why makes a person quit this hobby?
skinbone replied to LittleBurger's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Now we are talking...See how they leave space everywhere? They have a theme. Not just a huge bunch of rocks dumped into a tank and then a ridiculously huge collection of rare frags stuck so close you don't even know where the focus point is. Then again, it is personal. Hahah....cover my ###### first. -
I like reading about your adventure with the worm:). Very well described. I almost feel my heartbeat thumping.

why makes a person quit this hobby?
skinbone replied to LittleBurger's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Actually i believe that once a reefer forever a reefer. Even when they decomm, they will someday find their way back. One of the reasons why people may quit this hobby is due to the lack of like minded people to discuss and involve in this hobby. This hobby requires a closely nit fraternity. You need friends who love the hobby and who get equally excited at your achievements as well as their own. What i see lacking in this hobby is communication among reefers. Pasar Malam activities not counted! Hahah. Seriously, when u start a tank thread and people don't get really excited, then it takes a marine biologist to keep up with the learning and commitment required in reef maintenance, which many of us are not. You need people who are experienced and patient to guide the new guys and the new guys must also gather a few newbies to start the hobby so as to learn and speak at the same frequency. Cause in all honesty, the 'old birds' have little patience to answer newbie questions 20times a month. Agree? And please for goodness sakes, stop having fruit racks for a reef. Be innovative and artistic in your rockscape. Learn from the japanese. Even the europeans are starting to abandon the fruit rack stacking methods. Challenge yourself to set up specimen dedicated reefs. Actually IMO, a few(maximum 10 different types or genus) large mature and colorful colonies is way nicer than being a coral collector and ending up with a rojak tank. Pay attention to symmetry and form and color distribution. It will create a deeper impact than having 200 specimens cramped into a 3footer reef. When you realize that your reefing hobby is not about collecting all the specimens in the world, the hobby gets less straining on the pockets and also more meaningful. just my 2 cents worth...make it $1. Happy reefing. -
This is true if only u buy a week after they have acclimatized the fish. IMO, it is only justifiable to pay more if the fish has been properly quarantined for a week or so. If the fish just touched down a day before and you chiong to buy, why the need to pay more? Let the LFS owners take the risk of DOA and quarantine and feed the fish until it is stable, then it makes sense to pay extra. BTW,i like coral farm cause they use UV on their water and the fish are usually very healthy and feeding well. But you may have to do your research well before buying. Some of their fish pricing is ridiculously high. But some exceptionally cheap. I remember their nano fish like trimma, Upside-Down Trimma, eviota, spaceman etc(all from indonesia) are super cheap. Each piece is only $3 compared when others are selling at 8-15. Then their bangaii cardinal is super expensive at $14 although elsewhere selling only $6. So you have to research well before buying if you want to get good deals. If you dont need good deals then just buy wherever is convenient la. I personally always check with LCK(steven) for his fish shipment before i try elsewhere. His pricing is very reasonable and non chopping board style. Especially true for exotic or pricey fish, you cannot go wrong with this place. Just my opinion lah....

Go to LCK(steven). He is officially my king of Super suns in Singapore. His suns are big and healthy and cheap. Best in Singapore!

Hi, to all interested parties, all the suncorals have been collected by a nice reefer. Thank you. thread closed.

Hi Jason, reserved for you. Meanwhile i wil continue with tender loving care till your new tank is ready to receive them. My apologies to the other reefers that have confirmed a couple of pieces each. I have to cancel the sale as it is more convenient to deal with just one guy. Thank you for your understanding. warmest regards. Kevin

Thank you bro. Appreciate the help.

Hi guys, due to lack of time to target feed my sun corals. i am selling away many colors of sun corals at very low pricing. They are all healthy and have been under tremendous tender loving care. Target feed everyday for the past 4 months. Please refer to this thread, refer to thread #25 for latest FTS to see what is available. I am selling everything except for the rhizo and super sun. Please dont pm or make any enquiries with regards to them. I prefer if interested parties just come over and pick and choose what you like. Every piece for $8 dollars. Big or small all same price. Refer to pricing list: -each piece is $8 -10 pieces for $60 collection at bukit panjang. CALL me on my mobile at 81000833 to make appointment. regards, Kevin

My tank supported by the ATS and a NAC3.5 BM skimmer. Feeding 8 cubes of Mysis everyday. Cyclopeeze on alternate days. Rotifier and oyster eggs every alternate days. Water change 2 big pails every week.
-
I will suggest you do a taller/longer screen than a wider one. This is because a wide ATS requires a much bigger pump to create the necessary flow for an ATS to function properly. Do read up more and you will know what i am talking about.
-
I just use a pump to pump water into the compartment where it will overflow like a waterfall. The screen is clip on to the side and is easy to remove for cleaning. Works very well and not necessary for bulky fixtures.
