The beautiful and hardy tangs for the reef tank
nakazoru replied to Melvyn Tan's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Tangs are ferrari of our reef tank, 2 ft better dun keep tangs. Also not recommended if it is a new tank. I will never buy a tang without my QT for 1 month. -
Hmmm; Difficult to keep. Require High flow. Lights 6500K better. Mine long thime ago, gaze by luttuce slug til botak. Killed the Slug, then they regrow, add my tang then all dissappear for ever. Price also not cheap... If dying, will drop off like hair and float in tank amd difficult to scoop out. Difficult algae, as other aggressive algae will surpass them if flow is not enuf. Uses flow to keep other algae away.

Hi all; One point of interest that I ponder is the worthiness of nitrate removal. Isn't Nitrate something that establish tank worries least of? Isn't bacterial suppose to handle that? How abt the biological food chain? Mussel feed phyto/nutrients -> Mussel shits -> back to tank -> some one else eats it... There is no export of waste again... In fact more waste. Mussel/Lailai need high nutrients to do well... How abt massive spawning??? It happens when lailai/mussell are stress, they spawn massive like clam, cloud water, another possiblilty of crash? I did experience a clam spawn when I introduce 5 clams into my tank at one shot. It is not fun.

Japaneses Closed Loop Outlets - Where to get?
nakazoru replied to s1214215's topic in Product Reviews
Wow, The periscope really makes the tank look like a underwater NASA project. A underwater naval base. Yes DIY shoud not be an issue, but the outlet must point upward. Otherwise operation sand storm. -
Nano Tank like 1ft is tough but not impossible. I kept my 1 ft nano long ago with only 1 canister filter. I used bio-home to house bacteria. Water change is a must bi-weekly. Rinse out of the canister with tank water at least once a month. Do not use tap water, it will crash your tank. No coral if no chiller/Aircon as there is impossible to maintain light and temp. Using Fan will suck up all the water like mad. Get a pair of more hardy clown, and they are a beauty to watch.

Sorry that I missed this qn.. No experience like yours, but the symtoms are similar. My experence like this: 1. Dose Red Slime Removal as recommended. Maybe a bit less to play safe. Off Skimmer. 2. Fishes experience short breathed, coral retracted becos of Ph changes. Say my prayers. 3. I always observe the copepodes in the sump tank for the stability of the tank. If they are there and moving, everything should be OK. 4. Waited 2 days, cynaobacteria retreated, with faint trace left. 5. Fishes seems all right, so I brave the it to dose another round for 2 days. 6. Bang!!! All gone. 7. Start Skimmer for 2 days 8. 30% Water change 9. Add Carbon. Bye bye Cyano. Bear in mind that Cyanobacteria still in sand and LR, remaining dormant.. Nutrients bloom, they come back with vengence but only some >1yr. Maybe from new addition also.
-
Actually Cyano is more related to nutrients in the water than PO4. Even one uses Rowa, removing PO4 to none detectable. You will still get Cyano. Chances is that PO4 is high because of excessive feeding, under-skimming, which also meant nutrient is high. Cyano bloom with light with presence of nutrients. Once it bloom it is difficult to eradicate, unless you uses antibiotics. They will be gone in 2 days. If you have the patient, go the hard way as below: 1. Underfeed, meaning feed moderate, dun feed beyond what your fish can take. 2. shorten the light cycle. Some off for 3 days. 3. Improve the fitration, or better skimmer.

I did this to recover bleach prata: 1. Place prata in sump as it has less lights, lower flow, less stock and no stinting coral. 2. Leave it undisturb, just target feed very small prawn. 3. For 1 weeks it will retreat show skeleton, afterwhich it will open big. 4. 1-2 months to restore to full glory. Bear in mind that different color prata has different light requirement. Brighter the color, more lights required. If you see tint of green in prata means it need a higher variation of lights. If your prata does not do good in main tank, chances it will never be. Even Henry from ML bleach his red prata, I guess you are doing well... So just be patient with it recovery and dun disturb it too often once you change it location.

