Got you! SO i got ti right bare tank is easier to maintain cause the sand wont be flying around the tank.. If you turn the wave maker at high speed. Plus nutrients and decompose organism won't get stuck in the sand, if fishes stir the sand up it will cost a algae bloom right? I hope after so much reading i got it correct. Like say if i want wanted to have sand will a one inch depth be sufficient ? How did you install the overflow box? From the pic i can't really tell, how big is your pipeing size for both return and in are huge at least 4inch?
