Absolutely fantastic play by ManUtd last nite against limp & listless Liverpool. Report: United 2 Liverpool 0 Paul Scholes, on his 500th appearance for United, led the way in a commanding 2-0 victory over local rivals Liverpool to take the Reds back to the top of the Premiership. The 31-year-old midfielder, who made his debut 12 years ago, struck the first goal before a fine strike from Rio Ferdinand put the game out of reach against a Liverpool side that were outplayed and outclassed at Old Trafford. Rarely did Rafael Benitez’s side - still without a win on the road this term and now eleven points behind United - threaten the Reds' dominance, a display of defensive solidarity and midfield possession. Sir Alex elected to play a midfield four of Darren Fletcher, Scholes, Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs, with Cristiano Ronaldo only making the bench. In a game the United boss expected to be tight and tense, presumably the 21-year-old winger was to be saved for when Liverpool legs grew weary. In the end he wasn't required. The excellent Fletcher almost engineered United’s first opening inside ten minutes through sheer grit and determination. At first he won the ball following a challenge on Liverpool left-back John Arne Riise, and then when the ball ran free he won a fifty-fifty tackle with Jose Reina who had raced out of his goal. But the Scot's cross was scrambled away. It had set a precedent - these were three points United would not surrender. In local Derbies, sometimes a fierce tackle can rally the supporters as much as a piece of great skill or trickery. And Wayne Rooney's challenge on Riise moments later got the United fans off their seats as if he had just beaten three men. Louis Saha caused Liverpool no end of problems, challenging for everything in the air and running with ball at pace. On the 20-minute mark the Frenchman caused a scramble in the Liverpool penalty area. From Carrick’s corner, Vidic flicked the ball on and Saha volleyed back across goal from the far post, which Reina had to punch out before Garcia desperately cleared the danger. Four minutes later Saha tested Reina’s reflexes again with a stinging shot from the right of the penalty area. Had he placed his shot either side of the Spaniard, he would have been celebrating his seventh goal of the season. United had the majority of chances but, worryingly, Liverpool occasionally still threatened to break forward from their physically more powerful midfield. Dirk Kuyt had the visitors’ first real chance with 12 minutes of the half remaining when Mark Gonzalez beat Ferdinand for pace and crossed for the Dutchman. Fortunately his header was straight at Edwin van der Sar. But, the goal United’s attacking play warranted finally came six minutes before the break, and it fittingly fell to Scholes. He started the move with a nodded ball forward to Rooney, who fed Giggs on the left. In the meantime, Scholes had continued his trademark perfectly-timed run into the box. Giggs picked out the diminutive midfielder’s darted run, and although Reina saved his first side-footed effort, Scholes beat Sami Hyypia to the rebound to bundle it over the line. The Reds pushed on. Saha went close again moments later, Reina’s fingertip save pushing the French forward’s low, long-range shot past the post. United’s half-time lead was deserved, but it was almost taken away just before the break when Xabi Alonso’s curling effort from the edge of the box went inches past the upright. The first 20 minutes of the second half offered few goalscoring opportunities, but despite the wait, United fans were treated to phenomenal piece of skill and emphatic finishing… from Rio Ferdinand. The Reds’ centre-half ventured forward for a corner and remained in the box when the ball came back out to Giggs. The Welsh winger's right-footed cross was spooned up in the air by Jamie Carragher and fell to Ferdinand. Shaping to shoot, he brought the ball down with his right foot and turned into space in one motion, before smashing his shot into the far top corner with his left. Delighted United fans gloated, “…as the Reds go marching on, on, on!” Rafael Benitez, still looking for his first league win over Sir Alex, brought on Peter Crouch and moved the relatively anonymous Steven Gerrard into the centre. But it made little difference. United were in control with the midfield four dominating possession. Liverpool could have few complaints with the result. They were limited to half chances all afternoon, while United were positive throughout and got the just rewards. Team Line-ups United: Van der Sar, Neville © (O’Shea, 78), Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Fletcher, Scholes, Carrick, Giggs, Rooney, Saha. Subs not used: Kuszczak, Brown, Ronaldo, Solskjaer. Alas, a comprehensive guide on anything & everything about tridacnid clams for die-hards. QUOTE: There are lots of books available that cover marine aquariums, fishes, and corals, but there hasn’t been one dedicated solely to the tridacnid clams since Daniel Knop’s Giant Clams came out in 1996 – until now. I have recently finished my book Giant Clams in the Sea and the Aquarium, which will be available in October, 2006. The book is an 8” x 9” 227-page hardback, printed on high-quality gloss paper, which includes over 300 photographs, and covers all aspects of tridacnid biology and aquarium care. The book's foreword was written by J. Charles Delbeek, co-author of The Reef Aquarium: Volumes 1-3, and here’s what he had to say about it: “…James Fatherree has brought together the most up-to-date literature and anecdotal information on the biology and care of tridacnid clams for the hobbyist available, along with his stunning photos. Using his distinctive, conversational and light-hearted writing style, James has written a book for every hobbyist, be they absolute beginners or seasoned veterans.” For those that aren't familiar