate fish like butterflies that are prone to getting bullied by boisterous fish like the majority of triggers are. even smaller picassos/humu-humu can get very nippy and territorial despite their size Sent from Singapore Reef Club mobile app

Clownfish compatibility

i think a minimum would be a 3x2ft sort of tank, but to me 100gal is a good size if planning to have a couple dozen of them. what’s more important is that they have enough anemones/hiding spaces to take shelter with/from each other, and having several of them rather than just a handful definitely diffuses the aggression toward one another. in general you might wanna avoid maroon and tomato clowns as they’re known to be the more aggressive types of clownfish. ocellaris and percula/their related designer variants are a good choice imo. clarkiis and saddlebacks are sort of the middling option, but i doubt they’d do well in a harem tank as they also grow fairly large for clownfish. you could try pink or orange skunk clowns too(check out melevsreef on youtube, he has like a dozen skunk clowns in a large sebae anemone); smaller species are generally better for harems methinks Sent from Singapore Reef Club mobile app -
a 6ft tank should be enough for a handful of species. more importantly triggers aren’t reefsafe if you’re planning to get corals(they will go for fleshy polyps when curious/hungry and tend to grind their teeth on stony corals). The most reefsafe ones you can go for are Xanthichthys species like Bluethroat triggers or the more elusive Crosshatch trigger, but even those might munch on shrimp and crabs if you have them in a reeftank. butterflies and genicanthus are more peaceful fish compared to the others on your list, so adding them first would be a good idea. as for water quality, generally all of them need stable parameters to thrive. that said, tangs are more prone to diseases due to their thin slime coat. bristletooth tangs are supposedly the most peaceful tang but ime they are aggressive towards blennies and gobies that resemble blennies, probably due to competition over their food source(algae). they do eat detritus but they clean up film algae and diatoms better than acanthurus and zebrasoma tangs, which eat more filamentous algae. pretty sure yellow tangs are still available. see them quite often, just that their prices have spiked, almost doubled. as for hardiness, the butterflies are the most delicate, so you’ll probably want to add them first if possible, followed by the genicanthus angels, then tangs and finally the coral beauty. one main challenge you will probably run into is getting your tangs to coexist peacefully with one another. depending on your tank size, this varies in difficulty. also, adding them together may make it easier at first, especially if they were all bought at the same time. that said, there’s still a chance they will fight for territory eventually. Dry rock if you can tolerate the ugly phase when diatoms and other unsightly algae tend to grow first, definitely a better option for lesser likelihood of pests like aiptasia or bubble algae getting into your tank, but with live rock(especially ones well-established enough) sometimes you don’t even see the initial diatom bloom Sent from Singapore Reef Club mobile app

acans aren’t exactly easy lps either. go for euphyllia like branching frogspawns but stay away from torches at the beginning. Sent from Singapore Reef Club mobile app

imo a foxface grows too large for a 45G. if you’re planning on getting an angel, go for dwarf/pygmy species, and add them last. angelfish tend to be the most territorial eventually. Sent from Singapore Reef Club mobile app
