Try to plan the additions of your tangs properly. Eg. The tamest ones should go in first and the fiercer ones should go in last. If possible.. the smaller ones should go in first as well. At least it works for me. Started with a mini ABT, then follow by a slightly larger kole tang a couple of months later and then recently added a salfin tang. Slight aggression shown towards the new member for 5-10 mins and everything is fine after that... no fights at all.

main purpose of the fan is to increase evaporation rate... thereby lowering the temperature of remaining water in the tank. If you remember your secondary science, those molecules that 'escape' from the water surface are of higher energy... hence the remaining water will be cooler..

UV don't kill beneficial bacteria...

5 months diatoms understandable due to the silicates... but green hair algae? possible to have even with low nitrates and phosphates as my tank is new?

actually i got some problems on algae as well.. currently having some green hair algae and also diatoms on the glass wall... PO4 at 0.05ppm and NO3 at about 2ppm.. what could be the other reasons? Amount of hair algae increasing....

When the rowas are placed in a FR, the rowa can be fully utilized as water will 'push thru' all surfaces of the rowa particles. If u placed the rowa in a filter bag.. the water will most probably not reached the middle of the bag.. hence wasting those rowa in the middle.. therefore using FR may be more cost effective in the long run

yeah u r right... for FOWLR.. lights are for viewing purpose only.. some may prefer better/brighter lights like T5s as it can bring out the colour of the fish better... Anyway u got a huge tank! Hope to see a picture of it...

Salifert is the way to go... always reliable.. so happy with it as compared to the mini-labor i used previously.

have been using OR for half a year... no noise at all... and best of all.. its not hot at all... i can touch the pump with my bare hand with not much heat detected

The reason is to prevent detritus from blocking/getting into the porous regions of the biohome which is supposed to house anaerobic bacteria for denitrification purposes(nitrate-nitrite).

TM reef pro got good kh+calcium but rather low magnesium...

Skimmate should be able to start the cycle as well... although if u have LRs in the tank... its rather unnecessary... but i dun find anything wrong with it.. the main purpose of starting the cycle is to build up the beneficial bacteria... so getting the skimmate in will actually build up the beneficial bacteria

Actually its possible for a new tank setup to be unable to detect any NH4 or NO2 at all right from the start. I experienced it myself. But the difference is that I had the LRs cured in a separate tank for a month and the transfer between the 2 tanks is just a matter of seconds, therefore no die-offs observed. After the transfer of all the LRs and aquascaping, I tested the water the following day and both NH4 and NO2 is zero. I waited for another 3 days and again, they are zero again. To be sure, I added a piece of market prawn and let it rot for a week. Every alternate days, I tested for NH4 and NO2 and they were never detected at all. Did a water change and started stocking from then on....

Seriously, I dont know what u r trying to say. When I first asked you whether your is still cycling, u said 'Yes'. Now you say your tank is 1 year plus already.... Anyway, changing 90% of the water is very stressful of the livestocks.... Normally, to have a sudden spike of NH4/NO2 for a matured tank would imply a sudden increase in bio-load(stock too fast) whereby the bacteria cannot handle the increased amount of NH4 produced. Another reason might be a sudden decreased of bacteria population. Do you have any biological filtration and you washed them recently? Maybe u have accidently killed all the bacterias which caused the NO2 spike.

Seriously.. whats the difference? Whats cycling the water?

The cheapest LFS selling YT at RM70. Just imagine them buying LS from our farms, even if they import it themselves, shipment from Hawaii isnt cheap too...

Its normal to have high level of NO3, cos u dun have anaerobic bacteria to break down the NO3 to N2.

is the tank still cycling?

YT selling price in Msia is at least RM70.. cannot be RM20 because no way they can cover the cost of shipment all the way from Hawaii