with my other works, I’ve been a monthly writer and photographer for Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine for over 7 years now, and have written numerous articles for Aquarium Fish, Freshwater and Marine Aquarium, Reefkeeping, Conscientious Aquarist, and Practical Fishkeeping magazines, too. I am the author of Hard Corals, Soft Corals, Getting Into Mini-Reef Aquariums, and The Super Simple Guide to Corals, as well, all of which were published by TFH. But, I've finally given my full attention to the wonderful clan of giant clams in this one, which has been without a doubt my greatest undertaking and is certainly my best book to date. James W. OUCH !!!... Looser Temasek set to lose S$850 Million Published Wednesday, October 18, 2006 by Singapore Election. Siriporn Chanjindamanee Petchanet Pratruangkrai The Nation Loss of Bt20 bn predicted, if buyer can be found Singapore state investment firm Temasek Holdings stands to lose more than Bt20 billion if it were to sell off its controversial majority holding in Shin Corp, financial experts believe. Brokerage analysts said Temasek, which controls about 96 per cent of Shin Corp, might have to sell up to 47 per cent of the company, or 1.5 billion shares, to resolve the foreign ownership dispute. Thai law restricts foreign interests in Thai firms to below 50 per cent, so Temasek must reduce its holding by 47 per cent to meet the 49 per cent limit. The 47 per cent stake in Shin Corp is now worth a market price of Bt52.32 billion, compared with Bt74.14 billion in January this year - a loss for Temasek of more than Bt20 billion. On Monday, Temasek issued a statement to clarify its willingness to reduce its holding in Shin Corp at an appropriate time to ensure an orderly market. However, it has not yet addressed the question of whether it breached Thai law by allegedly relying on nominees to take over Shin Corp. A fund manager said Temasek might want to complete the share sale in November, before a court verdict on whether to revoke the licences of Shin Corp subsidiaries due to Temasek's alleged violation of foreign ownership law. But other analysts believe Temasek might find it very difficult to find potential buyers. "Temasek is looking for potential buyers but it may not be able to conclude the deal by November because it involves lots of money," said an analyst. He said only a handful of Thai companies such as Siam Cement, Charoen Pokphand (CP) and Thai Beverage Plc have enough cash to acquire the Shin Corp stake. However, Thai Beverage is unlikely to buy Shin Corp shares because its chairman Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi is reluctant to get involved in political issues. CP is also unlikely to spend a huge amount of money on such a move, said the source. Now, the focus is on Siam Cement and Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), both partially owned by the Crown Property Bureau. But the source quoted a senior official at Government House as saying Siam Cement or Siam Commercial Bank's buying into Shin Corp "could never happen". SCB has an indirect interest in Shin Corp, but Khunying Jada Wattanasiritham, the bank's president and CEO, said "there's no reason for SCB to buy more Shin Corp shares". Korn Chatikavanij, deputy secretary-general of the Democrat Party, also discounted the possibility of Temasek finding any Thai buyer for its Shin Corp stake in the near future. "Who would want to step in now? There are several contentious legal problems surrounding Shin Corp. Not to mention the case against Shin Corp at the Administrative Court," he said. Temasek bought 49 per cent of Shin Corp from the Shinawatra and Damapong families in January this year. In a subsequent public tender for the remaining shares Temasek, through Cedar Holdings and Aspen Holdings, snapped up almost everything and ended up controlling 96 per cent of the Thai company, leaving just 4 per cent as a free float. Temasek's senior managing director Jimmy Phoon said in a statement on Monday the share reduction plan was part of his company's original intention, to maintain Shin Corp's listing status on the Thai stock market following Temasek's public tender offer in March. But he did not say how many shares it planned to sell to keep the stocks liquid in the market. Seamico Securities Plc said the sale was inevitable. It predicted Temasek might have to sell 51 per cent to reduce the risk from the nominee controversy. An analyst from Asia Credit Securities said Phoon's announcement was good news. "It should promote the free float of Shin Corp shares on the market and reduce foreign investors' worries on the future operation of Shin Corp," he said. Local telecom operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) has 48.3 per cent of its shares held by foreigners. If foreign shareholders in Shin Corp are included, the foreign stake in AIS would be 91.1 per cent, much higher than the legal limit of 49 per cent. "If Temasek wants to reduce Shin's foreign shareholders to 49 per cent, it has to sell around 1.547 billion shares," the analyst said. "Now we have to see if Temasek sells the shares to institutional investors or to retail investors. And what will the conditions be for the sale," he queried. Meanwhile Karun Kittisataporn, permanent secretary of the Commerce Ministry, said in spite of Temasek's intention to sell its stake, the ministry will continue with its legal action to follow up the Business Development Department's investigation on whether Kularb Kaew is a nominee of Temasek. "It was a separate issue. The ministry will proceed with the case," he said. Last month, the ministry concluded its investigation, finding that Kularb Kaew was a nominee of Temasek Holdings. The case was handed over to Tung-Mahamek police station. In the primary investigation, the department found it likely Kularb Kaew was in breach of the kingdom's Foreign Business Act. -