Wah Pianz; The last time I sell stuff so loooong ago, cannot even remember what I sell liao, collected so much junk in this hobby. Cannot believe the stuff I have for a 40G Tank. I guess MIA meant did not log on here for a while, I'm sure many reefer is around but just did not come in to contribute. Sometime it does get boring in here...
-
When did I go missing?? It just that my current tank too small to further add stuff to it or recreate. Finally got chance to get a bigger tank since I moving house.

I think need permit lah, I saw a website that say >600kg need to send in drawing for approval... Also need to be near pillar ...
-
Hi all especially those with large tank.... I guess many of you. I'm planning a 5 x 2.5 x 2.5 ft with a 3ft sump tank in a 5 room HDB flat living area. With rocks and stuff will exceed 600kg.... Did you guys get a permit from HDB? I'm putting it in the middle of the living area, meaning it will not be near any pillar or column... Any advise? Thanks in advance.

It can be done, but very uneven.... Ulgy

Bro reeftask; My oldest coral which is a Gonio is still alive for 3 years now. Water change of course, once every month. FeS04, I dun use it very regularly, my process is quite tedious, I got lazy. All the more at the moment, I more busy to raise fries of my true percs. Too many failure... Coral growth also depended of others parameters.... not only PO4. Best growth, zoa, frogspawn, gonio, coupled by good CA, KH....

A 1HP chiller will save your bill. Any equipment that is overload will not save you money. You need to size the chiller for your tank.

Hmmmm... lanthanum chloride is another anti-coagulant that removes certain chemical compound including PO4 out of the water. It is again another waste water treatment product. Beware of course, lanthanum chloride is toxic to animals/human. I dun know abt fishes. But I guess it is the same. Forget the fish, even handling it in its chemical states, requires care. Inhaling dust vapor, causes asthmatic symtoms. The list continue for it safety handling. The author mention that it is dose into the sump before the the skimmer, expecting that skimmer removes the coagulant before it goes back to the main tank. A good idea so chemical leach back into the main tank is minimal. But he does not dose on a daily basic but only when PO4 is high enuf affects the coral. Please see me article for cheap alternative treatment. I like the idea of drip treatment in sump and remove by skimmer. But my sump too small.

There is medical and industrial grade autoclaves... You may also look for food packaging etc if you want industrail/food grade machine...

Hi Bro; How old was it and how about the warranty?
-
Bro; What is ur model of the skimmer? See if it match my impeller...
-
Hi My friend; Now my first batch left only 2 fries... I even suspect 2morrow, will left one. So far, I feed rotifer once a day, in the morning. So far I did not change change any water.
-
Thanks ambystoma82; Your DC must be quite good to take shoots like that. By the way do you change water in the larvae stage? Now day 4, left 10 lavare....
-
Sorry folks collected.
-
Sorry Toa Payoh is the collecting place, sorry that I did not PM all. Reserve for now.

As above. Giving free as it is Nocturnal, and guess it will be bad for my crown fish baby hatching.
-
Thanks for all the corcern. Disaster happens when the baby hatch... The were born I think 1 am. After some 3 nights of empty waiting till 3am, I dose off while waiting for that 1hr after lights off, with all equip setup. Woke up at 5am, swear at myself, gather torch and find no fries anywhere and eggs gone... Feeling sad, I waited for a while more, then I saw some fries gather near the lights. After some 1 hr of gathering, I get only less than 20... Til now, I have only 9 left. Only can hope the rotifer prep are good enuf. Thanks to Bro Bawater, super nice reefer, highly recommended. Still have some 10 eggs gona born tonight, hope I dun fall asleep again. Also the new born has brought some good luck to my family. The proud owner's (me lah) ic number struck first first!!!! On the same day they were born. Too bad I a non-believer of 4-D. Lucky my parents made a small fortune. I think can afford some good grade prawn for them
